5.0 out of 5 stars Great kitchen for girls and boys!
I'm so glad I took a chance and bought this kitchen for my 2-year-old son. The details on the kitchen are great, the construction is sturdy thus far and it's provided hours of imaginative play. The assembly time was reasonable (I'd read reviews of similar kitchens where people said it took 3-4 hours to assemble) as it took me and my husband less than 2 hours to complete...

3.0 out of 5 stars Just an OK toy
I bought this toy from Amazon after reading some great reviews. The price was right and the size was perfect for the small daycare home I run. The kids were so excited when it came. Then we tried to put it together!! NOTHING fit right! The pre-drilled holes were drilled on the wrong side, the screws didn't fit right, the doors didn't align correctly & the cute little...

The assembly time was reasonable (I'd read reviews of similar kitchens where people said it took 3-4 hours to assemble) as it took me and my husband less than 2 hours to complete. We reinforced the pot rack bar and sink faucet with screws since these two items wobble and aren't held in place by anything. Very nice solid wood kitchen at a good price!

I bought this toy from Amazon after reading some great reviews. The price was right and the size was perfect for the small daycare home I run. The kids were so excited when it came. Then we tried to put it together!! NOTHING fit right! The pre-drilled holes were drilled on the wrong side, the screws didn't fit right, the doors didn't align correctly & the cute little bar to hang your dish towl... yeah forget that!! We would have returned it but we had 5 little children waiting so patiently to play with it. We managed to drill our own holes, finagel this and that, and make it work. We didn't get to use the bar, but the kids don't seem to care. It has provided hours and hours of fun and they don't notice the little imperfections. I hope this was just a fluke, and whoever buys this toys gets it with everything intact!! Good Luck!!

I purchased this set for my 18 month old toddler. I like that it is wooden, and that it has such a small footprint - we don't have a lot of space for large toys. My son plays with it constantly, opening and closing the doors, turning the knobs, and ripping out the faucet. Yes, he can remove it easily. It is one of two parts that need to be screwed on by the purchaser as the plastic dowel that holds it on is not up to the job. The other part is the horizontal bar above the sink, as other reviewers have mentioned. Another part that needs attention is the top corner of the oven door. It is a very sharp corner and could benefit from a good sanding to take the edge off.
Assembly is aided by a drill - it took me about two hours, but my toddler was "helping" me, so probably 1-1.5 hours if you can get some time to yourself. Good product for the price.
Also, there is one small difference from the product photo - the oven door handle is vertical, not horizontal and has hinges along the right side - it does not open like a real oven door. You could cause it to if you have the time and inclination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Successor model also great, February 25, 2010

I bought the successor model to this one for Christmas for my 2 year old daughter at Tar_get dotcom for less than eighty dollars (forty in shipping, natch). Our model is dark blue and the configuration is a bit different: it has real doors instead of the curtain, a back panel, and a nice set of plastic utensils and pans. It took my very handy husband about 3 hours to put it together, but he said the directions were very clear and it was straightforward to assemble. It even included extra nails, screws, etc. We had no problems with mis-drilled holes, etc. as mentioned in another review.

We are both really pleased with the quality of this wooden kitchen. It's sturdy, has a small footprint without sacrificing any necessary kitchen components, and it looks fantastic. No gaudy plastic or gender-specific colors for this kitchen. Two toddlers can play at it without an excess of shoving. We haven't had any concerns about tipping, though our girl is well past the pulling-up-on-things stage. You might want to anchor it into the wall if you're worried.

Most importantly, my daughter LOVES this set. She probably plays with it for two hours a day, and that's been for two months now. It's been fun to see her pretend play grow to encompass cooking, chopping, washing, and occasionally drilling and hammering, with this kitchen.

Absolutely money well spent.

I have been looking for a sturdy wooden play kitchen for months. My requirements were pretty simple: wood, non-psychedelic colors, sturdy. This kitchen is great. The only downfall of the kitchen is the faucet attachment. It easily pops off which my son loves to do over and over and over again. Thankfully he has figured out how to reattach it himself so its slightly less annoying. The Melissa and Doug red pot set fit really well in the microwave and oven. Its a great product for the price.

All he wanted for Christmas was a kitchen. He brought Santa a picture cut from a magazine, to make sure that Santa knew what he wanted. He never wavered even a little bit, all December-long, which is saying a lot for a three year old. So we got this kitchen for my son. It is well constructed, very solid and a good size. Not too big, but large enough that he can actually play with it. It did take a couple hours to assemble, but that's worth it to know that we have a solid piece that our children can play with for years. The only thing is that the picture shows some pots hanging from the pot rack, but there isn't anything on the pot rack to hang pot from (we bought pots and toy food separately). But there's enough storage space under the oven and sink to keep all the accessories there.

I was very dissatisfied with this product. The directions were very minimal, but the biggest disappointment was that it was cut incorrectly. Everything EXCEPT the left side did fit together; but the left side had been cut incorrectly. (like the template was turned around backwards) because the slot in the back was in the front, the holes didn't match up and would NOT go together even if I tried some clever carpentry. We boxed it back up and returned it. Amazon was really nice about making that process easy. We ended up buying another different one at the Target store and it was much better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice kitchen, but not all as pictured, December 18, 2010

I really hate it when I buy something and it is not exactly as pictured on the product page, so I wanted to let potential buyers know that there are a couple things different than the picture: first, the oven does not open/close at the top, it opens from the left, and second, there are no utensils included that hang from the rod, as in the picture. It's a nice-looking piece, seems sturdy, and I'm hoping my son loves it.

This is a compact kitchen with great features perfect for small spaces (or to not overwhelm a room) but still big enough for my taller than his age 2 1/2 year old. I think he'll comfortably fit its proportions until he's 5 years old. And he loves it. I'm so glad he and we are happy with it after all I went through to assemble it. First thing to know -- I'm very good at assembly. But this took me 3 hours!!! The instructions are ridiculous, they're just tiny illustrations, no text and nothing described in steps, you just have to figure it out. On top of it, like others here ours had mismatched holes and misaligned things. Like the slot to fit the backing into the lower cabinet wasn't aligned, so the backing sticks up a quarter inch higher than it should. I was still able to get the countertop on okay without it being too crooked. But in the meantime wasted time taking everything apart and doing them over again in hopes I could get the slot for the backing aligned better. Which didn't work. Also the pieces for the oven door are not aligned well and though it went on and it's functional it's slightly crooked and the magnets on the cabinet and door which keep the oven door fastened close so it's not flying open all the time, are out of line by a quarter inch. I'm going to have to find some magnets to glue on there. A child can be injured with the cabinet door always hanging open. In my experience assembling things all my life it's very very rare to get assemble-yourself furniture even the cheapest stuff with holes and parts not aligned. This factory in China doesn't have much quality control going on, or the product designers gave them the wrong specifications. DO NOT buy this kitchen if you are not good at assembly and understanding small, detailed diagrams.

Assembly tips:
* There's no way on earth to tell in the instructions which of the two stained wood dowels is which. Here's what I learned, only by error: The longer dowel is the one that goes in the towel holder on the side and the shorter one is for the curtain on the front shelves.
* It's also very difficult to tell which screws are which on the instructions so open up the bag, count, separate and ID them first before you do anything.
* Put the hinges on the microwave and oven doors first THEN attach the hinge/door to the unit. Nothing is explained in steps in the instructions so I thought it would be helpful to mention that.
