5.0 out of 5 stars Great story and illustrations, September 9, 2002

This review is from: Max and the Big Fat Lie: A Book About Telling the Truth (Building Christian Character) (Hardcover)
My children and I really like this book. I appreciate the realistic situation in which the little boy is tempted to lie. I think my children could really see something they relate to and they could see the moral of the story about how lies get out of hand. Great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars to tell the truth- Mother of 7 in Charlotte, NC, January 5, 2002

This review is from: Max and the Big Fat Lie: A Book About Telling the Truth (Building Christian Character) (Hardcover)
I purchased five of the Michael Waite, Building Christian Character books in August of 94. I was most impressed with Max and the Big Fat Lie,it was interesting, very humorous and to the point. I used these books for children chapel at church, it kept the children attention because it wasn't long and rattling, but fun and something they could relate to, and a scripture that was short enough for them to memorize. My next favorites are Casey the Greedy Young Cowboy and Handy Dandy Helpful Hal. Buzzle Billy and Boggin, Blizzy, and Sleeter the Cheater were written in a tongue twister type of rhyme. It had words the children didn't understand, older than 7 may appreciate these, but under that age group don't understand what a buzzle is. Overall they are fun and interesting and have a great message!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, exciting, awesome, April 9, 2011
This review is from: Max and the Big Fat Lie: A Book About Telling the Truth (Building Christian Character) (Hardcover)
I have been reading Michael Waite books about building Christian character for years. This is my childrens absolute favorite! Max and the Big Fat Lie teaches children how one "little white lie" can turn into a gigantic lie! Max wants to watch a movie he knows is inappropriate, and his mother would never let him watch. He meets three devious characters along his journey to make up a lie that his mom will believe. Each character, Sir Fib, Clever Deceiver, and Big Fat Lie, each build upon the previous characters lie until the lie is so enormous and unbelievable Max can not take the guilt and shame of lying to his mother.

The illustrations and bright fun characters keeps my children attention, and they want me to read it over and over to them. Not many books focus on building good morals and character, but Michael Waite does a marvelous job doing just that! I highly recommend this book and the rest of the series to any parent, teacher, or babysitter who wants to focus on strengthening children's character.

The books in this series were requested by my daughter and her children like the stories and the content. It is hard to find books that teach values and these seem to be pretty good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Building Christian Character series Max and the Big Fat Lie, February 18, 2010

This review is from: Max and the Big Fat Lie: A Book About Telling the Truth (Building Christian Character) (Hardcover)
Each book of The Christian Character series encompasses a specific topic. Some of them are: Thankfulness, Obedience, Showing love, Forgiveness, Fairness, Helpfulness. This one focuses on jealousy and how to overcome it.

The books in this series are done in rhyme and have a smooth, easy flow to them that keep the child interested; as well as an abundance of cute, applicable illustrations that convey feeling and emotion. At the end of each story is an applicable Bible verse.

My 4 children all loved these books and we read them over and over. I think they really do teach a lesson in a way that the child can identify with. Each child has had all of these conflicts and emotions and can see him/herself in the situation. The books show wonderful conflict resolution.

I can't find this particular book in my collection so I have no excerpts from it. The book shows how one little fib can lead to one big lie to all kinds of problems. The bigger the lie got, the more it felt like a big green monster was breathing down Max's neck.If I find this book I will have more plot details as well as an excerpt.

Highy recommend for kids up to about age 8.
