5.0 out of 5 stars Soft Music Is Surprisingly Deep
First off, let me say that this isn't anything like you've heard with The Rentals or Weezer. This is a very quiet album with soft melodies and instruments. Some have said that this is bedtime music, and it is in a way. Not without it's gems, there are a lot of good songs on this album. But you will be dissapointed if you are expecting some moog or pop tunes. The...

First I am a huge Weezer fan, and a equal Rentals fan. I thought Sharp brought great things to Weezer and The Rentals was his brainchild...I thought how can I go wrong buying this! Well I was wrong...DEAD WRONG. First off it seems Sharp is trying to get people more depressed that Radiohead...more depressed that even Travis! Every song is a somber miserably ballad or attempt at one that just screams either self pity, self loathing or hey I am trying really hard to be mellon collie but I am overdoing it and its not authentic. I was literally wondering when the song "bang" would end the disc of a gunshot sound. Worse is Sharps singing...he simply has the most whiniest weezy never changing pitch voice. I could see pulling this card for one song, but a whole album of him mumbling is just plain torture! The lyrics he sings are bad, and not bad as in good, bad as in they are so horribly written that you almost feel embarrassed to be caught listening to it. He used the same rhyme structure to such a degree that I was able to finish the verse before he said it-without even knowing what he was going to say. The music has no depth, like literally it sounds like a slow clicking of a accoustic and you barely hear a variable sound. Every song sounds the same, same whining, same music, same horrible voice. One song called Let Me Pass is so bad I hope I can erase it from my memory. I have no idea how he could release this with a conscience and expect is to be worth anyones money. I feel ripped off. I will give it two stars because if you are self loathing and miserable and prefer to bask in your own self pity listen to this and enjoy your sorrow. For anyone looking for something else you are misinformed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Give it time, it will really grow on you, June 15, 2009

Yes, Matt's solo stuff is a lot different than Weezer and The Rentals. For more instant gratification, head for the Puckett's EP, which is probably a more satisfying first listen. Still, there's some amazing tracks on this album -- I'm especially fond of the opening track, as well as "Thoughts from a slow train." My fiancee really enjoyed "Just Like Movie Stars." Calling it "sunday morning music" is probably a bit too cliche; this is good stuff for when you want to relax away from the craziness. It's found its way through my speakers many times after the traffic jam finally clears and the sun is setting. It also provides an interesting transition into what The Rentals are doing currently. Some of the same elements are present in this album's presentation. Yes, the instrumentation is different (no Joey Santiago guest here!), but the same richness of sound is there.

5.0 out of 5 stars acoustic masterpiece!!, June 19, 2004

This review is from: Matt Sharp (Audio CD)
First of all I don't see why people keep saying "If you are a major weezer fan, you should buy this" becuase this is nothing like weezer or the rentals, and I'm sure Matt still doesn't like to be compared to them. You can tell from the song "Goodbye West Coast"

Ok this is the review:

This album makes me want to become a musician. Matts voice gives it a nice folk feeling to it along with the acoustic. This album sohlud be apart of your collection of cds!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars a must for anyone who calls themselves a weezer fan, May 26, 2004
This review is from: Matt Sharp (Audio CD)
This album is amazing. That's all that really has to be said. It's amazing. Matt sharp has and always will be my favorite bassist/member in general of weezer, and i have been buying all of his solo stuff(and other weezer side projetcs) over the past year. I started with Return of the Rentals, then got Seven More Minutes, then I hunted down Puckets when it first came out. Puckets was hard to get, but well worth the wait. It was amazing, i didnt mind spending 13 bucks for four or five songs, because they were that good, and ever since then I have been patiently waiting for a full album like that, and here it is. It is 10 new songs in the puckets style, plus a reworked Goodbye West Coast. I have never heard anything remotely like this before, and i hope i never do, because noone could possible do it better then Matt. If your looking for some weezer side projects, I'd reccomend this and the Return of the Rentals, then work your way on to the rest, but if your just lookin for great music, youve found it right here.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ehhh, October 30, 2005
This review is from: Matt Sharp (Audio CD)
I love Matt, he's a really charismatic musician. His work with Weezer and The Rentals is awesome. This album though? Eh, not so much.

It's safe to say that probably 99% of the people who buy this know Matt from his previous work as opposed to his recent solo venture. One might expect the usual rock songs with catchy choruses and perhaps a bit of Moog, but you won't get it. Instead, Matt gives us long flatline epics that you're more likely to fall asleep to than remember.

That's not to say it's all bad. For what it is, this record is okay. If you're into low-key, atmospheric acoustic music, you might like it. The song "Goodbye West Coast" is a decent tune. This type of music just isn't my thing.

Matt is cool, but unfortunately I have to say that I think he needs a partner of some sort in order to be good. His voice just isn't up to par to truly lead. In Weezer, he falsettoed behind Rivers and in The Rentals he had Cheri's lovely female voice to help improve the vocal picture. As I write this The Rentals are supposedly getting back together so maybe he's come to realize his own shortcomings and strengths. I can't recommend this album though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good album, still wish he never left Weezer, October 11, 2005
This review is from: Matt Sharp (Audio CD)
This is a good album, the reason its good, not great is that I wish the 3 songs from Puckett were on here so you didnt have to shell out all that other dough for 3 songs. But this album is stellar nonetheless. It is ideal for this time of year when the weather is cold and dreary. Theres a touch of Dylan (gasp!I said it) in his voice, and his singing style is very unique; it works well with the music. I am all for this if its the music he wants to make, its unique and you can obviously tell hes making it on his own terms. I give it 4 just cuz I'll pretend this and Puckett are one album.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sleepy, March 3, 2005

I'm a big Matt Sharp fan. As a bassist myself, the way he attracted attention to himself in Weezer and then went on to have success with The Rentals is pretty inspiring. To me, Matt is the falsetto singing goofy guy who always entertains. With this new album though, he is obviously no longer trying to play that angle.

I do like this CD, but not in the way that I like most. To sit down and actively listen to it... it's just impossible. The whole thing just blends together in a blur of ambient sounds and melodies. However, I have found use for it! I work night shift, so sometimes I have to catch sleep even when I'm not all that tired. To help, I just pop this CD in and by "Shadows" or "Watch the Weather Break" I'm gone! To tell you the truth, I haven't really heard the last half of this album, despite repeated playings!

In any case altough a bit dreary, it's a good record. "Goodbye West Coast" is probably the standout track, as for the rest... well I can't remember. Props to Matt for this one, but it would be nice to see something more energetic and upbeat for next time!
