Customer Reviews

On the brightest setting, this lamp fill the whole room with enough light for both of us to be happy, without the overheads.
Eider
The pole sections only screw together at the top and bottom - the other two connections are just loose friction connections made by inserting the poles together.
Champ
The "70 watt" rating is for the fluorescent lamp(s) it contains, and is equivalent in lighting to about 300 watts of incandescent light.

This is a nice torchiere; sturdy, attractive and gives a lot of light with low wattage. 70 watts total from 3 bulbs. It has a 3 way switch to select the amount of light.

I bought this from Amazon and paid $43.29. I later picked up another one at Ace Hardware in Cambridge for $17.99!
Note in the assembly instructions, it implies that the clips in the light unit are to be tightened before the glass shade is installed.
I think this is incorrect. The only purpose for the clips is to hold the glass shade in place I would think. Also the bulbs are the twist fluorescent type which are easy to install but may be more difficult and expensive to obtain.

Unfortunately very cheaply made and flimsy. Not very stylish looking, either, because the bulbs show above the shade. (They are clearly visible to me at my height of 5 feet 6 inches.) Also has a fatal flaw for a tall, tippy floor lamp--a glass shade that does not fasten securely to the lamp in any way, but just sits held in place by its weight. Pass this one by.

This is a much better product than I expected. It may have been improved from earlier versions. (I received mine in May 2013). The build quality is fine, but keep reading for helpful tips.

There are no assembly instructions. Improper assembly might account for some negative reviews, but you can't blame the consumer if there are no instructions. It's not hard to figure out what to do, but then again, I'm an engineer. Even so, I missed a few things at first.

Some reviewers said that the components snap together and are not threaded. At this time, two of the connections are threaded, and two of the connections push together. Yet even these two sections are a bayonet fit -- push and rotate to lock them. I missed the "rotate to lock" feature the first time I assembled it. No instructions. The sections must be aligned in the correct orientation to push together properly. The reviewer who had to prop up his dangling post may not have done this.

The base, which is adequately heavy, screws on to the lowest section of the pole. The lamp fixture also screws on to the highest section of the pole. In between, there is a middle section that has the bayonet, push and twist fit to the top and bottom pole sections.

Some reviewers claim that the lamp is hard to move because the sections will come apart if you grasp the pole and lift. If you rotate and lock the sections, you can grasp the pole anywhere and lift it. Again, I missed this feature at first.

Some reviewers claimed that the light bulbs were visible above the top of the lamp. This aspect of the design may have been changed, because the bulbs do not now stand straight up and down, they tilt at a 45 degree angle.

We've used halogen torch lamps for many years. They are bright, but also very hot and must be cleaned and changed very carefully. {They also work quite effectively as bug zappers, but that's a different story. Occasionally an unlucky spider or moth takes a dive in there. A puff of smoke goes up, and an odor permeates the room for a while.}

Now, along comes the fluorescent torch lamp. We find it to be absolutely wonderful. Not only does it use only a small fraction of the energy to light up the room, but it is much cooler and safer. Cool down is very quick, and you can actually touch the bulbs without shortening their active life. No need to put on cotton gloves to change tubes.

This model uses a 3-way circuit with three separate bulbs (also available on Amazon). With all three turned on, it is actually too bright for our living room. We've been leaving it on the two-bulb setting, and it is every bit as satisfying as the old halogen monsters. That means we've got more light if we need it, or a spare bulb handy if one goes out.

Note that this model has the switch at the top, just under the shade. That mean's you have to get up to change the setting. A small drawback for most situations.

We were very wary of changing to fluorescent bulbs, but the price was attractive, and the numbers on brightness, bulb life and energy usage were further enticing. We are so glad we made the switch. It's one of the few good decisions we've made in a while.

I wanted to buy a light for my home office, surfed Amazon, and found this lamp, read the reviews and decided to purchase.

When the package was received it was double boxed and look securely packaged. I opened the lamp and proceeded to put it together. The lamp is cheap, very cheap on the quality side. Only the base and the top screw together, the other two pieces of the lamp pole "push" together. The problem with this is that if you want to pick up the lamp you need to grab it from the bottom and lift vs. what comes natural, "picking it up in the middle of the pole and lifting". Also, one of the three light bulbs was completely shattered. Finally, the lamp leans so much that I had to prop it into the corner to try and make it look straight.

The lamp is on right now in my office with two of the 3 bulbs working, leaning on the wall.

If you have any thoughts of buying this lamp, please do yourself a favor and pass.
