Fans of keyboard-driven rock with sophisticated arrangements and jazzy vocals will enjoy this debut CD from the "virtual artist" named Maudeo. The CD jacket calls her music "NEW Progressive Music for Baby Boomers," and names Steely Dan, Bonnie Raitt, and Earth, Wind and Fire among the artists who influenced her sound. Fortunately, those names are not used simply to hype the product; these songs will remind you of those and other artists. But what's most impressive is what Maudeo and her band do with those influences. She is able to assimilate those classic sounds into something distinctly personal, and the musicians complement her perfectly. The rhythm section rolls along like a high performance sports car, and the soloists (guitar, sax, and synthesizers) add a tasty dimension to Maudeo's vocals, which range from smooth and subtle to raw and bluesey. The keyboard work is outstanding and really distinguishes the sound of the entire CD. The songs range from the uptempo dance groove of "Jungle of Love" to the gentle ballad "Who Believes In You," and the highlights include "Human Kindness," "Situations," and the poignant and timely "Even A Healer Bleeds." I listened to this CD in various settings for almost a week without ever tiring of it; it's excellent for driving, getting together with friends, walking or working out, and dancing with someone special. If you'd like to hear some NEW CLASSIC ROCK, this CD will serve you well, "in a thousand situations."
