4.0 out of 5 stars Much larger than I thought it would be, but works great
I got this to go in a ceiling fan in my office that's on at least 12 hours a day. Although I never dim the lights, the fan has a dimmer that ramps up the lights when turning them on, so regular CFLs don't work in it. This one works perfectly.

I have read that dimmable CFLs make noise when actually dimmed, but since I don't dim it anyway, this works well...

2.0 out of 5 stars Hope was dimmed, but the bulb does not.
Based upon a couple of positive reviews for this bulb, I believed that CFL technology had advanced to create a working dimmable bulb. Unfortunately it was only my hopes which were dimmed.
Our usage: A new expensive floor lamp with a varaible voltage dimmer switch.

Based upon a couple of positive reviews for this bulb, I believed that CFL technology had advanced to create a working dimmable bulb. Unfortunately it was only my hopes which were dimmed.
Our usage: A new expensive floor lamp with a varaible voltage dimmer switch.

PROS
* This blub is bigger than a normal CFL, but not too big to fit into most normal applications.
* It is well built.
* The color is warm and bright!
* If you intend to use the bulb at full brightness 90% of the time, this is an excellent, bright bulb.
* The light it throws is nearly spherical (excellent for a lamp with a semi-transparent shade).

CONS
* Estimating that it dims to 20% of output is very optimistic. Using a photographic light meter we could only get it to about 50% before it would flicker and turn off.
* If left in a dimmed mode for a time (15+ minutes), it would not fully illuminate without being shut off for a few minutes. Any attempt to fully illuminate from a dimmed setting would cause the bulb to flicker and turn off.
* If kept illuminated at its absulte lowest setting, it would turn off after about 5 minutes.

I hope dimmable CFL technology will get better, but for right now halogen is for me.

Light does not dim as described. It flickers very brightly and then returns to full brightness. Also the bulb make a loud humming noise when in use. Amazon is great to buy from because the refunded my purchase.

I have read that dimmable CFLs make noise when actually dimmed, but since I don't dim it anyway, this works well. I've gone through at least 2 regular bulbs in the second socket since I put this one in.

If the price would drop to under $10, I'd replace every dimming bulb in my house, but at $16 a pop, I can only really recommend these for applications where the light is going to be on 8+ hours a day.

Also to note is that the picture makes it look pretty small, however the bulb is massive. If it were any bigger, it wouldn't have fit in my fan with the glass shield around it. I actually don't know if I'd be able to put the shield on if I had 2 of these in the fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Instant-on, bright and dimmable, January 20, 2011

This bulb is perfect for me. It provides pleasant and bright light immediately after I turn on the switch. It responds to my regular dimmer well (20%-100% range as are most dimmable CFLs). Small enough to replace 100W incandescent bulb, and it is truly as bright as 100W incandescent bulb. I am yet to see how long it lasts.
