FASCINATING MAN / WRITER, June 24, 2010
This review is from: Maverick Heart: Further Adventures Of Zane Grey (Paperback)
Zane Grey (1872-1939) was a larger-than-life character that could be the actual protagonist in any of his books. He would have been more famous, or gained celebrity status, if he had decided to be more public. But he loved the Old West, baseball, dentistry, fishing, essays, story-telling, etc. and thrived on his own quiet style of living. He had a very loyal wife, Dolly, and three children, but he was on the road most of his life. He was a womanizer and usually had a lady companion, or two, with him on his travels and adventures. This book is a continuing evaluation of this great writer by the author, the first being "Zane Grey: Romancing the West." I particularly enjoyed his fishing stories and living the good life on Catalina Island.

The Woman Behind the Man, February 25, 2012
Maverick Heart: the Further Adventures of Zane Grey, may be the title and the book does give the reader a fuller understanding of the man and what drove him to write the books he did write. But there is one chapter in this book which really needs to be emphsized--chapter 4, My Dear Dolly--for without Dolly Grey, Zane Grey would not have been the great writer he was, nor survived the Great Depression of the 30's. It was Dolly's editing and polishing of manuscripts that the editors of the magazines saw; it was Dolly's steady hand at the helm of the writing empire known as Zane Grey, Inc. which kept them afloat and kept the Zane Grey name in the public's eye. Yes, Zane Grey wrote the books, but Dolly made sure they continued to be of the calliber and stature of the earlier ones; she's the one who offered encouragement, advice as to literary style, for Zane to try new ideas and new ways of telling the story. This book needs to be read for this informative material if for nothing else. Stephen May has spent many, many hours going through documents and information and books about Zane Grey and this work is testament to his admiration and care about Zane Grey and the legacy of material he has left us. I can't recommend it any higher than to say, BUY it.
