1.0 out of 5 stars Crashes
I have bought two of Mavis Beacon software, and both of them crashes all the time. It is impossible to go from one level to the next one! Also, the manufactures don't offer fixes for these problems. Don't buy it!

Have fun improving your typing skills. I bought this software for mom, but I use it much more than she does. There are lots of typing exercises that hold your interest. And in case you need it, there is motivation to help keep you going.

The software determines your strengths and weaknesses, then presents exercies tailored to improving your speed and accuracy. And it handles multiple users on the same computer, too. Simply "sign-in" and it picks up where you left off. You can provide your own typing material or use the wealth of material already built-in. It can even schedule your practice sessions and remind you when it's time.

One annoyance for me was the background music playing as I typed. Fortunately there is an option to turn it OFF.

Do you look at the keyboard (your fingers) when you type? That's a habit this software will help you to break. Wish I had this software back when I learned to type. Years ago when I first started typing, I applied White-Out to every key on the keyboard so I didn't waste time looking at the keys!! This program can show you the keyboard on-screen to help break that habit.

Mavis Beacon asks your goal, then helps you achieve it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wanna learn how to type? The answer is here., September 28, 2000

I use this in my computer class at school. I went from about 25 wpm to 43 wpm. I definetely reccomend it if you are trying to get faster... and even if you dont want to get faster, the games are a blast! There's sound effects and everythings so high-tech! It really knows how to teach you how to type. It even has fingers and a keyboard on the screen so u can see what you're doing.

I have had nothing but trouble. Installation, program sound, no WEB tech support, some parts can not be uninstalled. It is a good Ideal--just spread too wide. I can run 98/95. Not NT. Trying to cover so much has reduced the performance. I thought I was buying just98/95. NT does not run on this old PC. I'm disappointed.

At 42 it seemed time to finally sit down and learn how to type properly. I've been seeing Mavis Beacon recommended for years (I first started using a PC in 82) so it was the natural place to start. I'm only part of the way through, but so far I'm dissappointed. The basic engine looks like it hasn't been updated in a decade, and the resolution of the letters is so poor that i,l and 1 are almost indistinguishable. There are a number of later add-ons, like games, but they come with no instructions or explanation. The encouraging messages are inconsistent (simultaneously telling me I'm doing great and that I need to start the lesson again). The program has also twice thrown me right back to the beginning of the first lesson (asdf...) without any way to override. Having said that, the basic program does its job, but I bet you can get an earlier version for a lot less money and not miss anything important
