Product Description

Color: Grey

Maverick ET732 is a long range BBQ smoker meat thermometer that allows you to monitor meat's internal temperature while being 300 feet away. It includes a wireless receiver featuring an LCD display as one of its main components. With this compact thermometer, you can stay relaxed & relieved of monitoring the meat temperature again & again. Simply install the thermometer and program the temperature you want to set. You will get an alert from the receiver whenever the meat temperature goes above or falls below your pre-programmed temperature.

Even if you want to use it at night, forget having a hard time as it receiver's LCD features backlight that simplifies the task. Its receiver also has a built in stand and belt clip that allow you to place it easily. While receiver has an in-built stand, the transmitter comes with a removable wire stand that also serves as a hanger depending on the requirements. You can inert the heat resistant food probe wire into the meat to a depth of 6". Heat resistance of both probe wires is 716 degree Fahrenheit. In case the transmitter is beyond the reachable range or has no more access to the radio frequency signal, there is another alert for that as well.

I use this every time I grill, roast or smoke meat, although it is most useful in the smoker. After many years using my outdoor gas grill, I know there are some areas that are hotter then others. The charcoal grill can obviously change every time. It is nice to know the exact ambient temperature in both of these, but knowing your grill and technique are more important. However, in a smoker, this is absolutely essential data. The ability to monitor the ambient as well as the meat temperature has changed my life. Well, maybe not changed my life, but my smoked meats come out awesome now, every single time. I no longer have to open the smoker to take the meat temperature, and I can keep the heat right where it needs to be.

The display on the transmitter seems to be real time, but the receiver updates every 15 seconds. More than once I have failed to turn off either the transmitter or receiver after use because it is not an on off switch, but a very long press and hold of power buttons, (fortunately, battery life is good and I use it frequently, so this hasn't been much of a problem).

Mostly pros, but I do have a few cons. The receiver MUST be turned on before the transmitter. This wasn't in the directions, but easily discovered through trial an error. Setting the alarms for min/max grill and meat temperature are cumbersome. I have given up on using the alarms completely and just pay attention to the receiver, I would also like the probe cables to be a bit longer. Another 12 inches would be awesome. As they are, the transmitter ends up getting pretty warm because of proximity to the heat. No problems here yet, just a concern. One last concern that has not been a problem yet. When I wash the meat probe I am careful to not submerge it in water.

Anybody who want to cook 'low and slow' should consider buying this thermometer. I thought I had a pretty accurate dial thermometer in the lid of my (pretty darn high end expensive) propane grill. Turns out, it is at least 40 degrees off and not nearly as rapid at detecting fluctuations in temperature, especially at the grid, where the meat is. Using this setup, I can easily see the temperature at the grid, as well as the internal temperature of the meat all without ever opening the cover.
I've used it for slow cooking of baby back ribs and beef brisket, both without any trouble, and the results of slow cooking at the right temperature was unbelievable.
Anyone who does a lot of outdoor cooking and wants to make sure that the meat is at the right temperature, this is a must have. And for under 60 bucks you get to sit inside and read the temperature from a remote with a cold brew in the comfortable air conditioned area of choice.
So far I haven't had any bad experience with the setup and did follow some of the previous reviewers comments to jam in the probe plugs firmly to get the connection right, not a big deal. Also, as mentioned by other reviewers, the alarm setup can be a little bit of a fiddle the first time, but the description that came with it sets out how to operate and program the unit. I used both the BBQ temp warning and meat temp warning successfully.
I've been using it for a few weeks, so I cannot really comment on the longevity, but I can see this lasting me a long time.

Update Oct 2014: I have now used this regularly and for over a year. It still works like a charm, is still easy to clean and has yielded countless perfectly smoked pork shoulders, ribs and briskets. I would add a star if that was an option. If you're in doubt, buy one, you will not regret it!

Much better build quality than the Taylor probe I had that melted the probe wire at higher temperatures. Very accurate and the wireless remote works very well. Don't spend less money on some other inferior product, buy this unit, you will be happy you did.

Love the product. Has saved me tie and money by not messing up good meat. But! In my order the thermometer which gives the temp of the meat is wy off! It often reads the temp of the grill not in the meat. I avoided the bones, and followed the manufactures guidelines. I just got a lemon. Otherwise I would give it 5 stars.

I purchased this thermometer to help me gain consistency in my smoking. Previously, I had relied upon the metal dial thermometer included with the smoker and digital meat thermometer from a local big box store. This setup worked OK, but I thought I might be able to be more consistent with my results if I could accurately measure the temperature at the grate with a good digital unit. And the wireless feature would be welcomed as well.

This thermometer works as intended, and my results have become very consistent. So much so, that I bought one in black for my other smoker. This is where the problem was identified. The probes on the two thermometers do not match and sometimes measure as much as a 20 degree difference on the same heat source. Twenty degrees is a huge difference between two meat probes. I performed the boiling water test to identify which one is more accurate, and use that one. I will get around to buying another probe in the future to replace the faulty one.

Some other thoughts on cleaning the probes: never get them wet and clean them with nothing more than a damp paper towel. Do not get water into the junction between the wire and the metal probe itself.

The wireless feature of this thermometer is very useful and works well with excellent range. The grill thermometer is much more accurate than the metal one stuck in the lid of my smoker, and it has revealed that I have been smoking about 50 degrees too high at times.

I now stabilize my temperature, set a low temperature alarm at 200, a high temperature alarm at 275, and a meat done alarm appropriate for the meat I am smoking. I then put the receiver on my bedside table and go to bed. If anything goes wrong or the meat is done, the thermometer wakes me up and alerts me.

Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. I just wish the probes were more accurate and reliable.
