Worthwhile and perhaps more,
This review is from: Maximizing the Arthritis Cure: A Step-By-Step Program to Faster, Stronger Healing During Any Stage of the Cure (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the requisite "book biz" follow-up to their earlier book, The Arthritis Cure: The Medical Miracle that Can Heal, Reverse, and May Even Cure Osteoarthritis (1997), which I'll also report on here, treating both books as one. My initial reaction was, this is either a public service or a hustle. Written by three different laureled academics and obviously put together by committee, the earlier book was a big time best seller and occasioned this sequel. Most of the diet advice was like something I had read twenty years ago. The exercise program ditto. The use of glucosamine and chondroitin was the real difference. In fact, the purpose of the book could be seen as legitimizing the use of these supplements in the treatment of osteoarthritis. People bought the book in the hope that it would help them with their pain. They also bought the book so that they would be motivated to try glucosamine and chondroitin. Many people understandably would not try the supplements without the seal of approval provided by an authoritative book like this. The question is-and it is the big question-is their program any good, or is it just another feel good pep talk fronting for another bogus approach? I was a little uncertain since the book jacket was red, white and blue, and we all know the quote about patriotism being "the last refuge of a scoundrel." So I tried glucosamine and chondroitin and stayed fairly close to their overall program. Two years have passed and although I cannot say for certain, it is my belief that the supplements are valuable. At any rate, my arthritic knee is much improved. In the follow-up book, the authors give information on other treatments. I have to say that I think they've done a positive service in writing these two books. The information about healing in general and about prevention and about the positive effects of exercise and attitude are worthwhile. The authors may have made megabucks (or maybe they didn't), but I don't feel they ripped anybody off, on the contrary. I am happy to be positive even though I still think "cure" is probably too strong a word for what their program can do, although I only have my own experience to go on. Their reports of the double blind tests that have been conducted are good, but a long way from convincing proof that glucosamine and chrondoitin and exercises can cure osteoarthritis.

I had given up hope and was preparing for a knee replacement,

If I had this information 5 years ago it may have prevented my first knee replacement at 44 years old. I was preparing to have my other knee done as well when I started taking your prescribed dosage of glucosamine and chondroitin along with excercise and special arch supports and now I am doing well. I can't believe how much of a difference this has made in my life and I wonder how many other people are not being told about the benefits of these dietary supplements.

I was involved in a motorcycle accident several years back, which had left me with severe arthritis. After reading Dr. Theo's book, my doctor and I decided to try to implement the program of nutrition and exercise, as well as the use of Chondroitin and Glucosamine, as outlined in "Maximizing the Arthritis Cure." All I can say is THANK YOU DR. THEO! The book was well written, clear and concise. Dr. Theo has a great ability to turn medical jargon into easily understood layman's terms. He provides many useful insights as well as answers to the questions I've been asking all along. I have seen many doctors, most of whom prescribed pain-killers and anti-inflammatory drugs. I was tired of getting the runaround and tired of hearing "You'll just have to live with it". Dr. Theo shows us a better way. If you or anyone you know has arthritis, you must read this book!

Thank you for another remarkable book!,

I'm not sure which book I enjoyed more; The Arthritis Cure or it's follow-up, Maximizing the Arthritis Cure. Either way, Dr. Theodosakis has done it again with an inspirational and helpful book. As a nurse, I recommended his latest book to my father who suffers from osteoarthritis in his knees. He has experienced exceptional relief from taking the glucosamine and chondroitin and following the other steps of the plan. He has been able to almost stop taking ibuprofen other than when he has a bad flare up. Now he is able to garden more comfortably and with better biomechanics and he is walking the dog on a regular basis again---the dog is grateful to the good doctor as well! I'm glad that more people in the medical community are coming around to recognize the power of these supplements.

