I have been using the Max Burton for a month now. The old problems with induction have been solved. This generation works instantly. In case you do not know what I am reviewing, this is my choice for an induction unit, portable. So the surface is glass and it induces heat in metal. I can heat a pot ten times faster than electric coils. I have nearly the same control as with gas.

The features here are critical in a mid power unit like this one. You want as many grades of temperature as you can get, This one has ten. I am updating my review because Permutation has corrected me in pointing that you can get finer gradations of temperature.

It allows you to set temperature by degrees. Thank you. From a gentle 140 on up. Best in class starts at only 80.

I cook with clay on this burner because included is the interface disc. Unit heats disc, disc heats clay. As slowly as 140 degrees.

You can place this unit on any surface. It is light. If you want an extra burner, this one will outperform your own stove unless you have a 17,000+ BTU Viking like mine. And even if you do, it goes as far as your extension cord. Remember it heats the pan, not the unit, except after a whle the pot makes the surface a little hot.

I've wanted an induction cooktop for some time and this model fits the bill perfectly. It's easy to operate and cooks and/or warms foods without creating extra heat in the kitchen. I've cooked meats, vegetables and pastas to perfection. Being able to set temperature or time for cooking makes it easy to coordinate cooking of the different elements in a meal. I was especially pleased with the interface disk because some of my pots and pans are not magnetized. I was able to use my glass cookware to prepare vegetables and boil eggs. I don't regret this purchase.

This unit, with moderate use, lasted slightly less than 11 months. Within half a year it showed evidence of failing -- slower to heat, requiring much longer cooking times. Finally it just wouldn't light up (start indicator button) nor turn on, save for the fan which kicked in ever so faintly. I threw it out yesterday.

I liked the concept of a spare & portable cooktop and was intrigued with induction (better for the environment), but feel I made a mistake with my selection.

As to my cooking experience -- though the product description eludes to a large burner, and the induction disc seems to support that idea by being 8" in diameter -- the reality with my unit was that the heat source had only a 4" diameter. I found it impossible to keep my all-clad skillets from scorching at this hot spot. Reducing the heat only rendered the outer band of my skillets ineffective cooking surfaces.

I tested the time required to boil water by simultaneously heating on my range and on this unit, two identical kettles filled to the same level. (Obviously the same could be accomplished by clocking the one kettle twice and comparing the boil times.) At any rate, my electric range won hands down.

I still like the concept of having a spare cooktop and a portable one at that, but now I'll shop for something which would reasonably share the same 10-12 year lifespan of a typical range.

We have had this device for a couple of weeks and have used it several times. We live in a motor home and don't like to use the propane stove top because of open flames in tight quarters and also because the cover for the gas stove top is the largest part of the counter top. Anyway, we have had several cook tops over the years, none of which has come close to this device. The interface disk is really an important option unless you want to buy and carry special pots and pans. It heats water very quickly, and the interface disk has enabled me to saute and fry in lightweight non-stick pans. You do have to be sure the entire bottom surface contacts the interface disk or you will only get partial heating and hot spots. Other than that, the device is very satisfactory.

I have a small kitchen so I decided to tear out my gas range and use an induction cooktop when needed. I use it several times per week and love it but the interface disk does not work very well. I have to put my unit on 10 (450 degrees) which is the highest and it still does not convert enough heat to my non induction cookware to bring it to a boil. I wish I would have know this before so I could have spent the extra money on induction cookware instead. I went to Bed Bath and Beyond and bought a few pans which work AMAZINGLY! The heat is very even and your pan is at the desired temp within SECONDS! I really like this unit just not the interface disk so much, otherwise I would have given it 5 stars ;)
