5.0 out of 5 stars Mavericks, Before it was the Cool Thing to Be...., January 12, 2009
This review is from: Mavericks (Audio CD)
As much as I love the DB's, this album (originally recorded nearly a decade after the two songwriters last worked together in that band) is a different beast. Gone are the herky-jerky new-waveisms of their early albums, and in are more organic sounding songs from two mature, talented songwriters both of whose names should be on all music fans' lips. From the rootsy, charming "Angels," to the chiming Beatle-esque "Geometry," to the stripped-down, wistful "She Was the One," these are some of the best songs either has ever written, and the relaxed vibe of the recording sessions is apparent in the effortless, simplicity and directness of these songs and arrangements. Recommended for fans of earthy, warm pop-rock like, say, Tom Petty's "Wildflowers," Michael Penn's best work, or the songs of Alejandro Escovedo. But basically, anyone who loves a great pop song will love this album, because it's chock full of 'em.

Ever since I found a copy of this album in the mid-nineties in the clearance bin of my local reputable record store (a crime!) I have been anxiously awaiting another installment from the Holsapple-Stamey hitmaking duo. I guess the next best thing is this re-issue with some bonus tracks, including demos, b-sides and remixes, and I'll happily take it.

Not a stinker in the bunch. Mature songwriters, indeed. "She Was The One" is one of my all-time favorite songs. Buy it! You will not regret it...

5.0 out of 5 stars A perennial favorite, September 8, 2010

Love this album. Stellar songwriting, heartfelt performances. The co-founders of the dB's create the sonic equivalent of a romantic dramedy, inserting elements of heartbreak, humor, and hope in finely-crafted guitar pop/rock. Timeless.

Fine record. It was originally released in 1991, not in 2007. The record is nearly 20 years old.