Young and old will benefit.,
This review is from: Maximizing the Arthritis Cure: A Step-By-Step Program to Faster, Stronger Healing During Any Stage of the Cure (Mass Market Paperback)
My elderly aunt has been plagued with arthritis for years and hasn'talways been willing to try alternative treatments. As her pain progressed we convinced her to try the glucosamine and condroitan blends. She is seeing substantial improvements! Our daughter is taking it as a way to heal her back injuries due to an accident. She no longer needs those heavy duty pain killers. Buy both of Theodosakis' books and see for yourself....Treat arthritis naturally and see how much better you feel without those pain killers that make your mind fuzzy.

I was involved in a motorcycle accident several years back, which had left me with severe arthritis in several joints. After reading Dr. Theo's book, my doctor and I decided to try to implement his program of nutrition and excercise, as well as the use of Chondroitin and Glucosamine taken in supplement form. All I can say is THANK YOU DR. THEO! The book was well written, clear and concise. Dr. Theo has a great ability to turn medical jargon into easily understood terms. He provides useful insights, many of which seem specific to my condition. I have seen many doctors, most of whom prescribe pain-killers and anti-inflammatory drugs only. Dr. Theo shows us a better way. If you or anyone you know, has arthritis, you must read this book!

Good overview for the public but lacking in detail,

How much can these guys capitalize on the same information? Holistic health people in the know have been recommending proper nutrition (including glycosaminoglycan and EFA supplementation), proper exercise, posture, and movement mechanics, whole body purification regimens involving herbs and fasting (not included in this book), and other regimens for years before they were written in this book. However, the medical orthodoxy has largely ignored this or even labelled it quackery. As an example, I have a publication from the Arthritis Foundation published in the late 1970s that states any attempt to treat arthritis with dietary modification is quackery. Boulderdash! It's interesting that a medical doctor can finally come out with a book saying some of what many others have been saying for years and only now does the public listen. What has the American public been listening to that they could ignore the valuable information that has been out there for so long? Since my area of professional expertise involves biomechanics, posture and movement education, and exercise, I was particularly disappointed with the quality of these sections. They obviously weren't written by some one with comprehensive and sophisticated theoretical, clinical, AND practical knowledge and skills in this area (these chapters looked like something a graduate student in exercise physiology would crank out for a low grade master's thesis). The exercises were lacking in detail and precision, many more important exercises and exercise concepts were totally neglected, important qualitative aspects of proper biomechanics were almost totally ignored, drawings were poor and often depicted non-optimal technique, etc., etc. The information lead me to believe that none of the authors has a high level, in-depth clinical understanding of working with patients with these kinds of disorders on a day-in, day-out basis. Otherwise, they would realize that the people who need a biomechanically oriented program the most would be the least likely to carry it out effectively given the information in this book. Just one small example - flexibility is stressed as the cornerstone of good biomechanics. Let me propose a question - are the best athletes, dancers, etc. in the world the most flexibility or those with the best neuromuscular control? What about the patient with constitutional or local hypermobility who is too flexible? I rest my case. I took particular umbrage with the statements regarding a physical therapist on pg. 39 including the quote "... you will have little need for a physical therapist ...". The fact remains that almost 100% of the population, when performing an exercise or movement for the first time by attempting to imitate what they see in a picture, will perform it improperly. I could go on and on but the net result is that I was disappointed with the quality of this book. I would have hoped for better.

I enjoyed reading your book it was very informatiive with excellent suggestions for well being. I have one problem I hope you can help me with. Because of years of taking medications for R.A. my stomach is very sensitive to many medications such as asprin etc. I find I am unable to take chondroiten & glucosamine without stomach distress. Unfortunatley, these two supplements are a major part of the arthritis cure. I would appreciate any sugges tions.

Dissatisfied,

This review is from: Maximizing the Arthritis Cure: A Step-By-Step Program to Faster, Stronger Healing During Any Stage of the Cure (Mass Market Paperback)
I received my "used - good" order - "Maximizing the Arthritis Cure" today. I would NOT say it is in "good" condition. Bottom right corner looks like a dog chewed it up, pages are highlighted, and there is personal information handwritten on the back page, that probably someone doesn't want there. Definitely not worth the money!! If it had listed as "used - fair", I would not have been surprised at the condition, except for the personal injfo on the back page.
