talk about torture!,

This review is from: Maximo Ghosts To Glory (Video Game)
Maximo is quite a game. In many aspects it is quite good, with its great graphics and vast environments. But one thing just stands out and must be mentioned: one must possess some serious, SERIOUS masochistic tendencies in order to venture into this gaming world. I mean, come on, I enjoy a good challenge as much as the next guy, but the difficulty in this game is almost ridiculous, practically to the point of being painful. There are 5 main worlds, which are broken up into about 5000 square miles of area you must check out, as you try and do battle with 35 monsters at the same time, just hoping to avoid those 3 hits it takes for you to croak, and hoping you'll get a single measly life potion so you can survive a few more steps til' you get attacked by 45 other beasts. Plus, if you do make it in one piece to one of the 3 or 4 save points in the entire game (and kudos to you if you do), you're so wasted by then it's practically pointless cause' the next time you load the game, all you can pretty much do is take one step and die. So, basically, graphics wise, it's pretty cool. But the experience itself can be torture. The only reason i give Maximo 3 stars is cause' it's so freakin' hard that there is that feeling of "HELL YEAAAHH!!!", when you actually get to finish any part of your quest.... which most likely occurs when your armor is long gone and you're down to your boxers.

So great, and so hard,

This game is one of the best for the PS2. It is by far the best action/adventure games I have played in a long time. It combines the old-school feel of Ghosts 'N' Goblins and plays out in a 3D world. You get powerups by spending coins you get from dead enemies. The only problem is that the game is very difficult, and by the time you get to save, you might have only one life left, that means that unless you know how to play perfectly, you'll die over and over in the same area. Otherwise it is great.

Look before you leap. Please, for your own benefit.,
This review is from: Maximo Ghosts To Glory (Video Game)
OK, First off, this game is WAAAYYY over hyped. I have played much more fun Atari games than this one. Granted, Maximo has great graphics, and is the sequel to the beloved Ghosts and Goblins, (or was it Ghouls and Ghosts), anyway those are the ONLY things going for it.The first thing you will think when you first pop in Maximo is "Wow, this game is beautiful." and it will spiral down from there. First problem, the Camera: In a platform game, the one of the most dire things to have successfully tweaked is the camera. It should be your best friend and help/guide/do-what-I-want-you-to-do type thing, but in Maximo, the camera is your worst enemy. You will find yourself straight from the beginning in situtations where you must jump across lava and the camera seems to be of no help AT ALL, as Maximo can hardly jump an inche anyway, it even seems to be against you, making the game HARDER than it already is... Second problem, the Difficulty: The enemies in Maximo are some of the most cheapest enemies I have ever fought. They tend to always be out of range of Maximo's midget sword and gang up on you when you are in no postion to fight. And there is a bird that steals your money that you DESPERATELY need ALL THE TIME, and the bird sometimes seems to come out of nowhere and sometimes from behind, and Maximo's midget sword ends up being no use as he, again, can't hardly jump and sword cannot reach the bird flying away. This game definitely needs a difficulty setting, because, obviously it doesn't... (but wait, theres more) Third problem, in General: Another problem in Maximo is that in order to save, you need 100 coins, which is a daunting task granted that you have the ... bird I discussed earlier stealing your money all the time. Plus, you need the money to buy yourself armor which could be an arm and a leg at times because you will find yourself in a situation that you will need armor, but you just beat a level that was extremly difficult and need to really save, leaving you very frustrated. This problem seems to come up alot after boss fights because you have to choose one or the other. The boss may left you weak, but you want to save, or you have enough energy but will you make it through the next stage alive. You also need special coins called death coins to continue after game overs. Now this wouldn't be a problem, but you find death coins rarely or too far and between. On top of that, if you after you use a couple of continues, the Grim Reaper will begin to charge 2 death coins instead of 1. There are more problems in here but I would probably go over the 1000 word limit. Take it from one of the most hardcore gamers, Maximo is [bad]. It started off as a great idea and showed lots of promise but was poorly executed and missed by a long shot, a very long shot. The difficulty could have been better as it should be challenging, not unfair as this game will appeal to younger gamers who wont get past the first level. The camera is a gigantic problem and disappointment and Maximo should be better equipped and agile. If your looking for a good platformer, Jak and Daxter is an excellent choice and wont disappoint. But still, Maximo is still worth a rental, and a purchase if it was only [a few dollars] but dont say I didn't warn you.

A great game,
This review is from: Maximo Ghosts To Glory (Video Game)
First of all, if you're playing stuff like MGS2 and GTA3 and just tossed your NES and SNES now then this game sure as hell isn't for you!Maximo is like an Action/Adventure game we don't get anymore. So what if the game is just hack and slash! From all the previews I read of this game that is what I expected. So what if they're too may enemies, no one complained about that in the Contra series or any other game like this. The game presents a great challenge in a light I haven't seen since the good ol days of my NES. But even if the game is a good challenge, its nothin to complain or get excited about. Once you realize how easy it is to battle enemies you'll feel strange knowing you ever lost to them in the first place. But the other disappointment with the difficulty is that bosses are a bit easy (but to be truthful what game actually has a tough boss nowadays on the PS2?) I was not in any way disappointed with this game, and after reading all the bad reviews that people gave it I almost didn't get it. But then when I heard it was an old fashioned Action/Adventure game you can't resist. Don't listen to all these bad reviews (they're mostly just complaining anyway). The gameplay is fun and interesting but some of it can get really annoying sometimes like when you die and then when the game over toll keeps increasing making it harder to continue. The game is great and exciting for an Action/Adventure gamer. The game was good in the aspect of graphics and sound. The music is so good and gets you into the game. The Voice acting is top notch. While the story is the basic "Save the princess and restore peace to the land" stores I had no problem with it this time (as IF, HOW MANY OLD CLASSIC GAMES HAD THAT!!! Mario also comes to mind.) The game is funner and presents a good challenge but its more about skill then difficulty. The game doesn't even get hard until the fourth world! OVERALL +A great game for the old school gamer and action/adventurer Negative

