A rock band with a better sound.,

I had never heard of Maxeen until I went to a concert and saw them perform. They blew me away from beginning to end and it only took that one show to convince me to buy the album at the merchandise booth. I spoke with the lead singer/bassist Tom about how their performance convinced me to buy their album and he was a friendly chum. After listening to the album carefully, I am in awe. This album is driving rock music at its best. The album is fast and fresh, reminding me a lot of 1980s bands like Loverboy, but better, if I dare say. If you enjoy good old punk music, check this band out and see them live!

It's an exciting time for music when a few bands are starting to break from the monotony created from a pop-centric radio dial. Rock is resurging with renewed interests in what made it rock in the first place. Remniscent of retro greats such as the Clash and Police, Maxeen's debut truly rocks! This trio draws you in with their hard-driving rhythms and melodic whimsy. "Please" opens with kicking drums and energy to burn. The album maintains this high energy from start to finish without exhausting the listener. What amazes me most is how beautiful their sound truly is without losing the feel of a rock album. Check out the swooning vocals on "Lead Not Follow" ( I get chills hearing it) and how skillfully it leads into "Soleil" to get an idea. I found myself moving to the rhythms and singing along after my very first listen. Twelve tracks and not one disappoints. Fittingly, the final track is titled "Good Enough". For a freshman attempt in a fickle industry, I'd say they're far better than most and the best I've heard in a long time.

They're probably sick of the comparison by now, but Maxeen evokes early Police. It's their own fault, they're a 3-piece with a lead singer/bassist. The bottom line? Great songs well played. Tom's vocals are unique - slightly off-putting at first, they've got a nasal timbre and almost a bit of a whine - but his desperate, passionate performances and pure vocal horsepower overcome the flaws and make a fan out of you after two songs. His "beautifully defective voice" resides somewhere in the category with Geddy Lee and Elvis Costello.
