4.0 out of 5 stars Not THAT Dan Brown
If you're looking for another book along the lines of Da Vinci Code, this is not it. "Matter" is a book of poems written by a completely different Dan Brown.

Having said that, this book is definately worth the read. It's only around 50 pages, but the poems are full of power and wit. Some excellent poetry from an excellent writer, give it a try.

I have read all of Dan Brown's books, that is, Dan Brown author of The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons and Digital Fortress. This book called Matter is NOT the same author but a poet. Before making the same mistake as I did, unless you specifically want this poet and book of poetry, BEWARE that this is not the Dan Brown author most of us have become familiar with.

You know...I agree that everyone SHOULD be responsible for their own actions and decisions...and fine - this Dan Brown preceeds the Da Vinci Code Dan Brown...but it was an extremely peculiar way I must admit that Amazon grouped the two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT writers together for a "Combo" book deal. To me, it was a surprise finding a fictional book combined with poetry, much like a Vegetarian ordering a meat-free cookbook and finding the seller combined the purchase with a Gift Certificate to Outback Steak House. TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT PREFERENCES. However one looks at it, the point many readers find helpful is that this is probably NOT the Dan Brown they are looking for.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!, March 29, 2004
By
This review is from: Matter (Paperback)
If you are expecting, as I was, that this book is similar to "Angels & Demons," "Deception Point," or "The DaVinci Code," you will be GREATLY disappointed. I did not read these "editorial reviews" before placing my order. Instead I relied on the Amazon.com banner that "Customers who bought this book also bought: Deception Point and Angels & Demons."

I do not think that one should have to read well into "what others are saying" before they get a VERY CLEAR description of what Amazon.com is selling.

And watch out -- you will not get all of your costs back because of Amazon's failure to clearly list the content in the top screen of the description.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Da Vinci Dan Brown, December 14, 2004

This is not by the Da Vinci Code Dan Brown, and it's not even good poetry. The higher ratings are by fairly obvious shills. It's a shame someone is making money off of the coincidence of name. Amazon should not list this book when I click on "Dan Brown" while looking at the Da Vinci Code.

5.0 out of 5 stars ...but GOOD poems., October 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Matter (Hardcover)
Yes this is a book of poems--not a thriller--but they're excellent; a little like Frost. Here's one I particularly like:

On Being Asked by Our Receptionist if I Liked the Flowers

"What flowers?" I said. "These flowers," she said,
Gesturing leftward with her head,
And there it was: a vase of flowers
That hadn't graced that fort of hers
The day before. Did I say a vase?
All of an urn is what it was:
Capacious home to a bursting sun
Of thirty lilies if to one.
A splendor I'd have seen for sure,
If less employed in seeing her.

If you like this one, you'll probably like others.

3.0 out of 5 stars What's in a name? A lot of residual sales, that's what!, February 16, 2005
This review is from: Matter (Paperback)
Ok, so I don't know if this is the same Dan Brown that I have grown to adore in Angels & Demons or DaVinci Code, but I do know that, like everyone else it seems, I see Dan Brown and click "add to list". THIS BOOK IS NOT WHAT IT SEEMS!

You know, even the name "Matter" sounds Dan Brown-ish... however this is a book of poems that, to be honest, I glanced at and thought "well, that's nifty" and then put aside in favor of Digital Fortress. At least it's a $9.00 book that many of us bought by mistake rather than a $20 book, right? I mean, how sweet would it be to have a zillion book sales simply because your book is linked w/ so many best sellers? ...I should have thought of that when I wrote my books... hmmmm...

Anyhow, still not a thriller no matter how you read it. Even if you speak in ominious inflection, it's still a book of poems. Kudos to the author for writing it - - more Kudos still for having it linked where everyone clicks before they read what it is! <grin>

5.0 out of 5 stars Great poetry. This book was published a long time before the DaVinci Dan Brown published his successful books, June 15, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Matter (Paperback)
I truly enjoyed Dan Brown's poetry and can highly recommend the book. Obviously, this Dan Brown is not the DaVinci Code Dan Brown but he is not a scam artist either. Just read the publishing dates for the various Dan Brown titles and you will find that this collection of poems was published in 1996. The fact that Dan Brown calls himself Dan Brown should mainly be blamed on his parents if there is anyone to blame. To bad Dan the poet man has not produced anything else as of yet. Hopefully all of this attention will make him re-evaluate his true talents.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not what you expect, December 31, 2003
By A Customer

Matter is a book of poems. It isn't like Dan Brown's other thriller books. The poems are great, but don't buy it thinking you are going to see Robert Langdon in a great clash of religion and conspiracy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Okay Dumbar*es!!!, December 23, 2008
This review is from: Matter (Paperback)
For all those idiots slagging off this Dan Brown for 'riding on a famous authors' name" etc....... Have you not realised that this was published in 1996? Well before the other Dan Brown was made famous.

Yes they are different people, get over it! and stop slagging the poet off for having written a book years before someone else with the same name did!!
Stars are to balance out the obnoxious fools giving this a low rating without even blimen reading it

5.0 out of 5 stars Matter, December 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Matter (Hardcover)
A real discovery! I'm not a poetry person, but I LOVED this book. Some of the poems made me laugh out loud, some are quite profound--but even the funny ones aren't JUST funny; they also touch on larger human truths. Most of the poems are rhymed and metered, but still have a light, conversational style. See the poem about the receptionist in the review below and you'll see what I mean!
