These are the worst sounding headphones I've ever owned.
Case
The insides come apart from their wooden housing and then the delicate wires inside break.

I'm not really picky about quality, either build, sound, or whatnot.

I recently lost my Creative EP-630 earbuds, which are relatively cheap and sound fantastic, especially for the cost. Looking to find a suitable replacement, I settled on these in-ear buds, which tout the "warm" audio of wood (mahogany in this case, though Maxell makes several different wood styles) and come with the standard three sizes of silicone tips.

My first listen to these buds brought shock and dismay. The audio was muddy, and only changing the EQ setting my iPod would bring them to anywhere near normal. Even then the mids and highs weren't nearly as front and center as I liked, and while most budget ear buds tend to even out over time, these didn't ever get to a place I was comfortable with.

Speaking of comfort, the fit is terrible. I have been using in-ear buds for years, and while they're not the most comfortable thing on the planet, when done right they stay in, create a soft seal, and only after several consecutive hours do they become mildly uncomfortable. It takes 30-45 minutes for these to become untolerably uncomfortable, and the the pain was enough that I had headache for a few hours after. Beyond this, the soft seal never feels completely in place, and the exterior noise reduction is not very good.

I understand that $20 ear buds are not going to blow you away, and you can only expect so much for the investment. That being said, these ear buds fell well short of even my lowest expectations, and I cannot recommend them for anyone. Unless, of course, you prefer muddy audio and ear pain.

...and save up for a better pair of buds!

I have experienced two defective pairs in a row. The one I purchased here and the replacement I was sent by Maxell. Both pairs have the same manufacturing flaw: the wooden backs are not glued securely to the plastic driver section. After wearing them a couple of times, one side fell apart.

The sound isn't great either-- mids are way too hot. I had to EQ my IPOD just to make them sound halfway decent.

There are better buds out there! Maxell really needs to rethink this one...

They come with several rubber tips to help fit. Tips are difficult to get on/off. Nice nylon braiding over wires, but it doesn't help with movement induced noise, which of course is terrible with all in-ear type buds. Nice bass, not muddy. What treble there is sounds distant, like those instruments are farther away from the rest of the band. Very weird. Still, they're better than regular earbuds.

I have owned 2 pairs of these headphones and while I love the deep rich sound; the build quality is crap. The nylon cords nice, but after a while they get frazzled and start to knot up. The worst thing however is the wood unseating from the speaker and ear piece. It is real shame, because the sound quality is quite good in my opinion. They probably will not appeal to those seeking super base; no, more to the refined ear that likes classical and jazz. If you want base, I recommend the Phillips surround sound headphones at about $25.00. Those too have build quality issues, but I think Phillips has the best speakers on the market for ear-buds or in ear headphones.

I made the mistake of purchasing these off the shelf at a local Office Depot for the low low price of ten bucks. I had just returned from a flight, and realized I'd left my old pair of earbuds on the plane, so stopped in to buy a new set. I'm not really picky about quality, either build, sound, or whatnot. My last pair of ear buds, a set of Skull Candy cheapos, cost the same amount and were purchased from my local Fred Meyer, aka a grocery store. I buy cheap ear buds because I have a habit of losing them and like I said, not too picky about quality, just want to jam out to my tunes on my laptop/etc.... but these things are just *terrible*.

I bought them because they were the only pair on the shelf that had braided cabling. Well, they will completely destroy your music when you actually listen to them. Do not buy.

Don't believe me? Go ahead, buy them, take them home and try them, then go back to the store to return them because you will hate what they do to your music. They somehow managed to roll off *all* high frequencies above say... 500k (or that's what it sounds like to my ears). Muddy isn't even the word for it, because at least muddy has *some* character. This sounds like you've put a pair of crappy speakers in a cardboard box with some foam and are listening by pressing your ear up against the outside of the box.

Oh... and the damned cord is really really short. At least 1 foot shorter than my last pair which were also a bit shorter than I'd have liked.

TERRIBLE!

Can't comment on the other reviewer's statements that they fall apart quickly, because I've only had them for about 30 minutes and I'm headed back to the store to return them as soon as I finish typing this review.

My wife picked up a set of the Maxell Timbers when I mentioned that having wooden earbuds might just be a nifty little addition to my earbud collection. The packaging states that the Timbers have a warm, rich sound, and they do in fact, as the sound leans far more to the bass side of the music than the highs and mids. I enjoy many different types of music, so it's pretty easy to listen to my collection over a couple of hours and preview them with different types.

Classical Crossover - these headphones gave my Josh Groban and Katherine Jenkins music a much warmer sound than I was accustomed to. Mr. Groban actually sounded like he had a deeper voice via the Maxell Timbers earbuds.

Pop - Katy Perry selections were also a bit deeper and rich in sound. I began to notice that the more bass in a song, the more the bass buzzed.

Country - George Strait (Check Yes or No) was incredibly deeper than expected. It wasn't a bad deep, just different as the bass was very pronounced

The one song I really didn't like with these headphones was OK Go's "This Too Shall Pass", and I'm not sure that's the fault of these earbuds. I had never realized that the back beat buzzed so much. I tried a few other pairs of earbuds and realized that I probably had only played this song from my speakers and never the earbuds.

I would give the Maxell Earbuds a 4 out of 5 which is based on what you get versus the price you'll pay. They do a great job of producing a warm and rich sound for earbuds that are under $20. You can definitely purchase far better earbuds, but for under $20,these are probably some of the best.
