2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't do the job
I purchased this particular disk cleaner based on the reviews I read. It cost a little more but I know Maxell to be a good brand. The directions are not clear enough for me - they assume you already understand how the thing works. Then, I couldn't get it to work. It was supposed to go in and then start talking. Of the 4 slots I tried it in it only worked in
one AND...

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Well as Far as I Can Tell, October 1, 2009

This is one of those products where you can never be completely sure if it is doing anything. But I just finished using it for the 40th time, after which it is recommended that you buy a new one, and all the players/burners I've used it on seem to be in fine working order. Whether they would be working as well if I didn't periodically clean them is impossible to say.

The disc has several small brushes on it that clean the equipment's lens. It takes about one minute. There are also some additional features which I have never used.

I was extremely pleased with how well this cleaned my CD player lens. A CD was stopping and skipping and generally making a nuisance of itself. I used the cleaner. The CD now plays perfectly; I guess I can stop looking for a new bookshelf system. One tip: This thing is a little strange. It has 7 tracks. Track 1 does the cleaning. As it works, you can hear music playing. When it's done, you get a message that you can go on to tracks 2 through 7 for some speaker/wiring tests and some Maxell jingles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Talks to you and saved me a new CD player purchase, September 5, 2010

I was having a lot of problems with my CD player skipping, refusing to play certain CDs, and randomly changing CDs. I thought I would have to replace it, which I didn't want to because it's a high-end one, and I just love the sound quality. In the process of shopping for a new player, I came across information on CD lens cleaners. People were saying that they saved their CD player. Well, it's true! Don't believe internet information that tells you that eventually the lasers give out! My 12 year-old CD player just had a dirty lens, it wasn't broken.

This one has little brushes on the underside that clean off your laser lens. Some reviews indicated that this was the only one they tried that the CD player accepted, so that was the reason I picked this one.

You put the CD in the player, in my case a 5 CD changer, and hit play. It then plays a little music and talks to you! When it's done cleaning your CD player lens it tells you and lets you continue for a sound system check - basically makes sure your speakers are hooked to the right channels. I was glad to hear that mine were indeed hooked up correctly.

Tonight I put in a CD that had previously skipped or gotten stuck on a part of a song. Will wonders never cease...it played perfectly!

Couldn't ask for a better product. Saved me a ton of money on a new, high end (I was going to choose a Yamaha) player.

5.0 out of 5 stars Restoring SACD player's performance, February 14, 2011

I almost took my top-of-the-line Sony SACD player--a $3,000 investment--in for repairs: it no longer recognized some SACDs as such, refusing to play them in any but the 16-bit PCM format. It didn't even "recognize" a few traditional CDs and wouldn';t play them.
When telling a friend that I'd probably spend a minmum of $100 "bench fee" + whatever the (highly-regarded audio dealer's) repair facility would charge for the repair, he suggested that the problem might be a dirty lens, espically when I told him how long I'd owned the player.
I bought the Maxell 6-brush lens cleaner, followed the instructions and my player performed as it used to when brand-new--or so I thought. It still didn't recognize 1 or 2 discs. Maybe ONE swipe wasn't enough, I reasoned; so I tried it once again.
This time: sound perfection.
Perhaps it was just my imagination, but some discs appeared to sound even better than I'd once thought. [Aural memory can be a tricky thing at best.]
Whatever the sonic truth, I'm a very satisfied customer.

5.0 out of 5 stars It did what I hoped it would do, December 7, 2010

I recently bought a music cd and wanted to transfer it to Itunes (and ultimately to my ipod) but when I inserted the cd into the cd/dvd drive of my 3 year old mac it would spit it back out. I tried many times but it just wouldn't accept it. That reminded me that over the last few months I had to insert some other cds multiple times before they stayed inside. I didn't think anything of it at the time but the latest problem led me to conclude that there was something wrong with the cd drive. I decided to try the low cost possible fix and ordered this cleaner. I received it today and after a couple tries the mac accepted it and it did its thing. After the cleaning was complete I tried the cd that I had the problem with and it went in and stayed in on the first try. So, this product apparently did what I was hoping it would do and I am quite relieved that I hopefully won't have to have the mac cd/dvd drive fixed (it went out of warranty last month).

Have two DVD players. One was definitely very dirty around the laser. Used the product as directed and the problem was corrected. Very happy.
