The Matthew Passion 1754 (The Danzig Passion) is an extremely significant work with a unique formal structure: there are no arias but instead the work includes 34 hymns, which have a similar function to meditative arias. The text is pure Bible text (Matthew ch. 26 and 27). It is altogether a very dramatic piece constructed quite differently from Telemann's or even Bach's other oratorial passions. Furthermore, it is remarkable that the work is not just the only Matthew Passion from Danzig that is known, but it is also in Telemann's handwriting (it seems that passions taken from the other gospels were not performed in Danzig in the 18th century). This is without question the only recording of such a piece on the CD market today.
