I was looking at all the other reviews for this book and none of them seem to agree with me. Max the Mighty is about a boy named Max.Who Max thinks that he's just a complete idiot and does not have any good qualities at all just because he looks different He meets this girl named Worm. She got the name Worm because the kids at school picked on her for reading too many books. Max helps Worm escape from her step-dad that beats on Worm and her mom. Max is wanted for kidnapping Worm because they go to find Worm's dad in Chivalry, Montana. Worm believes that her dad can help with the problems of Max being wanted and the problem with Worm's step dad beating her and her mom. While they go to Chivalry, Montana, they meet people like the Dippy Hippie who helps them get there.

I do recommend this book because it had a little comedy and a little action plus some serious parts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, November 6, 2003

This review is from: Max The Mighty (Paperback)
This book is a great story of the friendship between Max, a kid who is very large for his age and is not too bright, and Rachel, also called "worm" because of her huge interest in reading. The story begins at Max's house, where he lives with his grandma and grandpa, who he calls Gram and Grim. The first couple chapters walk you through a normal day in his life. First, walking to school, trying to avoid hoodlums who live on "the wrong side of the tracks. In his classes, being made fun of for being so big and not being so smart. And lastly, taking the bus, where kids simply annoy and annoy him, even though he could easily beat them up. Then the story turns around and shows you Rachel's horrible home life. Her mom is constantly beaten by her stepfather, a tall, lean man with a heart of stone. When Max realizes this problem, he rescues her and they set off on a long and adventurous journey across the country to find her real dad, who is thought to live in Chivalry, Montana. And this journey has plenty of surprises along the way.

I really liked this book because I felt like I could relate to what some of the characters were going through.

I would highly recommend this book to any child or adult looking for a great story of friendship and determination. Also could be a good book to read along with your child.

4.0 out of 5 stars Max the Mighty, February 26, 2001

This review is from: Max The Mighty (Paperback)
p "Max the Mighty" by Rodman Philbrick is a sequel to the book "Freak the Mighty". In this book Max, the main character, is still sulking over the loss of his friend when he finds a girl by the name of Racheal(nicknamed worm) who befriends him. This girl, he soon finds out, is in a lot of trouble with her step-dad. One time when Max tries to stop him from doing anything to her he carries her out of the house and they hide for a while. The step dad goes and tells the police that Max tried to hurt Racheal. Max sudenly finds himself traveling across America with this girl to meet her father who will supposibly know what to do. They go through a lot of adventures together and begin a very strong relationship as friends. This book was very good. It showed a lot about friendship. I don't know if it's as good as the first but i do recommend you read it.

The book Max the Mighty was an excellent book. There are awesome characters. There are some new characters like the Undertaker and a girl named Worm and some of the old characters from Freak the Mighty. The only thing missing in Max the Mighty : Freak.... I highly recommend this book to people who have read Freak the Mighty or someone who likes adventure. So read this book and feel the excitement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ryan's Max the Mighty Review, May 6, 2009
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Max The Mighty (Paperback)
Max the Mighty is an adventurous story by Rodman Philbrick. This book is about a girl named Rachel who has a mean stepfather that bosses Rachel and her mom around. The next main character is Max. Max is huge for his age. In this book, Max is kind of like the hero. You will figure out why he was a hero once you read the book. Rachel, also known as bookworm, loves to read. That's where the nickname Worm came from. Grim and Gram (Max's grandparents) are kind of like Max's parents. Back in Freak the Mighty, Max's mom was killed by his father Kenny Kane (Killer Kane) and he's in jail, so Grim and Gram are like his parents

Rachel, with the help of Max, an over-sized teen, tries to get everything straight. Max and Rachel are on an adventure to kick out the evil step-father and try to find her real father to help them with that. On the way they meet some strange but helpful people, like Dippy Hippie and Hobo Joe. Dippy Hippie, who is this psycho hippie, helped them in a lot of ways in their journey. He helped them by giving them a place to stay. Hobo Joe is a hobo that lives on a train who also helped them in a lot of ways. He showed Max and Rachel how to get to Chivalry, Montana. They also meet some criminals on the way. Then Rachel and Max found something surprising once they got to Chivalry.

If I would grade the book 1-10, I would give it a ten. I gave it a ten because I love adventurous and surprising books. I thought it was adventurous because Max and Rachel had to go on a train to Chivalry, Montana to find her father. I also like this book because it gives a lot of description of what Rodman Philbrick talks about. One of my favorite passages is when he said "That's when the glowing eyes find us. Eyes so bright it paints us with light. Eyes so bright it's like looking into the sun. This must be what dragon's eyes look like when they want to eat you up, or burn you to a crisp." I also liked it because it made me feel like their really was a dragon out there.

I would recommend this book to people who like adventure and surprises. I would also recommend this book to people that already read Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Was A Good Book, April 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Max The Mighty (Paperback)
I thought that this was a good book. I read the first sequal, Freak the Mighty with my language arts class and I decided I wanted to read the next book, Max the Mighty. I thought this book was worth reading and I enjoyed it. It is about a huge boy named Max and he meets a little girl named Worm and he takes her away from home because her step-father abuses her and her mom. They go on a lot of adventures with a man in a colorful hippy bus. They begin to be really good friends and Worm teaches Max a few things while on their adventures. I won't tell you the end of the book, so you will have to read it for yourself!

4.0 out of 5 stars Matt Review, April 30, 2009
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Max The Mighty (Paperback)
In this book, Max the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, there is lots of adventure. The main characters in this story are Max, Rachel, the Undertaker, and Dippy Hippy. If you like a lot of adventure and action you should read this book.

In the beginning, Max meets Rachel by saving her from a bully. Bookworm is Rachel's nickname and they call her that because she always reads books. Rachel has an abusive stepfather named the Undertaker that beats on her mom. Max and Rachel run away from him and go to Chivalry, Montana to find Rachel's real dad. After Max saves Worm (Rachel), Max and Worm become friends. Max and Worm are always side by side. Worm feels safe from the Undertaker when she is with Max.

I liked this book because it is very easy to understand and has lots of adventure. If you read this book you will sometimes feel sad, afraid, and happy. This book is partly about friendship and trusting your friend. Also it is about having two sides to one story because Rachel's mom told Max to take Rachel, but the police agreed with the Undertaker that she didn't. It's kind of like of like doing something illegal to save someone. That is what Max had to go through to save Rachel from the Undertaker.

I recommend this book to people who like adventure and a fast-moving story. This book is good because it is kind of hard to predict, so you can't tell what will happen next. If you are going to read this book, then I recommend you read Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick first.
