Book Description

March 1, 2008
When the three-hundred-year-old village cemetery at Newbury, Connecticut is invaded by a gaudy, half-million-dollar mausoleum, Ben Abbott is not happy. Newcomer Brian Grose s tall, mirror-polished monument of eternal ego sticks out in the peaceful burial ground and has been nicknamed McTomb by the locals. But no one expected to find Grose s body locked in his mausoleum fifty years ahead of schedule.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Social worker and horse enthusiast Richards adopts a malnourished, mistreated mare and her foal, an act that changes Richards’ life in many ways. Despite mistreatment, the former racehorse is trusting and affectionate, and caring for the horse and her foal teaches Richards the value of courage and unconditional love. Raver reads this memoir in a conversational style. She uses somewhat wary and cynical tones to represent Richards; these tones seem especially humorous when Richards is interacting with a potential suitor. Raver sounds more anguished and bewildered during confrontations concerning the horses’ medical problems. Raver’s voice seems older than the author’s; this is a minor quibble in an otherwise poignant reading. A sure bet for animal lovers. --Kaite Mediatore Stover --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

Review

"An inspirational story of what family means and what the loss of one can do to us--and for us." --Boston Globe --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.
