5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Really Something Different!
Hesitant at first about purchasing this for my 5 year old dinosaur-mad little girl. Happy that I did. Does all it's advertised to do. Put batts in and tried it out before wrapping it up for Xmas....had a ball just playing with it myself. Looks a little mean in the beginning but it plays, growls, bites his bone, walks around the house "looking" at things & comes when you...

3.0 out of 5 stars Keeping my fingers crossed
I bought this toy as my son's BIG Christmas gift and am keeping my fingers crossed that he will really like it, though I don't have much hope that this gift will provide more than 30+/- minutes of entertainment.

I can't comment on the durability outside of the "skin" feels like it could be easily torn.

Put batts in and tried it out before wrapping it up for Xmas....had a ball just playing with it myself. Looks a little mean in the beginning but it plays, growls, bites his bone, walks around the house "looking" at things & comes when you call it. It's like an ugly puppy that somehow starts to look adorable. Has great facial(?!)expressions. My daughter is going to LUV this, and to me, seeing her so happy is worth the pricetag. Super toy!

5.0 out of 5 stars DRex for my Twins, November 6, 2008
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: D-Rex Interactive Dinosaur (Toy)
I got this for my twins and they love their DRex. My daughter and son plays hide and seek with it. They both love to pet D Rex and watch him react to it (waging his tail, making some happy noise & moving his eye brows). I do just let DRex do his thing around the kids. But I use the controller when I'm playing with my kids with DRex. I've even shot videos of them playing with their DRex. I'll post them on Youtube. Over all, I'm pretty happy to have gotten this for my twins.

5.0 out of 5 stars Batteries are Not included, December 17, 2008

D-REX is as cute as the other reviews say; However, The Batteries are NOT included!

The Product Description reads incorrectly: "Requires four "C" batteries, included, and two "AA" batteries, not included."

It should read ( as it does on the box): "Requires five "C" batteries in his tail and two "AAA" batteries in the bone-shaped controller."

Also, contrary to some, its reptilian skin is lifelike in appearance and seems durable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Keeping my fingers crossed, October 31, 2008

I bought this toy as my son's BIG Christmas gift and am keeping my fingers crossed that he will really like it, though I don't have much hope that this gift will provide more than 30+/- minutes of entertainment.

I can't comment on the durability outside of the "skin" feels like it could be easily torn.

Although it's facial expressions are kind of cute there were some immediately obvious issues (after 15 minutes of play)
- the remote only works at a distance closer than 8 feet
- slow to respond, leads to multiple remote button pushes
- the sensors have a very limited distance. You have to walk up to the dino for it to trigger in guard mode.
- slow speed when moving
- it lists to the left as it walks so it has a tendency to circle, which means it cannot "seek" you out.
- if it runs into something it does not back up
- a minor issue is the bone will not stay in it's mouth

It makes some cute (& not so cute) noises and it's facial expressions (when you can see them) are moderately endearing. It DOES walk on low pile carpet, still if I had to do it over again, I would wait for a second generation of d-rex (or pleo).

3.0 out of 5 stars One Word: Overrated, January 7, 2009

My wife and I vowed to thoroughly research the Toys this year and make very careful selections. We were tired of taking Xmas toys to the Goodwill only 6 months after Xmas. I was very skeptical of this toy as with most toys like this, essentially they all use virtually the same computer program to control different looking toys (robots, etc.) Our other son already had an expensive robot that claims to do similar things with a few changes like the petting and putting a bone in its mouth but basically this is the same thing as most other purported "artificial intelligent" animals, robots, etc.

But the reviews on Amazon were so good we thought this was a good bet. NOT. The thing people tend to forget is that the vast majority of reviews are written within a short period from when the item is received. I agree this is a great twist on the intelligent robot/creature thing. But the novelty of it wears off quickly. At least it has for our 7-yo. It's been 2 weeks and he claims he still loves it, but he only plays with it maybe once every 5 days, and usually only to demonstrate it to someone who hasn't seen it before. Granted we all thought it was really cool the first 5 days, but after that, I realized that this thing really doesn't do that much.

The creature is well executed, it looks cool, and the skin feels cool and the movement of the face an eyes is neat. But again, the novelty wears off quick as it just doesn't do a whole lot and has no educational value. I could see maybe a 3-5 year old maybe treating the thing like a pet and therefore taking interest in it a lot longer. But in a household where we have a WII, and Playstation 3, robots, RC cars, Legos galore, etc., this thing just sits around not getting played with.

Bottom line, as usual with 50% or more of the toys they get (that they want bad), a waste of money. I'm wondering what percentage of the reviews here might have been planted by the manufacturer as either 90% of the reviews were written in the first 5 days, or most of the kids that this was reviewed for are younger. Otherwise I am totally shocked at the average rating. Mark my words - they'll lose interest after a couple weeks.

We bought this as a Christmas present for our son, so we have yet to open it. I just wanted to let people know that if they do order this from Amazon it arrives in a big box marked TOYS D-REX on it. When ours got here my boys were with me and I had to do some VERY quick thinking to not spoil his Christmas present. Just an FYI other than that we are Very excited to open it uo and play with it :)

This was fun... for about 30 minutes. The animation and reactions are remarkable, and the dino really does "guard" an area, and come to you when called. Just be sure there are no other noises around to compete with your voice. He is kind of fun for when my daughter's friends come over and to chase the dog with. But don't expect too much excitement, he is very slow.

We bought D-Rex for my 7yr old boy last Christmas and were sadly disappointed. He played with it for ALL of one day, Christams Day! Rex's sounds effects are rather cute with roaring, laughing and farting however the commands when given with the remote control are slow to follow if at all. His cute little chubby legs get caught on one another causing him to go in one big circle rather than straight ahead.
D-rex is definitely better suited for 3 to 4 yr olds with a long attention span. He is just not as inter-active as we had anticipated.

5.0 out of 5 stars D Rex Amazing fun for 5 year old boy, January 7, 2009
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: D-Rex Interactive Dinosaur (Toy)
I was very hesitant to purchase a $150 toy that requires batteries as my experience has been that battery powered toys quickly end up in the corner and kid's lose interest when the batteries are dead and mom and dad lose interest in replacing them. I also thought it would get old quick. But my 5 year old boy wanted this from "Santa" more than anything else for Christmas so we rolled the dice and bought it. It has exceeded my expectations in most ways.

The toy is very realistic and has great facial expressions which are a bit freaky at first. My little boy has found ways to incorporate this toy into with his other toys, such as pretending the D-Rex is trying to attack his Star Wars figures and my little girl will borrow it and let her barbies take a ride on his back pretending that he is a "nice T-Rex". The autonomous nature of the D Rex makes this type of playing very fun as the movements and actions are unpredictable which enhances the feeling that it is a real creature rather than just a toy.

On the downside, it doesn't move around very much and ends up sitting in one place most of the time taking a couple of steps and then stopping for long periods of time. It doesn't recognize sound and light as well as I had hoped, but this is probably due to having the television or radio on in the background confusing the sensors. This doesn't really matter to my boy anyway who typically sits on the floor and plays with it so the fact that is doesn't move around quickly or often is fine for his style of play.

I don't know if they will eventually lose interest, but the realism and randomness of the D Rex has kept them playing with it daily since Christmas morning.

If you kid is imaginative and likes to be creative, they will use the toy in ways you never imagined. If they just like to drive around remote control cars, this will not satisfy them.
