4.0 out of 5 stars Trusty Thermometer -- kinda cheeky
This thermometer has been very accurate for the wide variety of uses to which I've subjected it so far. This includes not only meats (we're talking steak, hotdogs, salmon, chicken, any kind of meat) but leftovers I microwaved (curiosity) water for proofing yeast (I never followed that part of the recipe before) and even bathwater (again, curiosity.)

2.0 out of 5 stars Large probe
This device is massive compared to most digital thermometers. The copper tip is as long as a steak is thick. You can't possibly use this for anything small. It will work for a roast, but not everyday things.

I gave this thermometer 4 stars instead of 5 because it is very sensitive. Or maybe it is afraid of the dark. You see, I keep it in a drawer. It really, *really* seems to like being used because every time I open that drawer something bumps against it and I hear the little chirp of my thermometer turning on.

Also, one time I heard a very quiet high-pitched sound and it was the thermometer which was on. I had trouble figuring it out at first, but the sound was so persistent that I finally figured it out. So now I am paranoid when I open the drawer and hear the chirp, that it will stay on and make that noise again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maverick RediCheck Pro Thermometer, July 29, 2007

I love this thermometer! The neatest part about it is that you can watch it go from rare to medium to well done. It is very accurate. I had a Maverick thermometer before and loved it, but my husband put it in the sink in dishwater. DO NOT PUT THIS THERMOMETER IN WATER! The thermometer I had before was a small one, but this is a nice size. You can check a single burger or a chicken breast on a George Foreman Grill, plus you can check a roast in the oven or a pork chop on the grill. In this day and age where meat needs to be done, what a wonderful cooking tool to have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick & Accurate, April 18, 2009

I got this instant-read thermometer primarily to check internal temp of artisinal breads, but it soon replaced my meat thermometer. It is so quick and, in side-by-side test with my trusty old dial thermometer, it was very accurate. My only issue with it is that it sometimes - not always - wants to read the room temperature for an extended time. That means that I have to remove the battery when storing it in order to save battery life. Minor inconvenience, but it would rate five stars otherwise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for non-liquids, April 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Maverick Redi-Check Pro LCD Food Probe Thermometer (Kitchen)
This thermometer is very large and easy to handle (32 cm / 1' 0-1/2" long) and its large display (both done-ness and actual temperature) is easy to read, making it ideal for oven, BBQ or stove-top use. It works perfectly for measuring the internal temperature of meats, breads and other non-liquid items as they cook.

The upper part of the thermometer is obviously not waterproof (which I did not need to be told) but the description does not point out the fact that the probe must not be used to measure the temperature of liquids. It cannot, therefore, be used for the many liquid temperature applications I had planned. This limitation should have been stated clearly in the description.

4 stars overall: 5 stars for the specific uses I have stated, 3 stars for "liquid incompatibility" and the five second wait time (for the display to register the temperature) which seems somewhat lengthy, given today's technology - no doubt because if the heft of the probe.

2.0 out of 5 stars Maverick Pro Thermometer - Lukewarm, May 12, 2008

Much larger than picture led me to believe, a bit bulky. Tip is too large to be fast responding. Meat is consistently overcooked.

Great product for the price, everyone should have one in the house. Great for fish, pork, steak and chicken. This was a replacment for an older unit.

I really like the Maverick Redi-Check Pro. My meats have turned out perfect, from steaks to chicken breasts to pork chops and from medium rare to well, well done. It is bigger than I thought it was when I ordered it, but it is quite manageable. I have no regrets in purchasing this item.

5.0 out of 5 stars Registers Quick, Great Alternative to Thermoworks Pen, September 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Maverick Redi-Check Pro LCD Food Probe Thermometer (Kitchen)
This is a super-affordable alternative to the Thermoworks unit. It registers an initial reading quick and stabilizes in about 2-3 seconds. Don't waste your money on anything else, unless you have the money to drop on a Thermoworks device (they are pretty great, but super pricey). This is the "affordable" or "economical" alternative recommended by Cook's Illustrated / America's Test Kitchen.

A good thermometer is an essential tool for cooking and baking breads. It is one of those tools you may not know how much you needed until you actually have one.

These work well, for the price. They aren't as 'instant' as you would think, but for the average home baker, or cook, an excellent entry level, day to day usage, thermometer.

My mom even put this in a sink full of dishwater for some reason, and I took it apart, and dried it out, and it kept working.

Recommended.
