Cataragus, a quiet and shy gentleman cat, finds his life turned upside down when he becomes infatuated with the lovely Mattie and goes to enormous lengths to have her notice him.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Cataragus is a shy cat who lives alone in a small cottage. But his quiet, orderly life suddenly changes when a feline named Mattie appears. He is very attracted to her, and tries to think of a way to get her attention. But all his attempts fail, and Mattie, tells him off. All is not lost, however, for between the two of them, Mattie and Cataragus find a way to be together. Kyte's sophisticated illustrationswith pale, elegant colorsperfectly enhance this tale of the shaky but tender beginning of the relationship between two charming cats. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Infatuation turns Cataragus, normally a quiet and "shy gentleman cat," into a bumbling fool willing to do anything to get Mattie to notice him. Too shy to simply say hello, Cataragus dresses up as a giant mouse, flies overhead by hanging onto a balloon, creates an avalanche of snow, and soaks Mattie with a garden hose. Although by this time she is certainly aware of him, only after Cataragus builds a bridge in the middle of the meadow does Mattie finally speak to him. Of course, love prevails, but by that time few readers will care. Illustrations are done in pale, understated colors, but the characters' feet are drawn distractingly large. Mattie and Cataragus lacks the charm of Kyte's The Last Elegant Bear (S. & S., 1986), and it won't be missed by most libraries. --Jeanette Larson, Mesquite Public Library, Tex.
