4.0 out of 5 stars More fun categories, May 30, 2005
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Outburst Remix (Toy)
I have played previous versions of this game since I was twelve or so, and now I'm 26. In general, this game has wide appeal for all ages. The categories are updated and more fun than the version that was around in the mid-1990s. However, a new twist different from the previous version is that each card has a "headline" somewhat obscuring the real topic in a pun. The team whose turn it is to guess answers, has to decided whether or not to play or pass the card based only on the headline. This eliminates some of the keep/pass strategy involved in the game unless players can figure out the topic from the pun. One way to get around this is to turn the card upside down and insert it just part way into the viewer to read the topic of the card to the other team so that they can decide to play or pass. Yet, playing with the pun headlines is fun also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very fun game..., January 13, 2005
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars

Outburst is a game that I played as a kid & I never forgot about it. I remembered it being so much fun that I asked for it for Christmas several years in a row & I've finally got it. We really enjoy this game. It's so much fun for all ages. The bonus dice is such a nice addition to this game because it gives you a chance to earn up to 13 points per turn rather then just a maximum of 10. I kind of neat how the #10 is sometimes a tricky answer like one time we had the topic of namimg places on your body where you could wear a ring or earring & #10 was ring around the collar. This makes you think a little bit harder. It's such a great game that I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just As Good as the Original Game!, November 27, 2007
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Outburst Remix (Toy)
I've had Outburst Remix on my WishList for quite some time, and I'm glad I finally purchased it! I've had the original Outburst since the early 90's and was thrilled to find that there's a new edition.

Outburst Remix is the same as the original game EXCEPT instead the card giving you the topic itself at the top (to determine if you want to play or pass), there is a clever phrase called a Headline. This phrase may or may not be what you're thinking--much like the categories on the $10,000 Pyramid.

For example, the category may be Pay TV--and you have to determine whether to play or pass based only on that phrase. The actual topic? Products As Seen on TV. Another example? Paw-Ternity. The actual topic? Names or Nick Names for Cats.

For those entirely unfamiliar with Outburst, here's how it works:

Two teams of any size (even two players) try to call out the most answers printed on a particular card when it is their turn. If you think you want to try it, you play. If not, you pass to the other team who MUST play it on their next turn. HOWEVER, no matter WHICH topic you pick next, you MUST play it...so it's a gamble, too. (You only get three pass tokens per team per game.)

There is a sand timer (about 60 seconds), so you only have so much time to get as many matches as you can. Just because an answer is good or seems "right" doesn't mean you'll match what's on the card!

Cards are placed in a "decoder" of sorts (think Password) where you can only see the answers when you put it inside a little device. To help you keep track of the other team's answers, there are small yellow switches for you to flip when they get an answer right. There are a total of 10 answers on each card, which features a different topic on each side.

Another neat element is that there are two dice to throw: the purple die only goes up to 3 and the white die goes up to 10. IF you happen to correctly match the answer that corresponds to the number on the white die, you get additional points based on the number on the white die. For example, say you roll a 6 on the white die and a 2 on the purple die. If you match #6, you get an EXTRA 2 points on top of the points you earned with your regular matches.

Another great element of Outburst Remix is that you don't have to be at a table to play--so you can be lounging around on the floor or on couches. You just need a surface to roll the die and hold the cards (the game top works fine for this.)

There is a two-sided score card that goes up to 60, so the first team to reach 60 wins. (Small plastic sliders help you keep track of the points).

My family and I played this game during Thanksgiving and my father LOVED IT. Here's the odd thing: he normally HATES games and will not play. (In fact, when we were playing Imaginiff in the other room, he REFUSED to play with us.)

Because we played in the living room, where he was already sitting, he decided to join my Mom and son's team. After the game, he said he really enjoyed it...and wanted to come over again so we can play for (get this) HOURS. (I about swallowed my teeth! What a suprise!) He even commented how he hates games (yes, Dad, we know!), but really had fun with Outburst Remix.

If you're looking for a fun game that can be played in a relaxed atmosphere (well, physically relaxed--this game can get your heart pumpin' if you're competitve!), you'll likely love Outburst Remix! The topics are updated (there's 600 of them) and even children can play (although my 9 year old is usually unfamiliar with most of the topics, he doesn't feel left out and even gets some answers for his team at times!)
