This review is from: Max Burton 6010 8-Inch Induction Interface Disk with Heat-Proof Handle (Kitchen)
This interface disk worked great when boiling water in my NON-magnetic tea kettle... And it DOES let you use just about ANY pot or pan you own on an induction cooktop. BUT, for it's simple design and manufacturing, the price is DOUBLE what it should be !!!!!! Go ahead, bite the bullet.. what else can you do to be able to use your existing pots and pans ?? By the way, 4 cups of water boiled 30 seconds FASTER using this AND the Burton induction cooktop, than it did on my smooth glass cooktop on high ! I just HAD TO compare the two !!!!

This was purchased with an induction cooktop, It is well made and does what it is supposed to do. The money is better invested in induction compatabile cookware. We found dirt cheap cookware at TJMAX for less than the purchase price of this device. If you have a pot or pan you cannot live without then buy it. It's just another item you need to clean after cooking. The induction cookware heats so fast it makes cookware used with this seem like cooking in the dark ages.

This item does everything the manufacturer claims. All cookware can now be used on an induction cook-top, the tri-ply disk distributes the heat evenly, and the silicone handle is comfortable to hold, remaining cool in use.
I have an aluminum pressure canner, a non-stick hard-anodized sauce pan reserved for milk-based sauces and custards, a glass vacuum coffee pot, and several other items of cookware made of non-magnetic materials which are not induction compatible. Were it not for these items, I would not have bought this interface - which effectively reduces the controllability, instant response, and efficiency to below that of a radiant cook-top. Buy this item if you must retain cookware which is not induction compatible - it will work well with them. BUT... it makes absolutely no sense to hobble an induction cook-top's capabilities after paying its premium cost. AND... It is far more than twice the price I would expect to pay for this item when comparing it with the price of an economy set of tri-ply, induction compatible cookware (which can now be found for around $150). Sooner or later a competitor will challenge this manufacturer's monopoly and prices will fall. Until then it merits a very reluctant overall score of 4 stars. Were it not for my "special" items of cookware, this would warrant 2 stars.

Sent Induction Kenmore Stove into Fault Mode,

I was really looking forward to purchasing an induction disk so that i could continue to use my non-induction ready pans on my new Kenmore Elite slide in stove. First use, the stove's induction cooktop instantly recognized the disk's magnetic characteristics and kicked right in. A few seconds later the stove went into error mode and the stove completely shut down and would not respond while the disk remained on the burner. The error code would not clear while the disk was on the stove. Once I removed the disk and replaced it with a magnetic pan, the error code went away and the stove resumed to work like a charm. I repeated the process several times. Each time the disk sent the stove into a error mode. Previously and since, the stove works great with all other magnetic fry pans and pots. I don't know why I had a problem with this disk. Perhaps other stoves would not experience the same difficulties.

Defeats the purpose of induction,

This product basically converts an induction surface into a conventional electric burner. So why go to the trouble of having an induction appliance?
The only reason to have this product is if you ONLY have induction cooking surfaces and non-induction cookware that you can't part with. Using an interface disk you defeat the point of induction: 1) You lose the precise, rapid control that induction gives you over heat levels. 2) You waste lots of energy that is getting radiated out of the disk, like a conventional solid burner.

We bought this to use our awesome Max Burton induction burner with some aluminum pans.
Put it on the burner, put an aluminum fry pan on top, with eggs in the pan, turned on the induction burner, and we waited... Half a second later, there was a series of loud metallic pops. This kind of freaked us out, as you don't normally see that kind of behaviour in major appliances. Upon immediately turning it off, we examined everything and noted rather large blisters in the thin metal sheeting on this disk. It no longer sat flat, and very little of the disk would make contact with the burner any more. It lasted an incredible half of a second before breaking. We contacted the company from which we bought it on Amazon (don't remember who it was - so consider this review to be of the item, not the seller), and heard nothing back. Fifty bucks flushed down the toilet. NOT recommended.

Well, It did work as advertised, but it does seem a little high priced for what it is. I agree with other reviewers that it makes more sense to buy induction ready cookware. This item does effectively turn your induction burner into a standard electric burner. After all, if you can afford an induction cooktop, you can surely afford to buy some new pots and pans. The only reason I bought it was so that I could continue to use the expensive Williams-Sonoma fritatta pan my daughter had just given me for Christmas. One disturbing thing...When I used it the first time, I found some sort of dark brown residue burned onto the bottom of the disk AND onto my new induction cooktop. It took some heavy scouring to get that off the disk, and scraping with a razor blade to clean the cooktop. I suggest thoroughly scouring the disk BEFORE you use it to avoid this.

I Wanted it to Work,

Had high hopes for this item and was looking forward to being able to use all our pans with our induction cooktops. I have 4 pans that work with the induction cooktops and another 50 or so that don't, so I had about 50 good reasons to want this to work.
Unfortunately, however, the cooktops and this interface do not play nicely. After about a minute, the cooktop shuts down from overheat. I tried turning it back on, but you have to wait until it cools down, which also means the food has cooled down, defeating the purpose entirely. I also tried only using it for low heat cooking. No luck there either, eventually that too caused the dreaded overheating code error to appear. I pushed the edge of the return envelope, trying to find a way to make this thing useful, but as I was nearing the 30 day window, and I'd found no way to make this do anything other than look interesting on the pot rack, the interface disk had to be returned. Oh, well. Maybe someone will come up with something that works.

Over-heated burner on older induction cooktop,

I tested the interface disk, trying to boil a small amount of water in an aluminum steamer pot, on my 10- or 12-year-old GE induction cooktop. The induction burner overheated and shut down (beeping and flashing), while the water in the pot was still only tepid. Since the disk comes with no cautions about temperature settings, etc., I assume that the interface simply does not work as expected on my cooktop. Newer induction units may be less sensitive than my old one.

After purchasing a combination induction and regular cooktop (half the burners are induction, the others are conventional burners), we decided that we couldn't part with some of our inherited and beloved cookware. So we bought this to make sure we could use our pots, pans, etc on the induction burners. This works great for that!
However, if you plan to get all new cookware why on earth would you need this? But if you are used to your old cookware, have inherited pots or pans that have been in the family for ages and aren't ready to let go of them...this is an ideal solution. For us, of course, we have to be careful not to use those pots and pans WITHOUT this interface disk - a possible issue if our teens forget and put the cookware on the induction burner without using the interface. So I'm still a bit wary about possible mistakes. I keep our old cookware in harder to reach areas. Bottom line? This works. But just be sure of the reasons why you are buying it and whether it suits your needs. |
