This isn't a book for the beginner or a general text about the Mauser rifle. It is, however, a superior identification guide that is small enough to fit into a jacket pocket when heading out to look at a potential purchase.

The author manages to cram information about every single major type of Mauser rifle into this small book, including succinct but complete identifications of all the markings you are likely to find. The section detailing all of the various Waffenampts and inspectors marks and which factories they belonged to at different times has proven invaluable to me personally, allowing me to spot a couple of "all matching" guns at gunshows that were actually much less valuable "force matched" rifles.

It isn't a book for casually perusing pictures of these rifles or learning about the history of the gun. It is a collector's reference book and should be used as such. But if you own even one Mauser and want to identify what that mystery stamping means, this will do it, and if you continue to collect them this book will help you avoid many common scams and pitfalls.

This is an excellent reference for the experienced Mauser collector. It contains just about all the markings on the 50 or so Mausers in my collection. Very detailed and helpful reference. Highly recommended for the academic mauser collector.

This reviewer is new to the world of collecting military firearms and wanted to educate himself--especially regarding german mausers. Admittedly, this reviewer did not know the difference between a "byf" or a "dou" marking, or even where they might appear on the rifle. Unfortunately, this book is geared more towards experienced collectors, especially those who collect other than german mausers, and not novices. A picture (of which there are none) showing such basics as where the markings are located would have spoke a thousand words.

Far from a boring catalogue of markings and symbols, this is a fascinating collection of articles about world languages, their scripts, and how to read them. Presented along with alphabetical and numerical keys, the is a most interesting text to read, giving insights into unexpected matters as diverse as rifle origins, language origins and how to gain a glimmer of understanding about both.

I will say that this book is a MUST if you own 2 or more Mauser rifles, because it has an immense amount of information about Mauser rifle markings, for which there is a bewildering array of variants available across the global. However, I felt that it was a bit lacking in the one arena where you are going to find the most Mausers, per capita, on the current surplus rifle marketplace: the German k98K and the Yugoslavian M48 and M24/47 models. The amount of Nazi mfg. marks and Waffenamts are so great...and so varied, given the fact that these Russian captures are like manufacturing Frankensteins...that this books simply cannot address the great variety of JUST k98K markings currently identifiable.

So, if you just bought a Mitchell's Mauser or some k98K relic from one of the big Curios and Relics gun dealers here in the U.S., this may not be the best book to work with. I found a couple of websites with a lot more useful information in this regard, ones that helped me successfully ID the faded barrel stamps on my particular k98K Mauser, ones I could not find in this book.

However, having made my beefs clear, I STILL think this is a useful book to have. Especially if you are a collector, it's a great resource when you seen the occasional/rare Mauser sitting on a table at a gun show. It just might give you an edge as an informed buyer!

This book contains much information I fear was included to justify a second edition, such as discussions of Thai and Islamic calendars, but fails to include a single photo of a rifle to illustrate where and how a marking might be found on a rifle. This is no book for a beginner looking for information on his rifle, but might assist a serious collector seeking marginal data.

Poorly laid out and lacking effective detail. You get what you pay for. I would recommend spending the $60 and getting the appropriate manual with complete detail, including production quantities/ codes and waffenampt correlation. Unless you are looking for a chinese or syrian K98, this manual is only slightly helpful. There are websites on the internet that you could print and make a better pocket guide if you were going to show.

This book has great details and numerous Mauser markings. The information on the various countries and their corresponding marks is very informative and a tremendous help in identifying where the various mauser parts were manufactured and when. Mausers are so varied and have such an interesting past that I recommend this book to anyone interested in the Mauser rifle or just in military history.
