The Great Unknown,
By Paul McCrea (Nottingham United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Le Maudit (Audio CD)
Le Maudit, made in 1974, is an exceptional album by a young artist at the peak of her powers. Veronique Sanson was a 25 year-old Parisian, and had recently moved to the States after a whirlwind romance with Rock God Steve Stills. Her songs, mostly in French, betray her sense of disappointment with her marriage and life away from France. But they are wrapped in musicianship of the highest order. The title track is the stand-out... It means " The Cursed One " - and it's effectively an apology to the Frenchman she abandoned, Michel Berger. She concedes that " The pain has wiped out her sin. " You don't need to understand French to like this album - but it helps. Otherwise think of Joni Mitchell in her "Blue" period, or Rickie Lee Jones in the 1980s and you've some references.

Surprisingly Good!,

Veronique Sanson and Stephen Stills were an item for a while and some of Stephen's style inevitably rubbed off on Veronique. Listen to "On m'attend la bas" and you'd swear that was a Stephen Stills lick. That's Veronique playing guitar by the way.. A great album all the way around..
