5.0 out of 5 stars I DON'T KNOW HOW A CONCERT DVD CAN BE BETTER THAN THIS
THE MAVERICKS - LIVE IN AUSTIN, TEXAS is a fabulous concert DVD. I own only one other such DVD: the BeeGee's ONE NIGHT ONLY. It is an awesome DVD, too, but I couldn't tell you which I like better; they are just different. I had never seen the Mavericks before but I'm now a huge fan. 1.0 out of 5 stars Did NOT like it
I saw the Mavericks in San Diego back in the mid nineties and they put on a truly great show, fantastic musicians with a great singer. However I did not like this performance, some numbers had a too brassy sound and the guitar work was NOT the nice deep guitar sound of old. It seemed more like a solo Raul Malo performance with NEW musicians, NOT the Mavericks that I was...

The lead singer of the Mavericks, Raul Malo, has a super voice and is a charismatic performer. His singing style has been compared to Roy Orbison, a comparison which has some merit, and there are strains of an Irish tenor there somehow, too. This DVD has few flaws. Each song is a delight with some songs rising above others to be my favorites: DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY, I SAID I LOVE YOU, ALL YOU EVER DO IS BRING ME DOWN, SHINE YOUR LIGHT, HERE COMES THE RAIN and, maybe the best of them all, THE NIGHT THE BOTTLE LET ME DOWN. I'm not going to pretend that I know a lot about music but the arrangements all are very well done. On stage with the Mavericks is a quartet brass section that adds a lot to the mix. I have read that the Mavericks started out as a country band, but I think anyone would be hard pressed to label them such now. Rather they seem an amalgamation of different musical styles: part country, part tejano, part rock and part pop. Recorded in Austin at the famous Stubbs BBQ on June 2, 2004 in front of a youngish crowd of fans, THE MAVERICKS LIVE is not only an entertaining DVD to view but one also feels witness to a unique musical category being created. You can't go wrong with this one.

This is an EXCELLENT DVD. The concert is exceptional and is almost 3 hours long. The longer the concert goes, the better they get. They are great in concert and I can't wait until they come to Michigan!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Heaven!!!!!, January 21, 2006
This review is from: The Mavericks - Live in Austin, Texas (DVD)
This is a pure and awesome performance by one of the most versatile bands of all time. Front man, Raul Malo, has a musical gift like no one else I've ever heard before. This musical genius channels the likes of Roy Orbison, Elvis and Bruce Springsteen, while still delivering a sound that is uniquely his own. Raul Malo's voice is a pure caress as he sings "Fool #1". He effortlessly switches moods as he performs "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down" and "I Said I Love You" This is a must own for Maverick and Malo fans. The only thing better than owning this DVD is seeing Raul Malo live. If you get the chance people, DO IT. Saw him at Largo in LA last March, and he just blew me away. You will never be disappointed when Raul opens his mouth. Pure Heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD, June 7, 2005
By
This review is from: The Mavericks - Live in Austin, Texas (DVD)
Since there's only 2 reviews here, thought I'd through my 2 cents in... this DVD is great. I like many styles of music, and for this genre, this performance cooks! I've never really been a fan of the Mavericks... never bought any of their CDs. But I happened to catch part of this on HDTV and it was so smokin', I bought the DVD to see the rest. Raul has a great voice and stage presence, songs are great, arrangements are great, decently hot guitarist with great tone, audience is into it, sound is great, 16x9 anamorphic video. All way around, if you like anything resembling this style of music, you'll like this. One of the best live performance DVDs I've seen, period.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best live concert ever!!, June 13, 2006
This review is from: The Mavericks - Live in Austin, Texas (DVD)
Real fantastic live concert with a superb sound! It's like being
among the spectators. Although it's impossible to have all their
hits on this DVD, the selection of songs is just great and is a
mixture of all kinds of music sung by their leader Raul Malo
who has an incredible voice somewhere between Elvis and Roy Orbi-
son. This guy is also great as a solo artist - his CD's are all
out of sight - and on this concert he performs all kinds of
styles. From Rock & Roll (Elvis' "Love Me" interpretation is
already worth the purchase of this CD) to Blues, from Country
to Mexican folklore (Mariachi)and from Jazz to Gospel. The rest
of his band couldn't be better musicians. It's a full 2 hour
musical "orgy" that should please anyone who likes music in
general. Besides that, there are interviews with Raul and each
and every band member explaining their likes in music and why
they have become so popular all over. Classified as a C&W band
in the beginning, crossover group later on, nowadays they are
considered one of the top groups in music! Don't hesitate,
just buy it. It's the best musical DVD you can get on the market!

I am giving this 5 stars simply because there is no six star option. This DVD is fantastic, Raul is in superb voice and the rest of the band along with the brass section are out of this world. I, along with all the fans lucky enough to be there live, was so disappointed when it ended, just wanted it to go on forever. The last two tracks "Bottle let me down' and "All you ever do' are just amazing ................ go buy it, you will not regret it.
