Book Description

October 13, 2009 8 and up3 and upMax Disaster (Book 3)
Max grapples with the outrageousness of divorced parents beginning to date — and other mysteries of evolution — in his third quirky notebook.

Welcome to Max’s book of inventions, experiments, comic strips, and random thoughts about school, the universe, evolution, and parents who definitely don’t act the way parents are supposed to act. Luckily for Max, he has a place to jot down his biggest questions and most amazing discoveries. This zany mix of comics, concoctions, and contraptions helps Max tells the story of his topsy-turvy life and how he comes to terms with a changing family.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Writing and drawing pictures in his journal, Max records his unhappiness about his parents’ separation and his mother’s dating, his annoyance with his older brother, and the love he has for cartooning, inventing, and science. Readers who find large blocks of text intimidating will welcome the illustrated pages here, whether Max is writing down four steps to avoid his teacher’s notice, remembering what it’s like to come home and find his mother on the phone with her boyfriend, or illustrating his latest inventions, such as Girl B-Gone and Slob-in-a-Can. Each page is crowded with Max’s drawings, lines of text, and speech balloons, but the overall effect is colorful and engaging. His ongoing comic strip, featuring a weird little green hero called Alien Eraser, provides a quirky counterpoint to the main text. Sometimes sad, sometimes funny, the third volume in the Max Disaster series is very readable fare from the author-illustrator of the Amelia’s Notebook series. Grades 2-5. --Carolyn Phelan --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

More About the Author

Marissa Moss has been telling stories and drawing pictures to go with them for as long as she can remember. She sent her first book to publishers when she was nine, but it wasn't very good and it never got published. She didn't try again until she was a grown-up, but since then she hasn't stopped.

The idea for the first Amelia's Notebook came from the notebook Moss kept when she was a kid. Amelia is a lot like her and the things that happen to Amelia really happened to Marissa (mostly).

Along with Amelia, Moss has created many characters and is especially drawn to history. Historical books allows her to imagine what it's like to be alive in a different place at a completely different time. And then there are the Max Disaster books which allow her to play with scientific experiments, inventions, and comic strips.
