Book Description

April 2008
Launched in 1936 in the "Sunday Post" in Scotland, The Broons are undoubtedly Scotland's first family - the Nation's favourites - with a readership covering all generations. The Broons 'annual' sells over 100,000 copies. This is a facsimile of Maw Broon's very own cookbook, which we borrowed from the sideboard at No. 10 Glebe Street - first made for her by her mother-in-law when 'Maw' married 'Paw', and added-to over the years with recipes for every day and special days, from friends and neighbours and others that simply caught Maw's eye in "The Sunday Post", or cut-out of the backof a flour bag. These are the very recipes that became the favourite dishes of the whole extended family - Maw and Paw, Granpaw, Daphne, Horace, Joe, Maggie, Hen, the Twins and 'the bairn'.The strip itself is still hugely popular, with the "Sunday Post" having a circulation of over 1,000,000 copies every week, and there are some examples of the strip from years gone by that Maw must have clipped into her Cookbook- perhaps as reminders of special days. We've just left the 'bits and pieces' that you find tucked into a cookbook, exactly as we found them - stains and all. "Maw Broon's Cookbook" is published at a time when nostalgia items are extremely popular, and although obviously firm favourites in Scotland, there will be interest nationwide, with support and endorsement from celebrity names - Gordon Ramsay, Lorraine Kelly, Ewan McGregor to name a few. The BBC's Robbie Shepherd and Tom Morton will lend a hand too! There will be promotion in DC Thomson's portfolio of newspapers and magazines - including "The Sunday Post", "The Courier", "The Scots Magazine", and "The People's Friend".

Editorial Reviews

Review

'Extremely clear and lovingly produced, a touching facsimile of exactly the kind of book a woman of Maw Broon's generation would turn to. I can recommend Maw Broon's Cookbook.' Anna Burnside, The Sunday Times October 28th 2007

5.0 out of 5 stars Maw Broon's cookbook, May 13, 2008
This review is from: Maw Broon's Cookbook (Hardcover)
Anyone who grew up in Scotland in the post-war era, or who has parents who grew up there during that time, should order this book immediately. It is brilliantly written and put together with affection and humor. It looks just like my mother's real cookbook, with cutout recipes, bits of advice, slivers of dried herbs and comments written in the margin by all and sundry. but it is the family cookbook of the Broons, that archetypal Scottish family, whose dinner table conversations were brought into our homes with the evening newspapers for decades, and whose comments on life, love, politics and post-war conditions fueled many a spirited conversation around our own dinner tables. But, in addition to bringing back all those memories of the whole funny family, including the twins and The Bairn, it is filled with real, authentic Scottish recipes, from tablet to Cullen Skink, from tattie scones to fish cakes, from victoria sponge to cloutie dumpling.
Order, read it and laugh, and then cook yourself and your family up some memorable, and memory-laden, dishes.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most entertaining cookbook I've seen!, October 21, 2008
By
This review is from: Maw Broon's Cookbook (Hardcover)
My parents both immigrated from Scotland and I inherited their "The Broons" and "Oor Wullie" books. I also cook for a living and have taught culinary classes for several schools. I am a HUGE cookbook fan, and in addition to having very fond memories of many of the dishes in this book, it is incredibly fun!

Many of my chef friends got a kick out of how it was designed. If you have any interest in traditional Scottish fare and the desire to interpret Scots' dialect, you'll love this book. There's nothing else like it on the market!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought as a gift, but almost didn't give it... it was that good!, December 9, 2009

I really enjoyed reading through this cookbook. I bought it as a gift for my mom whose Grandparents were from Scotland. Before giving it though, I just had to sit down and read it. My husband gave me such a hard time for "using" my mom's gift. My mom loves it, mostly just to read, but there are also a lot of good recipes.
