This album is excelent. I think it might even be a contender for Keith's best album. I do agree with someone below me who said alot of the sarcasm of this album is flying over people's heads. Even over the head of Amazon's reviewer Dalton Higgins (who I'm sure would be classified under the kinds of people Keith makes fun of on his records). Its oozing with sarcasm, how could this go over your head? Overall this is one of the rawest albums I have ever heard. Basically its his one-man hating on assualt on commercial rap. Insanely enjoyable, especially with how wack today's rap really is. Production is also under-rated. Its experimental, with a raw edge. But for some reason people were surprised that a Kool Keith album doesn't have normal sounding beats. I'm sure eventually everyone will stop sleeping on Keith's albums and realize how stupid they were for hating on him. All the classics got mad hated on (3 Feet High and Rising for example) when they were first dropped.

I mean, he can't make it anymore plain as day:
It's the most sublime of comedy, so fake that it sounds real,
the record's sounds are so totally almost like others that he is making fun of people without them realizing it.
The last few album have been total parody in the most slyest of ways of the hip hop scene.
Each record cover tells you exactly who is is making fun of.
It's total satire!
Look at each record cover since Sex Style and see how the sounds are totalling making fun of others so exactly that they sound like they are really really like that, one thin step between parody and the real thing.
Come'on long time Kool Kieth fans should know he's been doing this every album! From day one.
He is beyond genious at this point!
Every album is amazing on it's own merits, and then when you see the jokes he is making not only in the words but in the sounds, your head expands to the size of the universe!

I was very afraid to hear this album, since Black Elvis is not really what every Kool Keith fan would want again. I like this album better then Dr. Dooom, but not as good as Sex Style and Dr. Octagon. If you are a die hard fan like me, you definately like this album. Ok, the beats ain't as great as it was some time ago, but his lyrics are still the best (from east to west :-)) He curses more in the first track then on all the previous albums together and it seems that he is more mad at some rappers then before. That is what this album is about I guess. Dissing all the wack rappers, who shouldn't be famous.

To all the real fans, buy it, IT IS WORTH YOUR MONEY!

Alright, I see too that some tracks didn't have as good productions as compared to Keith's other albums. But, I'll stop you when you diss the lyrics. In this one, he just purely eliminates the mainstream industry and ways. Pure hardcore, pure. That first skit Recoupment just had tore me up in laughter.

But, other than that - a must hear for Kool Keith fans.. he still whooping em' a.

No, Matthew doesn't have the wizardry production by the Automator that can be found on Dr. Octagon. No, Matthew doesn't possess the best flow ever by any emcee that can be found on Dr. Dooom. However, Matthew offers the TRUE Kool Keith.

No costumes, no off-the-wall characters. Just Kool Keith, the mic, and a lyrical arsenal that once again (like Dr. Dooom) blows away the commercial hip-hop music industry. I kid you not.

When I first picked up this album. I gave it a listen. I gave it another listen, and another, and another for about the first week I had it, and I'll admit it, at first I didn't buy into it. I would even go as far to say it was disappointing at first. Shame on me. The album grew on me. Then, the album grew on me more, and more, and more. Now, I've listened to this album non-stop for the past two years, and I can't get enough of it. It's slowely catching up to the Dr. Dooom project as far as being Keith's best work (lyrically).

Despite what others may try and indulge you with, this album is nothing less than hard work from Keith. Production wise, the album falls short of his previous classics, but it's not as terrible as some others make it out to be. Lyrically, I honestly can't decide which is better, Dr. Dooom or Matthew. It's that damn good.

If you're not into Keith's other albums, you sure as hell won't understand this one, so if that's that case, avoid at all cost. If you're a die-hard fan of the man, and you enjoy bold and audacious lyrics that no other emcee on the planet could pull off and still make a good record, look no further. Get this.

