Fearsome Predator or Lovable Pet?
Though he wears a collar and stands only 14 inches tall, this D-Rex is still a "fearsome" predator. Kids will be enthralled by his realistic skin, and lifelike movements, which are possible thanks to biomorphic robotics. His fiery orange eyes scan the room, and his neck and tail "muscles" ripple with movement. D-Rex has a personality all his own with over 100 sounds and movements, as well as sensors that respond to light, sound, and touch.

Become His Master
Using the bone-shaped remote control, kids can program D-Rex to perform a number of actions from up to 25 feet away. Pressing "attack" mode makes D-Rex stand alert, and pressing it a second time sends him on a roaring rampage. In "guard" mode, D-Rex stiffens and scans the room, moving his head from side to side. At the first sound of an intruder, D-Rex will roar to alert you.

While D-Rex is an effective guardian, like any pet he has needs of his own. If D-Rex's tail stops wagging, he may want attention. Pet his head and quickly get his tail wagging. Also, to keep his hunger at bay, kids can feed him. His jaws will move up and down, stopping only after he has had his fill.

Lifelike Interaction
As kids learn to tame D-Rex and keep him happy, they can relate to him much like a real-live pet. In "seek" mode, D-Rex comes when you whistle, and in "prank" mode, he repeats funny sounds. Best of all, an advanced training feature allows kids to teach him a specific sequence of actions that he will then repeat on command.

As a power-saving feature, D-Rex takes a "Dino-nap" when not being used. Parents will want to assist with removing the toy's packaging and installing two "AAA" batteries (not included) in the bone remote control.

What's in the Box
D-Rex Interactive Dinosaur, five "C" batteries, and bone control. (Two "AAA" batteries for the remote control not included.)

Advanced, "biomorphic" robotic technology allows D-Rex to function like a real pet.

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I should start by saying that I am a very picky toy buyer and owner. But this toy is AWESOME! He is so funny when he answers your questions by shaking his head and saying "Uh-uh." He is just plain fun! We got this for Christmas last year and still play with it at least once or twice a week...all of us! I have to assume the other reviews about the bad skin are due to a bad production batch from Mattel. I'd say keep looking.

A couple of cautions: Read the directions. You have to use him correctly to make him work. Also, this is not a toy for little ones because he is a little scary, and the skin is stitched together in various areas. While this contributes to the flexible and realistic look, it also does add a dimension of fragility. If your child will be rough with him, DRex may not be the best choice.

D-Rex Skin issues November 27, 2009
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I purchased this item for my daughter for Christmas. I did not open yet so I can not say for sure there is not an issue with the skin. But after reading the reviews on here I got worried and considered returning the item. Unfortunately this is the only toy my child wants. So I did a little research and I found out that D-Rex comes with a 2 year Warranty. As I said before I am not sure if my dinosaur is going to have any problems but at least I know there is something that can be done if there is a problem. Here are the details.

Warranty Length: 2 years

Supplier Warranty: Mattel, Inc. warrants to the original consumer purchaser that this product will be free of defects in material or workmanship for two years (unless specified in alternate warranties) from the date of purchases. If defective, return the product along with proof of the date of purchase, postage prepaid, to Consumer Relations, 636 Girard Avenue, East Aurora, New York 14052, for replacement or refund at our option. This warranty does not cover damage resulting from unauthorized modification, accident, misuse or abuse. In no event shall we be responsible for incidental, consequential, or contingent damages (excet in those states that do not allow this exclusion or limitation). This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state. Some states do not allow the exclusion of incidntal or consequential damages, so the above exclusions or limitations may not apply to you. Valid only in U.S.A. 2 - Year Limited Warranty

Problems with DREX skin November 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I have now ordered and returned two 2009 versions of DREX from Amazon. Both have had issues with the "skin" of the DREX being torn or actually rubbing off on the clear plastic display window of the packaging. I asked Amazon to look at their inventory and they said that all of their stock of 2009 DREX have the same problem. I have researched SPIKE v DREX and felt the DREX was the best fit for my 4.5 yo daughter, but I will have to buy it from somewhere else because either Amazon has a bad batch or they are 'melting' in the warehouse.
