5.0 out of 5 stars Was the book fact or fiction
As for the persons that gave the book one star I bet they never have been to Vietnam or met Denny in person. I have a autographed copy of Maverick because I use to know Denny as we were in the same area in Vietnam and again met him in 1996 at his work. To think the book is fiction is to not know Denny or much about Vietnam. I have read 99% of the books written about...

1.0 out of 5 stars Is this for real
Not knowing the author personaly, I question his authenticity. It would seem to indicate that he is a self made hero. This man has claimed to have been a POW which is not true. This makes me question the truthfullness of the book and wonder if it shouldn't be in the Fiction section.

I have read 99% of the books written about Vietnam and Maverick rates in the top 2% of the books on Vietnam that I have read. If you knew Denny you would know that everything in the book is true as he is not the type person to add fiction just to make a story more interesting. Heck there was no need to add un-truths as there was plenty of truths to fill several books! As the note Denny wrote in my copy of Maverick says... "This book was written so no one would forget"
"You were there no excuses needed"

5.0 out of 5 stars excellant portrayal of true, American spirit., August 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Maverick (Paperback)
During the story I'd find myself wondering when Mavericks luck would run out. Being a Vietnam vet, I too, could feel perhaps what was going through the mind of this heroic brave young American. I could feel my heart break as the writer explained of the buddies lost and are now names on a wall in DC. It is a story that touched my heart and most of all reminded me of the sacrifices made by our young men in the Vietnam War.A story that proves to all, the Vietnam Vet fought with honor and was as brave and courageous as any warrior before him. A story that tells of our human instinct to survive. As in the Vietnam War--this story hit all the emotions and touched all my senses---to understand more about the Vietnam War, a must read. Phil Ferrazano--wounded combat veteran--Vietnam, 9th Inf. Div.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maverick, April 16, 2005
This review is from: Maverick (Paperback)
Excellent read. Dennis' logbook is now closed, we're gonna miss you. The section about Dennis realizing the Cobra could not rescue troops on the ground, and his ingenious solution. Drop the ammo bay doors down. Pulling guys out of a bad situation, great job! After the XO dressed him down, sure would like to have seen the XO after the rescue. Once again, Great Job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stimulating!, August 26, 1998

My love for helicopters, and more recently the Vietnam war, caused me to pick up "Maverick"... The writing runs the gamut on emotions...using a great sense of humor where appropriate. A definite must read especially those able to appreciate good writing style.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Great story, May 22, 2000
This review is from: Maverick (Paperback)
One of the greatest story's I have read in a long time. I laughed with him, and cried with him. By the end of the book I felt like I knew him personally, and if I saw him on the street I would say "Hi" as if we were old fiends and talk a while. side note: whoever gave the one star rating there... I think you may want to check the black wall for Tyrone Hysey, its there.

5.0 out of 5 stars A VERY good read, January 10, 2010

This is a really good read.

The writing style is unique, loose and descriptive,...it draws you right in.
I can't remember being so emotionally dragged around by a story,...there were times I could'nt put the book down, times I fell out of my chair laughing.

And when I say story I mean to acknowledge that I certainly don't think this could have possibly happened to just one guy.

In my opinion this could have made for a very entertaining movie script.

I can give no further compliment than to say that despite thoroughly enjoying the read, THIS book had a big and profound effect on how I personally write.

Cheers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Harrowing Look At What It Was Like As A Cobra Pilot In Viet Nam, December 14, 2008
This review is from: Maverick (Hardcover)
Dennis Marvicsin flew Huey and Cobra helicopters during two tours of Viet Nam. Maverick is a brash look at the then Lieutenant's experiences during his time in country.

For some, Marvicsin and Greenfield's writing style is over the top, even cocky or bragging. But talk to anyone who flew in Nam, or depended on those who flew and they'll tell you the big brass ones were definitely earned and that is no less true for Marvicsin.

There is also the controversy that Marvicsin describes the incident of his capture and brief period in a tiger cage before he escapes his captives. Unfortunately, he uses the term POW, which is what he was. But his capture was brief enough, that he was never "declared" an "official" POW. This has caused some to discount his whole story. I think this is unfortunate and uncalled for as the man truly was one of the heros of those who flew in Viet Nam. A very close friend of mine was one of the original black ops Rambos, that the movies were based on. He was dropped behind enemy lines, would sneak into villages, accomplish his mission and then have to make his way back to a base, all with a hand gun, a knife and a few other small weapons. There are to this day no record of any of his missions. Does this make him and the other brave men he worked with liars? Of course not.

I highly recommend Maverick as a Viet Nam helicopter pilot's account, even with it's brash, in your face writing style and controversial use of the term POW. A very good read!

For my connection to flying helicopters, read my review for Robert Mason's Chickenhawk, still the best in it's genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine example of the genre, August 2, 2001
By
Anita C. Bryant (Moore Haven, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Maverick (Hardcover)
This book was recommended to me by a friend who served with Marvicsin. I read every book (fact and fiction) I can get my hands on concerning VietNam. This now rates as the finest I've read so far. The jargon is a reflection of the time, the war and the age of Maverick during his experience. The expressions he uses in a pinch are hilarious. He moves us through his military experience from young and dumb to the jaded thinking many vets developed in a war that nearly destroyed this country and did destroy many a good soldier in its wake. Also read-"We Were Soldiers Once...and Young" "Easy Target" and for novels on the subject, Colonel Leonard Scott wrote some fine ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Intense Emotional Rollercoaster!!!!, June 6, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Maverick (Paperback)
I had to read this book for an assignment and after I had finished I knew I had to have it for my own!! It is such an intense emotional rollercoaster with it being dark one moment and then adding in some "Mash" style humor the next. Marvicsin brings the charatcters and the war to life, drawing you in and making you live and suffer with them!! It is just wonderful and a must read for all
