5.0 out of 5 stars COULDN'T TAKE IT OUT OF THE PLAYER!, December 25, 2003

"handsomestrangeraw2" (Ashland, VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Maverick - The Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I grew up on country music. my family liked it but I didn't.I was just there as the songs played but they did not appeal to my heart. Now days I do appreciate them more than I would ever admit to my brothers. So I groaned when I heard the first song since I am not an active country music listener. I thought the second song was a dog too. Then the theme song to the old tv show came on and I liked that. The last two songs are what are so addictive. Randy Newman's original "Ride Gambler Ride" is superb and the classic gospel "Amazing Grace" is more than wonderful.I listened so much and played it for three weeks solid in my truck. There is not a bad song on the CD.This is a very slick presentation, a well thought out CD and a compendium of the Western spirit in the 19th century.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid collection of mid -90's country, October 8, 2003
This review is from: Maverick - The Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Most movie soundtracks consisting of individual cuts by a range of artists tend to leave me cold but "Music from and Inspired by"
this Mel Gibson movie is an exception. For one thing there is a thematic unity with several songs having a distinctly Western -as in cowboy-slant.The album brings together a range of popular country artists from the mid nineties and well nigh all are on prime form.
Vince Gill cuts a fine version of the Band classic Ophelia which reminds us of his country rock roots as a member of Pure Prairie League ;the pairing of the great Radney Foster and the sublime Patty Loveless makes Rainbow Down the Road a paragon of aching loveliness while Hal Ketchum's song Solitary Traveller is so redolent of the wide open spaces and the call of the far horizon it sounds like a traditional ballad rather than the self penned wprk that it is.
Fine cuts from Carlene Carter ,Tracy Lawrence ,the great Waylon Jennings and Confederate Railroad among others sustain the high level of quality while the version of Amazing Grace by the Maverick Choir restores a quality to the song often lacking -joy.Taken at a brisk tempo it should bring a smile to most faces and cause even hardened atheists to think again

Good album especially for countyry music lovers

5.0 out of 5 stars What a jam!, July 25, 2001
This review is from: Maverick - The Soundtrack (Audio CD)
While I'm normally not a huge country fan, I enjoyed this album greatly. The songs had, for the most part, a Southern-rock feel, rather than a warbly cowboy tone. The version of "Amazing Grace," done as a jam session with a huge group of famous musicians, was worth the price of the tape alone! :c)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack to own, January 8, 2000

This review is from: Maverick - The Soundtrack (Audio CD)
It is one of the best soundtrcks I have ever heard that contained country music, its a shame that there aren't many soundtracks with country music even in them. All the songs are excellent examples of the artist's style. The only reason that it didnt get five stars is because it isn't really upbeat.
