Book Description

0253211662 978-0253211668 March 22, 1998

"... an up-to-date, comprehensive, and accessible single-volume text to introduce the Mau Mau movement and its part in Kenya's nationalism and independence..." —International Journal of African Historical Studies

"Mau Mau and Kenya is a well written work which provides a clear and candid picture of the highly complex movements that were Mau Mau." —African History

Mau Mau and Kenya traces a unique peasant revolt against British colonialism. Was Mau Mau a national effort or an ethnic outburst? What were its political aims? Maloba describes the participants and their differing ideologies; relationships between the revolt and the conventional party politics of the Kenya African Union; and the impact of Mau Mau on decolonization in Kenya.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Maloba (history, Univ. of Delaware) has produced a scholarly study of the Mau Mau revolt in Kenya in the 1950s. While much has been written about Mau Mau over the years, those works have been more narrowly focused; Maloba's study differs in that it gives greater weight to the importance of nationalism as a factor in this revolt. While he compares and contrasts Mau Mau with other such peasant revolts, he also seeks to produce a systematic and comprehensive analysis of Mau Mau, including its political, economic, social, ideological, and military dimensions, from its inception down to its significance in postcolonial Kenya. Recommended for specialists in the field.

Review

Anyone looking for an up-to-date comprehensive, and accessible single-volume text to introduce the Mau Mau movement and its part in Kenya's nationalism and independence to an undergraduate readership need look no further. - John Lonsdale in INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HISTORICAL STUDIES ...the book stands very well as an overview. Instructors prescribing preliminary reading for classes studying the conflicts of decolonization should ensure that it is on their lists. - Anthony Clayton in CONFLICT QUARTERLY --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