Hmmmm... As with all new Keith releases, I was pretty fired up about hearing this one. Last year Keith released the brilliant "First Come, First Served" album AND the notable "Black Elvis/Lost in Space" LP, and this year will see the release of the Analog Brothers album in addition to "Matthew." The first cut from the new album points back toward "No Chorus" from the Dr. Dooom LP. Unfortunately, almost every single other song on the CD does the same. Yes, Keith is my favorite MC, and he is entitled to rhyme about the lousy MCs and Kool Keith copy-cats currently plaguing the hip-hop record industry, but I definitely don't need an album full of these songs. The reason I like Kool Keith is because he has an incredible knack for making me laugh, and his more ridiculous songs are my favorites. Very little of this album is entertaining, and it doesn't produce more than a modest chuckle. The biggest gripe that I have about this album is the beats (and they were done by Kut Masta Kurt!). Almost every track sounds the same (a couple are dead ringers for the beat from the track "Black Elvis"), and with the similar subject matter of each song, it's tough to distinguish one track from the other. A complaint that I've heard about the Dr. Dooom album was that the beats were too stripped-down, and this album is so stripped-down that it lacks every bit of raw power that the Dr. Dooom album produced. These beats are so weak they sound like one of the keyboard accompaniments from a Wesley Willis album. For people who have never heard anything from Kool Keith (or have only heard the Dr. Octagon album) should pick up Sex Style or Dr. Dooom before looking at the Matthew LP. I hold Keith and Kut Masta Kurt to an extremely high standard, and with that said, I'm calling this new album a disappointment.

Poll your average Kool Keith fan. Ask him or her, which is your favorite Kool Keith album. If you received a respone of Dr. Octagon or Dr. Dooom, it's of little to no surprise. You may even get a handful of Black Elvis replies. How many would go with the Matthew album?

Didn't think so. To put is simply, I have a conflict of interest with this attitude towards such a great Kool Keith album. No, Matthew isn't my personal favorite Kool Keith release, but it's definitely not my least favorite either. This album has it's flaws yes, however, there's flowing rivers of flawlessness that seem to be left ignored.

How's the production you ask? To me, it's decent. Not Black Elvis or Spankmaster decent, but decent nonetheless. If one were to assign the production as being the album's leading weakness, I wouldn't object. It's no secret Kurt's job on the boards wasn't quite as ear tingling as past projects such as Sex Style and Dr. Dooom. On the other hand, how's Keith on the album? Sheer amazing. Lyrically, Keith comes with no costumes or wigs, just one pi$$ed off emcee and the mic. If you're looking for lyrics about Jupiter or mechanical female robots, you've come to the wrong place. If you're in search of Dr. Dooom part II, this is about as close as you'll get. Just don't expect part II to be equipped with an exclamation point like the first one.

This is Kool Keith's Keith album. He takes control of the beats and steers them right into New York where he can shoot his priceless words dead-on-target.
Everyone expects something different from what this album is--that was the point! Keith knew that people would listen to it and go "I can't believe he's doing this", but this is a Keith Thornton album. Doing what he does without all the costumes, his lyrics seem even more impressive without a theme. This proves that he doesn't have to rely on his wig and spaceship style. Keith's lyrics are as self-defacing and humorous as ever.
In a way, it's also one of the funniest things he's done. The lyrics depict more reality while proving to be Kool-Keith-hilarious.
Raw minimalism meets lyrical genius though simplicity. The man has a gift. Who else can say "F**k You.... Muthaf**ka!" as a chorus and make it more than well worth the time? Nobody!

Keith's worst album is still better than your best; so that's what's up!

Well Kool Keith returns once again with his new album "Matthew". And from the beginning you hear that Kool Keith is striking with some type of vengence against the music industry. He is really mad and upset on this album and he expresses it on every track. Yet his return and his regrouping with Kut Master Kurt is great. Where they hit you with the futuristic type sound and the outrages cut hard lyrics. Kool Keith makes this album a must buy for all Kool Keith fans, where he continues where he last left off. The album recieves a perfect score for three things. Creativity (innovation), Kool Keith, and the Production. Go cop the album. I'm Out
