Amazon.com Review

HyperScan is the combination of two pursuits big among today's kids: video games and collectable cards. The system takes the novel approach of actually incorporating the cards as assets in the video game through the use of IntelliCards, trading cards with tiny RFID chips buried inside that can send information to, and sometimes receive info from, the HyperScan console. In the included X-Men 2-D fighting game, players select their character by swiping one of the included character cards over the flashing red scanner built into the console's clamshell design, much the way a grocer would scan a can of beans. Should the player win the battle, their character is rewarded with increased experience, strength points, and other stats that are then transferred back onto the card with another scan. Players can get deeper into a game by using other cards to add attacks, level up other X-Men characters, and execute cool finishing moves. The system's graphics aren't much to write home about--think original PlayStation--but they're in line with the system's price when you consider that the first game is included. The cards feature full-color graphics of the characters or items they represent, along with beginning stats--updated stats are viewed only on the console. HyperScan makes a good system for avid card traders provided they have access to other HyperScan players. By itself, though, HyperScan is not much of a system. The console comes with one controller (but has ports for two), X-Men game, six X-Men cards, AC power pack, AV connection cables, and instructions. --Porter B. Hall

Product Description

HyperScan is the first gaming system that combines card collecting and video gaming. Scan your cards and your favorite characters come to life on your TV screen. During game play, you can pause and scan Modification Cards to enhance your combat offensive and defensive capabilities, as well as special abilities. When victory is yours, re-scan and your new powers are upgraded onto your card for use in future conflicts! Advanced 32-bit processor provides excellent graphics, speed and sound - for sophisticated, quality play.

HyperScan requires a TV and CD-ROM (not included) and is portable enough to take from place to place. This special set includes HyperScan console and X-Men Game Pack (with CD and cards).

Other game packs sold separately. Game packs contain a game CD and about 100 game cards; 10-20 Character Cards and the rest Modification Cards - with at least 20 hours of play on each Character Card. Cards in game packs will be available based on a rarity scheme, meaning that players won't know what cards they're getting in their game packs, making them collectible.

A gift for a 6 year old January 14, 2007
We purchased this game console for our six year old son, for Christmas. He had asked for it, so we ordered it, and it promptly showed up on our door step about a week later, and this was during the christmas rush. The unit is smaller than I expected but it has been sturdy enough. It was easy to hook up, our nine year learned quickly how to use it, and easily taught our six year old. They play with it about a couple opf times a week. All in all it has been a wise purchase for our six and nine year old, although our thirteen year old has no interest.

Hyperscan Game System February 20, 2007
By Evelyn
Amazon Verified Purchase
My 8 yr old grandson wanted this for Christmas but the price was over $100 so when I saw it for under $15 on Amazon, I got it for his birhtday in February. He and his 9 yr old brother LOVE it! I also purchased one booster pack at the same time. Then I found another game and booster pack at Target for a very reasonable price. So he got the game system, two games and two booster pack of cards all for under $50.00! Both he and I were happy! (The only reason I give this a "4" is because the games are a bit hard to come by)

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
The console itself is an interesting design you have to scan cards to do certain things through out the games you play. Poor design for anybody 10+ years old. Great for younger kids though. The controller isn't to bad but it isn't great.

don't spend any money on a hyperscan
you will find that most of the positive reviews are from 1) people that have no personal experience with video games and bought it for their young children, or 2) young children. Read more

even worse than the Virtual Boy
I bought this system knowing full well how crappy it is. This is nice find for video game collectors, as it will be extinct soon. The games themselves are a real chore to play. Read more

Fun but fragile

I like the hyperscan because you can collect and trade cards. I also think the gameplay is fun. The only bad thing is the cards come at random. Read more
