I should start by saying that I am a very picky toy buyer and owner. But this toy is AWESOME! He is so funny when he answers your questions by shaking his head and saying "Uh-uh." He is just plain fun! We got this for Christmas last year and still play with it at least once or twice a week...all of us! I have to assume the other reviews about the bad skin are due to a bad production batch from Mattel. I'd say keep looking.
A couple of cautions: Read the directions. You have to use him correctly to make him work. Also, this is not a toy for little ones because he is a little scary, and the skin is stitched together in various areas. While this contributes to the flexible and realistic look, it also does add a dimension of fragility. If your child will be rough with him, DRex may not be the best choice.

I purchased this item for my daughter for Christmas. I did not open yet so I can not say for sure there is not an issue with the skin. But after reading the reviews on here I got worried and considered returning the item. Unfortunately this is the only toy my child wants. So I did a little research and I found out that D-Rex comes with a 2 year Warranty. As I said before I am not sure if my dinosaur is going to have any problems but at least I know there is something that can be done if there is a problem. Here are the details.
Warranty Length: 2 years Supplier Warranty: Mattel, Inc. warrants to the original consumer purchaser that this product will be free of defects in material or workmanship for two years (unless specified in alternate warranties) from the date of purchases. If defective, return the product along with proof of the date of purchase, postage prepaid, to Consumer Relations, 636 Girard Avenue, East Aurora, New York 14052, for replacement or refund at our option. I have now ordered and returned two 2009 versions of DREX from Amazon. Both have had issues with the "skin" of the DREX being torn or actually rubbing off on the clear plastic display window of the packaging. I asked Amazon to look at their inventory and they said that all of their stock of 2009 DREX have the same problem. I have researched SPIKE v DREX and felt the DREX was the best fit for my 4.5 yo daughter, but I will have to buy it from somewhere else because either Amazon has a bad batch or they are 'melting' in the warehouse.

I recently got this toy for my son and cannot tear him away from it! He has been following D-Rex all over the house and telling his friends about it. He learned how to teach the D-Rex tricks and is so excited that he has an interactive toy to play with!

I just opened the D Rex I purchased on Amazon in mid-November for my daughter as a Christmas present. After reading some of the reviews, I was concerned about its skin. The skin and the whole dino looks fine -- no problem with melting or tearing. I think my daughter will have fun training the dino and impressing others with its tricks.

I have been eyeing DRex for a little while, but the other reviewers about the 2009's skin made me very nervous. Because of Amazon's customer service, Mattel's product warranty and the fact that the price dropped significantly, I leaped and bought one. He arrived yesterday and so far, I could not be happier. I bought him for me and I have enjoyed playing with him. My schnauzers are intrigued too, especially when he chomps on their rawhide bones. The skin IS very pliable and perhaps the way a normal child plays with a toy makes DRex too fragile for kid use. I don't know. What I can tell you is that I am glad I took the leap of faith. This toy (a complete under-description) is just the coolest thing and this adult LOVES her DRex!

Thank goodness for Amazon reviews! I recently bought this from Kohls and had put it away until Christmas before I stumbled upon these recent reviews here on Amazon. Since this dude costs so much, I was definitely worried. I took it out of the box last night, and right away I noticed a "spot" on his cheek that appeared to have been picked at or something. I ran my finger on it, and sure enough it started to peel off the color. The strechy rubber material seemed to be in tact, but the paint on the skin was rubbing off before my eyes with almost no pressure at all. It seems like a great concept, but POORLY executed. Last years version seems to have mostly positive reviews, so they must be doing something different. All I can say is don't waste a hundred dollars or more on this thing or you will end up extremely frustrated. I have emailed customer service to find out if there is a known production issue, but I have not heard back...

I read some reviews about this toy saying that the ones from Amazon had problems with the paint peeling off so I was hesitant to buy it. However, I bought him and I was very pleased to see that his paint was just fine when he arrived. He is a perfect toy for a 5 yr old who just loves dinosaurs. The only problem I can see is that the skin feels a little fragile, like it could be torn easily. That hasn't happened yet though but we haven't had it for very long. I would recommend D-Rex for any kid who loves Dinosaurs.
