Book Description

November 22, 2011

Don’t conform to Wall Street’s rules. Be your own trader—Maverick style.

PROVEN STRATEGIES FOR GENERATING GREATER PRO FITS FROM THE AWARD-WINNING TEAM AT MAVERICK TRADING

Wall Street’s dirty secret is out—you don’t need a professional to manage your money, and you can beat the market on a consistent basis. All that’s required are three things: personal dedication, a sound risk management strategy, and the trading system outlined in this book. Yes, it’s that simple.

As active traders at the private proprietary trading firm Maverick Trading, the authors have taught hundreds of budding traders how to end their relationship with the so-called professionals and trade on their own, using the same system the firm used to generate gains of more than 100% in 2008, 50% in 2009, and 50% in 2010. It’s not a get-rich-quick scheme.

It’s a long-term methodology designed to create steady wealth you can live on, retire on, and pass down to the next generation. Maverick Trading teaches you how to:

  • Design a portfolio using long and short options
  • Read OHLC and Candlestick charts
  • Hedge your investments with options
  • Create a risk-assessment tool kit
  • Mentally prepare yourself for the life of a trader

It’s not complicated. In the authors’ own words, “The system in this book relies on pattern recognition, impeccable risk management, understanding yourself, and fifth-grade math.”

The hard part is up to you. You have to make the decision to go all in. Full-time. No turning back. Once you do it, you’ll wonder what took you so long. Let Maverick Trading put you on the path to the life you were supposed to lead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Readable and valuable December 20, 2011
Format:Hardcover
This book was written for a specific purpose, to explain the system that Maverick Trading uses to pick stocks and to both recruit and train potential stock pickers. However, it has a considerably wider application, and it is a pleasure to read.

The book is almost startlingly readable. Most books about finance are at best opaque and at worst nearly unintelligible. I think this is due at least in part to the attitude that many finance types have that they are part of a mysterious order of experts whose knowledge is beyond the ken of mere mortals. This book's authors avoid that failing entirely, and that's as rare as it is refreshing.

The trading concepts the authors outline have a common sense ring-of-truth about them. I wouldn't call them simple, but they are certainly logical. The overall "philosophy" of their trading mindset is indeed simple: If one understands the way to pick stocks with a high likelihood of producing a good result, and if one applies that method with precision, and if one develops a clear understanding of how to limit one's losses, and if one can resist the psychological pressures that overwhelm many traders, then one is likely to make money. Maybe lots of it. Hey, no problem...

Of course, there is a problem, the psychological traps that stock traders can so easily fall into. The book spends considerable time dealing with those traps. That's because it's clear that various internally and externally generated biases and pressures can deflect even the most well-intentioned trader who is implementing even the most carefully conceived system of picking stocks. Those same pressures can and probably will demolish most casual traders.

It seems that the role of small, casual investors is to get grabbed by the ankles and shaken until all of the money in their pockets falls out and can be gathered up by those who know what they're doing. This book was written by people who actually do that grabbing and shaking. That's not a critical comment at all. Stock trading is a game in the broad academic sense of "game," and anyone who plays it had better be willing and able to do what it takes to win that game.

Bottom line: I thought the book was very well done, and I enjoyed reading it. I have no plans to become a professional (or even a skilled amateur) trader, so I won't be making an application on Maverick Trading's well done website. None the less, I thought the book amply rewarded the time I spent reading it, and I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected February 13, 2012
Format:Hardcover
When I first heard the title of this book, Maverick Trading, I thought what I was getting into was another "make money on the fringe" or "who needs stock charts when you have tarot cards" type of "out there" book. (That may be because I recently finished two books in this ilk, The Inner Voice of Trading: Eliminate the Noise, and Profit from the Strategies That Are Right for You and Trend Commandments: Trading for Exceptional Returns, and Maverick Trading seemed to suggest something a little "wild".) But actually, Maverick is the name of an investing company and their strategies and theories are decidedly mainstream and practical. One might even call them "refreshing".

The book starts with basic explanations of how markets move, then discusses stock charts and how to get useful information on market movement. From there, the reader is quickly introduced to the nuts and bolts of how markets move, along with the intricacies of analyzing stock positions and behind the scenes movements in prices, sectors, and industries. I suppose more sophisticated traders than myself might find some of what Maverick is about to be basic or maybe even trite, but I'm not ashamed to admit, I for one, who have been investing in stocks for 26 years, never really considered the possibility that people with large amounts of money may want to sell a hot stock or buy a cold one, simply because they have to get in or out of a position that is weighing on their company for the wrong reasons. And of course, I also never thought it might be possible to see when such large movements take place and what the real opportunity to buy or sell an equity might be. That is to say, there are other reasons why a stock might go up or down besides value compared to current price. Maverick teaches you how to get that information, how to analyze it, what to do with it, and when to act on it. That's the whole package. All of their strategies - they call them "tools" in your "toolbox" - are understandable, logical, rational, and eminently useable. They are probably safe, too, in the sense of what can be considered safe when investing in a volatile market like the equities market.

I like this book not only because of the information it contains, but because of its earthy, friendly, approachable tone. Some of their jokes are a little flat, and their analogies sometimes move from the ridiculous to the frivolous, and back again, but the points they are trying to make get illustrated and illustrated well. It makes learning the Maverick way a breeze and reading the book a pleasure. Yes, my copy of this book was provided so I could write a review, but this did not influence my opinion of this book in any way. In all seriousness, I can honestly say that if I had paid for this book, I still would have been a satisfied customer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Safe and sane in an insane market December 30, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Maverick Trading" lays out a rules-based approach to options that helps contain the forces of fear and greed that test a trader's psyche. It provides a top-down approach, from markets to sectors to individual stocks -- as well as a detailed introduction to reading charts -- to increase the odds of making successful trades. Position-sizing and other forms of risk management are also addressed, along with trading techniques and their mathematical underpinnings. Without being simplistic or overly optimistic, "Maverick Trading" is an engaging invitation to "get in the game".
