5.0 out of 5 stars Superb and Inspired!, March 28, 2000
This review is from: Matthew 1-7: The MacArthur New Testament Commentary (Hardcover)
John MacArthur continues to educate and enlighten Christians in his New Testament Commentary series. In this commentary, Dr. MacArthur gives a detailed and thorough exposition of the first seven chapters of the book of Matthew including an in-depth analysis of the beloved Sermon on the Mount. Each chapter begins with several verses taken from the book of Matthew and is followed by a lengthy and thought provoking literal interpretation. If you are looking for an educated and spiritually blessed exposition, this commentary series is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exegetical Masterpiece., April 7, 2009
This review is from: Matthew 1-7: The MacArthur New Testament Commentary (Hardcover)
Dr. John MacArthur's commentary on the first seven books of Matthew's Gospel is nothing short of an exegetical masterpiece. Carfully written, "comparing scriptures with scriptures," he gracefully unpacks the first of the synoptic gospels with care and precision.

MacArthur's treatment of the Kingship of Christ exults Jesus at every turn; from the Virgin Birth to the Sermon on the Mount he was able to capture the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

I was especially blessed at MacArthurs exegesis on The Kingdom of God; of how Israel's rejection forced Jesus into a sort of "voluntary exile" until such time when He will rule and reign in righteousness as the Son of David on the Millennial Throne.

MacArthur's treatment of the Christ-King's Forerunner was nothing short of masterful as well. As the herald of The King, John's ministry perfectly laid low the high places, smothed the rough places and made-ready a people prepared for the coming of the LORD. (QUESTION: Could/Would and unchanging God operate the same way in Jesus' 2d Coming?)

I am using this resource during my devotional time and I cannot express the way in which it has set my soul on fire and deepened my love for the King and His Word. Like King David in Psalm 119, "I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches."

5.0 out of 5 stars Conservative: Thorough, Scholarly, Yet Easily Understood, August 24, 2001
This review is from: Matthew 1-7: The MacArthur New Testament Commentary (Hardcover)
Good solid hermeneutics and clear presentation make this an ideal volume for the pastor, student, or serious layperson. MacArthur is not only an excellent Bible teacher, but he writes simply for popular use, yet nothing is water-down. This is a most thorough work, useful in preparing sermons, lessons, or personal growth. MacArthur interprets from a moderate dispensational viewpoint and seems to follow obejctive principle of interpretation. He brings in a generous amount of cultural and background information, as well as other Bible texts. I suggest you purchase the entire Matthew set. There is probably none finer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Theological and Practical depth, June 22, 2011

This review is from: Matthew 1-7: The MacArthur New Testament Commentary (Hardcover)
Dr. MacArthur continues to expound on God's Word with theological and practical depth. This commentary is not just academic, although it certainly fills the bill in that area, but it also reveals the majesty of the Messiah and what it means to our lives.

It's cliche, but even if you don't consider yourself a theologian this commentary is a good read, at any level.

I was looking for notes that dug into the text a bit deeper then my study Bible, but did not want to go to the extent of "high seminary academics" so to speak. MacArthur's explanations are thorough, but accessible filling in details of history, culture, and where necessary the Greek roots of the text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Resource For Teaching, March 26, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Matthew 1-7: The MacArthur New Testament Commentary (Hardcover)
This is a great resource for anyone wanting to teach from the book of Matthew. It is not a technical commentary, in that it does not discuss the Greek grammar very closely, but it is based on solid behind-the-scenes study of the original language. Its primary value is in synthesizing the meaning of the text, bringing out the sound theology of it, and giving the preacher lots of good material for a message.
