Surprisingly good and reliable thermometer,
By Andrey (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Maverick Electronic Thermometer and Timer (Kitchen)
I was a little worried about getting this because it looked too nice (like a PDA), was inexpensive, and had no reviews to back it up.But the thermometer itself has worked great, is very accurate and quick to come to the right temperature (as good as my instant). I have regularly used it for the oven, in the grill, and on the rangetop w/o any problems. The extra features on this unit are great as well. All the saved temperature settings for various types of meat are correct, and the pre-alert lets you take it out to rest before reaching the final temperature. There is also an extra setting which I used to program in the temperature for fish. All in all, I highly recommend this unit, especially for the price.

Rubbish, absolutely Rubbish,

Wish I could give this item 0 stars, I guess one star will have to do.I have had three of these, one maverick, one William Sonoma, one polder, all the same exact make/model, just different branding. Two were gifts, one I bought and returned. I have replaced the probe twice on each - guess I didn't learn my lesson fast enough. I should clarify the display device works like a charm - timer function is great, and probe works as long as it doesn't need to be in the oven, grill, smoker or other hot environment (for e.g. it can be used to have an alarm go off when your water is about to boil). But in general the metal probe is complete rubbish, it does not stand the test of time or a 350 deg F oven. The insulating material around the thermocouple consistenly fails prematurely. I bought these because I saw Alton Brown (Good Eats) use a similar model - this was a bad idea - I have been dissappointed time and time again with this item. Please do not buy this item, unless you plan on purchasing a probe that can withstand the temperatures w/in your oven/grill (See Grainger for a probe that can w/stand at least 600Deg F)

Top Notch Thermometer,

All you could want in a probe thermometer. The probe responds almost instantly to temperature change and is more accurate than any of the other probe thermometers I've tried. Timer includes seconds, which pricier pyrex and polder models do not. Timer can count down or count up as you are cooking, and will continue counting after you remove food from the oven to rest. I've also used it many times in the grill with no problem.

Watch How You Use This Item! KEEP THE MANUAL!!,

I purchased this thermometer even though some people had left negative feedback about it. This model was attractive to me because it was reasonably priced, had a slim design, LARGE LCD screen with easy to read numbers, AND was advertised FOR USE ON THE GRILL!! Well, take my advice and watch out! I've used this item TWICE on the grill since I bought it 80 days ago, and it's already broken! Immediately upon plugging the meat thermometer into the device an alarm goes off and won't stop reading "overdone". This is before I even put it into the meat. I called the customer service phone number in the manual, and the rep said if I've cleaned it properly after each use (which I had) the only possible explanation for the operational failure is that the probe got too hot and is broken. She offered to send out another probe at no cost to me, but also said this thermometer WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE USED ON THE GRILL! Even though the model's temperature capacity was advertised to read up to 500 degrees. She said this was only approved for oven use, and I should consider buying one of their more expensive models to use on the grill. I have yet to try and use it in the oven, so I can't tell you how it works. I will say that it is VERY convenient and functional as a timer and stopwatch for baking and household activities. Bottom line - I'm sorry I bought it!

Works well until it breaks,

I loved this thermometer for the first four times I used it. It let me accurately cooked all the food I used it on. But after four uses, it broke. The display unit works fine, but the temperature probe is broken -- after some research, I found out that it won't resist temperatures over about 200 degrees -- and my grill will get hotter than that. Oh well, I guess you get what you pay for!

Extremely poor manufacturing - don't buy!,

Too bad I can't give this zero stars. Buy this worthless product at your own risk! Count me among those who are VERY dissatisfied with both the product and the company.I was given this meat thermometer as a gift last Christmas. The probe destroyed itself the THIRD time I used it so that the readout on the base unit continuously displayed "HI" whenever the power was turned on (meaning it is sensing a higher oven temperature than it recommends for the type of meat you selected on the base unit). For those who are thinking "Well, he must have had the probe lead too close to the heating element, or bent it, or did something else stupid," I was very careful not to bend the lead or route it too close to the heating element. As others have noted, the insulating material around the probe wires is entirely inadequate to protect the wires from normal oven temperatures. I never had my oven higher than 350 degrees, but you could clearly see the spot on the probe cable where the wires got fried from the heat, and it wasn't anywhere near the oven's heating elements. I have been on the Maverick company's waiting list for a new probe for three months, and now they're telling me it'll be at least another month before they get any more probes in. What a worthless piece of crap. I've never before heard of a meat thermometer with a probe so poorly constructed that it self-destructs in the environment it's supposed to be used in and is in such short supply that it's nearly non-replaceable.

Nice but fragile probes,

Like many other users, the meat thermometer works great. I love the unit except that the probes burn out when used in the intended fashion--namely in a BBQ. I have gone through 4 of these probes within a year. I finally called the mfr (Maverick), and all they could offer me was advice to wrap the wire in aluminum foil to protect the wire against the heat. I will try this one more time, but Maverick's advice is tacit acknowledgment that their probes are not properly designed for their intended environment...

Disappointed,

Bought to use with our gas grill, so could monitor meat doneness without lifting grill lid and losing cooking temperature. Worked fine 1st few times. But then alarm registered well done even before probe inserted in meat!! Returned it and got a replacement. After a few uses same problem with the new unit. The idea is great, but the device stops working after only a few uses.

Great!,

I love this thermometer. Almost instantly comes up to temperature when probing something. Very easy to operate and even lets you custom enter in a temperature. I've only used in the oven and it has never failed, I've used other thermometers with no good luck. This one always "reads" the meat perfectly. I wouldn't consider using it on a gas grill, it didn't say anywhere in the instructions that you could and I assume it would be way to hot for the thermometer. For the oven it's excellent and you won't be disappointed.

Probe doesn't last long at all,

I bought this in December 07 and it worked just great, you can manually adjust the "done" temperature which I did for a turkey at christmas, and it was PERFECT, unfortunately I have only gotten about 6 uses out of it and the probe died. The unit gives me the "HIGH" alarm as soon as I plug it. This began on its 4th use and I found that if I moved the wire at the probe I could eventually get it to work and I was able to get 2 more uses out of it. Mind you, I have never submerged the probe to wash it, I cleaned it with a damp sponge, NEVER pulled on the probe wire, never exposed it to temps above 400F and never used it in a barbeque. After reading the reviews here, I thought that handling it with "kid gloves" would make it last, I was wrong. The unit should come with several probes to at least get you through enough uses to where you can say "well, I guess I got my money's worth out of it.
