The Randy Newman Songbook Vol. 2

While pondering whether to record a second volume of the Randy Newman Songbook, the two-time Academy Award-winning songwriter—honored most recently for “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3—claims he took a practical, Hollywood movie-studio view of the situation: “The first one did so well that nowadays you might as well just ... 5.0 out of 5 stars COULDN'T TAKE IT OUT OF THE PLAYER! December 25, 2003
Format:Audio CD
I grew up on country music. my family liked it but I didn't.I was just there as the songs played but they did not appeal to my heart. Now days I do appreciate them more than I would ever admit to my brothers. So I groaned when I heard the first song since I am not an active country music listener. I thought the second song was a dog too. Then the theme song to the old tv show came on and I liked that. The last two songs are what are so addictive. Randy Newman's original "Ride Gambler Ride" is superb and the classic gospel "Amazing Grace" is more than wonderful.I listened so much and played it for three weeks solid in my truck. There is not a bad song on the CD.This is a very slick presentation, a well thought out CD and a compendium of the Western spirit in the 19th century.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid collection of mid -90's country October 8, 2003
Format:Audio CD
Most movie soundtracks consisting of individual cuts by a range of artists tend to leave me cold but "Music from and Inspired by"
this Mel Gibson movie is an exception. For one thing there is a thematic unity with several songs having a distinctly Western -as in cowboy-slant.The album brings together a range of popular country artists from the mid nineties and well nigh all are on prime form.
Vince Gill cuts a fine version of the Band classic Ophelia which reminds us of his country rock roots as a member of Pure Prairie League ;the pairing of the great Radney Foster and the sublime Patty Loveless makes Rainbow Down the Road a paragon of aching loveliness while Hal Ketchum's song Solitary Traveller is so redolent of the wide open spaces and the call of the far horizon it sounds like a traditional ballad rather than the self penned wprk that it is.
Fine cuts from Carlene Carter ,Tracy Lawrence ,the great Waylon Jennings and Confederate Railroad among others sustain the high level of quality while the version of Amazing Grace by the Maverick Choir restores a quality to the song often lacking -joy.Taken at a brisk tempo it should bring a smile to most faces and cause even hardened atheists to think again
Good album especially for countyry music lovers

5.0 out of 5 stars What a jam! July 25, 2001
Format:Audio CD
While I'm normally not a huge country fan, I enjoyed this album greatly. The songs had, for the most part, a Southern-rock feel, rather than a warbly cowboy tone. The version of "Amazing Grace," done as a jam session with a huge group of famous musicians, was worth the price of the tape alone! :c)

1.0 out of 5 stars "Soundtrack" is a misleading descriptor for this CD August 3, 2013
By Shay R
Format:Audio CD
I picked up this CD at a flea market, without reading any reviews or knowing anything about it ahead of time. I simply knew that I like this movie and I like soundtracks, so thought I couldn't go too wrong. However, when I stuck it in the car CD player on the way home from the store, track after track were simply country songs, and none of them sounded even familiar from the movie! This evening I re-watched the movie to try to determine where this missing music belonged, and the answer was, most of it did not.

About 5 seconds is played of "Renegades, Rebels, and Rogues" and of "You Don't Mess Around With Me" in the movie, and about 1 minute of "A Good Run of Bad Luck" (during the big poker game, but not even distinctively enough for it to have been memorable). The cast sings a teeny bit of "Amazing Grace" at one point; the CD version of that song is played at the beginning of the credits; and "Ride Gambler Ride" is played at the end of the credits. And these 5 songs are the sum total of ALL songs that are even credited in the movie credits, so I don't think I missed any of the others (and I was really listening for them). So, aside from what was played during the credits, only about 1 min 10 sec of this "soundtrack" actually appears on the film (1 min 15, if you count the cast rendition of "Amazing Grace" as well). Even if I generously round up my estimates to a full 2 minutes, it must be agreed that this CD is definitely not a good representation of what's actually heard during the course of the movie.

The VAST majority of the movie is accompanied with instrumental scores, which I quite enjoyed, and had expected to find at least some of on the CD--alas, the CD does not have even ONE score track. A thorough disappointment, and a thorough shame!

3.0 out of 5 stars pretty good soundtrack June 19, 2014
Format:Audio CD
This is a pretty good soundtrack. I actually like the soundtrack better then the movie. It has hits by artists that were in the movie like Renegades Rebels And Rogues by Tracy Lawrence and A Good Run Of bad Luck by Clint Black. Vince Gill, Patty Loveless, Waylon Jennings and Kathy Kattea were all in the movie also. And on Amazing Grace it has artists like Suzy Bogguss and Reba McEntire among others that weren't in the movie. This is a pretty good cd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Maverick soundtrack cd July 6, 2013

This has a lot of "fun" country songs all together from many different singers. It's a cd that will pick-up your mood.
