I just picked this up for my 7 year old son for Christmas.
He really wants a video camera he LOVES to make videos! This is like a kids dream come true their very own digital video camera with sound and it also takes digital pictures. I am sure this will be on of his favorite presents! I thought I better open this and try it out then wait for the big day and it didn't work right. Well I was very impressed with the whole thing! The video quality is good great for a kid. The quality of the digital pictures was also good. I expected the video and picture quality to be very poor it's not like your own home video camera but a wonderful camera for a kid. They say ages 8 and up I would say ages 6 and up to 12 a teenagers might not think this is the coolest camera. I looked all over for a review on this camera and there was nothing so I had to take a minute to let people know it's actually a really good deal!

Great camera,

I bought this camera for my son for his 7th birthday. He loves to take photos and videos. The quality of both are similar to that of cameras from the early 90's when digital was just starting to hit the market. My son likes to use the camera w/o the additional handle but I have him keep it on so he doesn't keep playing w/ the SD card. It can use up AA batteries fast if your kids forget to turn it off so I suggest rechargeble ones. I wanted a carrying case for that wasn't expensive so I picked up a simple fanny pack for my son and he can fit the camera and all of the accessories into it. The software is pretty basic but fun to use. I do reccomend getting a large SD card or you will be downloading all of the time, especially if you have a video-happy child like mine. Video takes up a lot of space on an SD card. All in all, if you think your child would enjoy taking pictures or creating their own home movies without destroying your top of the line equipment, this is a great item. By the way, it is very entertaining watching the films of a 7 year old. They have a completely different perspective on the world around them.

Sophisticated enough for our 8 year old, and simple enough for our 4 year old. This toy is perfect for all ages! It has been dropped several times and remains unscathed. We have three Vidsters, and all are still in perfect working order after a full year of use - what a find! We found a larger memor card a necessity, but well worth the investment. Both still photos and videos are excellent quality, and camera has features such as instant playback that make it just like an adult camera. Well worth the investment!

After reading the reviews, I ordered the Vidster for my 7 year old without much research in to the product. What a mistake! The idea is great, but the reality is terrible. The memory on the camera is very, very small. He can tape only about 5 minutes max and less, of course, if he takes pictures. The original software editing disk arrived cracked. Mattel replaced it, but the second disk was inoperable as well. He used his camera off and on the entire first day and kept deleting and retaping. The batteries (4 AAs) lasted less than 24 hours. All and all, I would recommend to anyone that you skip this camera and buy a low end video camera that will coordinate with your own editing software and allow the child more taping time.

We bought this camera for our 9year old twins for a gift last December. They are having a lot of fun with it. We also purchased a 512MB sd card and rechargable batteries so that they could take more video. They took the camera on a recent canoe camping trip and had a great time taking video of each other climbing on rocks, playing on the beach, and even of a HUGE snapping turtle near the shore of our island. The video quality is quite good outdoors in good light. Indoors it is not as clear, you definitely need good lighting. We did get a bit dizzy watching their videos bounce around and turn sideways ;-)

A Kid's Review

Well I got this camera for christmas and my brother got the V-cam(which is very similair to the vidster). It's pretty fun exept that when i replaced it's batteries a few days ago (cause it wasn't turning on) it stopped working. It might be that Iv'e had it for a long time but would a long time be 7 months? Anyway, the editing software is pretty good but I prefer the digital blue. (i had this a few years ago and you could put really good special effects in your videos) I had real fun with the Digital Blue but it stopped working on me for a good 9 months. (Is it me or do i just have bad luck with cameras)But the Digital blue is hard to find these days.
Well hope this review was helpful.

Not just for kids,

If you embrace low resolution and love its predecessor, the venerable PXL-2000, you may just fall in love with the Vidster.
Small, compact and reliable. The Vidster runs on AA batteries, has no moving parts, records directly to flash memory and easily downloads across a USB connection. I easily imported these movie files into iMovie and Avid Express Pro and exported Quicktime files to share over the internet with friends as well as DVD's. This product is exactly what I was looking for.

Of course, this camera is marketed to kids. I'm a 25 year old film novice with no money (basically, a big kid), and bought this camera to gain some video experience. It has been a cheap, fun and easy way to do that, and I highly recommend it for anyone in a similar situation.
The worst part of the camera, for me, is that the included video-editing software is too inflexible. It doesn't allow the film-maker to make certain important decisions (such as: precisely how long a given scene will play before being cut; and, the precise sequence of scenes). Another thing to bear in mind is that the 32MB SD card that comes with the camera only stores about 5 min. of video. If you want to get the most out of this camera, I highly recommend buying an SD card with more memory (I bought a 256MB for $20) as a supplement. Other reviewers have said that it runs batteries down quickly, but I've found that a single four-pack can last for weeks, especially if I'm careful to turn the camera off when not in use. Eventually, I will buy a higher resolution camera and some better editing software. As a training device, however, this camera has been extremely useful, and I'm still having fun with it. Again: I highly recommend it for broke film novices such as myself.

My kids love it. Easy to use . Picture quality about what you'd expect from something you'd let your children be responsible for. Still great. My 9 yr. old even used it for a project at school and my 6 yr. old uses it to video tape his own music videos. They received it for Christmas and it still gets more use then most other things.

Great Video Camera for Kids,

My child received this video camera for Christmas after receiving another video camera that was total garbage. This camera was SO much better than the other one, and was only $10 more. The features, software and ease of use were fantastic. After showing him just once how to upload to the computer, he was a real pro. Thumbs up - WAY up.
