2.0 out of 5 stars Inadequate cooking temperatures, June 24, 2010

This review is from: Maxi-Matic EWK-606 Elite Gourmet 5-Quart Cast Nonstick Electric Wok with Glass Lid, Black (Kitchen)
Short and simple -- this electric wok does NOT attain its stated cooking temperature range. I bought this product specifically to deep fry small portions of food, only needing around 360-375F. Gee, the product labelling says this wok heats to 450F. Wrong! The plug-in temperature selector is actually labelled as 440F. Hmm, close enough, but why the difference? First time I try to heat the oil for my frying, I wait thru a few cycles, allowing the plug to think it has obtained its highest temperature for certain. In goes my accurate thermometer. Hmm, again. The highest temperature my oil ever obtained was 397F. Throw in the slightest amount of food with the 1 quart of oil I was heating, and watch that temperature drop drop drop. The element had to stay on constantly to even attempt to maintain any semblance of high temperatures, and my cooking times were ridiculously longer than reasonable. I'm headed back to the propane fire unit -- this wok just has an inadequate and inaccurate heater element.
