About the Author

Tom DeRosa, as an experienced science educator and a committed creationist, has incorporated both his passions in the founding and the directing of the Creation Studies Institute, a growing national creation organization whose chief focus is education. He holds a Masters Degree in Education, with the emphasis of science curriculum. He is an author and sought out enthusiastic Creation speaker who has a genuine love for the education of our next generation.

Carolyn Reeves is especially skilled at creating ways to help students develop a greater understanding of not just scientific concepts, but how these are applied within the world around us. Carolyn retired after a 30-year career as a science teacher, finished a doctoral degree in science education, and began a new venture as a writer and an educational consultant. She and her husband make their home in Oxford, MS, where they are active members of North Oxford Baptist Church. The Reeves have three children, three in-law children, and nine grandchildren.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands On Chemistry Made Easy, January 12, 2010
This review is from: Matter: Its Properties and Its Changes (Investigate the Possibilities Series) (Investigate the Possibilities: Elementary Physics) (Perfect Paperback)
The teacher's guide gives you teaching tips, additional material, and answers to the questions in the book. It also gives a fyi grading guide in case you need help with grading.

The student journal is basically a lab book for the student to record everything from the experiments and questions in the book. It covers The Activity: Procedure and Observations, Thinking About, Dig Deeper (extra activities for further learning), What Did You Learn, and Stumper's Corner (student writes 2 questions about the topic that are meant to "stump" someone) for each of the 20 activities. It also has a place in the back for additional notes.

This is a fun set because it's chemistry, and chemical reactions are just plain fun (in my opinion). The dig deeper portion allows the student to get a more in depth understanding of the concepts being presented. The student journal helps them stay focused on the task at hand. The glossary and appendix at the back of the book is also a plus.

Everything is laid out for the teacher. The lessons begin with observations and experiments followed by the lesson which captures a child's attention. If you have the supplies needed, you can quickly look over the lesson the night before and easily teach the lesson the next day. Or, if you have an older child, they can do the lesson completely on their own. For the most part, the items used in the experiments are household items.

Note: This is a creation science based book. I received a copy of this set for the purpose of writing a review on my blog. No other compensation was received. All opinions are my own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Educational, December 5, 2009

Tom DeRosa and Carolyn Reeves have created a fun and educational series of science workbooks for kids aged 8 to 11 years. The student workbook is colorful. The student journal has plenty of room to record observations. The teacher guide contains concise objectives and goals for each lesson. There are 20 terrific investigations (lessons/experiments) in each text that are designed for children in 3rd through 6th grade.

"Forces and Motion" introduces the scientific minds of Archimedes, Daniel Bernoulli, Galileo and Isaac Newton. Topics investigated include friction, gravity, jet propulsion, pulleys, and much more.

"Energy" focuses its teaching on light, heat, magnetism, circuits, and energy from solar, wind, water and nuclear sources.

"Matter" teaches chemistry, acids and bases, salt, metals, phases of matter and much more.

These books would enhance the science curriculum of homeschooled and publicly educated kids. They would even be fun "rainy day" activities without an education requirement. They contain creative teaching activities including dramatic sketches, experiments and writing assignments.