Classically Fun!,

I stumbled onto this game at blockbuster and came here to Amazon to pre-order. (Capcom made a deal with Blockbuster and released the game to them a month before the stores get it so their customers could rent before they chose to buy -- great policy as I am a quick buyer.) It is so much fun to play, a little wandering, a little collecting, a little fighting. We laugh as we get from level to level either because his moves are so cool or because the ghosts, zombies or skeletons have just stole our clothes! Great for my boyfriend to play together passing the controller back and forth between us . . . can't wait to play it with his kids! The graphics are great and really capitalize on the platform. Load times are quick. You are always learning additional moves and finding new gear such as a gold suit or armour or flaming sword. Basically, an interesting, classic game filled with eye-candy and fun! Warning . . . can be addicting :)

I, despite what the others said think this game is a classic for PS2. It really irritates me when people complain about the camera angles when all they have to do is press L1 to change it to a better angle. The game is just a fun game to play for older or younger gamers. Saving your game can be a little irritating, especially when you have to leave, and you can't just save, but I enjoy the challenge. If you like adventure games, get it.

Great Game!,

I love this game, not only is it fun to play it's a challenge. It has all the feel of the old 2D adventure games of the past including the horky music and sounds, but with the power of PS2. Game play is easy to control, survival is not. This is good, too many games of today are way too easy and boring. Maximo is humorous as well, battle hundreds of undead collecting a gold coin from each, save your cash and just on the brink of death when you need armor the most ...gamble you money on a "surprise" and end up buying yourself a custom pair of boxershorts sporting a "M" monogram, instead of the armor you wanted. Now your ready to die in style.Although I end up playing most of this game with Maximo in boxershorts and teetering on the edge of death, this is a game I was happy to spend money on. The world of Maximo is huge and takes full advantage of the PS2 power. Great Game!

Capcom digs up glorious ghosts in MAXIMO,

In the modern reincarnation of its classic side-scoller "Ghosts and Goblins", Capcom unearths fantastic gameplay in "Maximo: Ghosts and Glory". This game lives up to the hype. Fascinating graphics and sound effects immerse the player in an entertaining and challenging game environment. If you're a fan of Crash Bandicoot or other games in the 3D-3rd-person genre, check out this game! Capcom regains its title as the undisputed king of console-gaming fun.

This review is from: Maximo Ghosts To Glory (Video Game)
Ghosts to Glory was the first video game I bought. It was difficult to play since I was new to video gaming. I died many times along the way and had to start over. But, once I learned how to play this game and build up my money, life points, etc., it was super fun. I noticed from the reviews that many players got frustrated and gave the game a low score. I say don't give up and it will get better and better. Many praises to the developers!

Next Gen Game with Old School Challenge,
By Bee (Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Maximo Ghosts To Glory (Video Game)
First off let me say that I have been a fan of the Ghosts and Goblins series for a long while, so I may be a bit more biased than some. Maximo is the 4th installment in Capcom's Ghosts and Goblins series which began on the original NES as a 2-D side scrolling action game. Maximo is the first in the series to go to a 3-D environment and it is done very well. The environment is very well detailed, to ripples in the water, to plants moving from the wind when you jump near them, a lot of attention was given to the detail. The story is fairly simple and straight forward. The classic save the princess from the evil dude (Archiles). Maximo's kingdom has been taken over by his former advisor and friend, and Archiles also took Maximo's girl and married her. Since taking Maximo's kingdom Archiles seems to have become power crazy. He uses a drill type scepter and pulls spirits from the underworld to use as his undead army. If you have never played any of the other games in this series you will not be lost. Your goal is fairly easy to see, and the gameplay is something that you can jump right into. It seems to hearken back to gameplay of old, mixed with Next Gen. graphics and a fantastic 3-D world. The game is by no means easy. While not as hard as the original Ghosts and Goblins, it still offers even the most seasoned veteran a good challenge. And for even more challenge each level has a "mastery" percentage. Meaning it gives you a percentage of how much you have found in that particular level, so even if you got through a level there may still be more to find. According to the manual there is a bonus at the end of the game if you have mastered all the levels, which would be a tough task, but one that would be entertaining. The music is the music from the old games, just updated and revamped a little which was a good thing to me because I like hearing the music from my youth again. But even if you do not know what that music is, it's still enjoyable music that does not detract from the gameplay at all. I personally think the music is very fitting and good. I would only not recommend this game to very young children. While the game is not scary, it could be a bit frightening to young children because of monsters in the game. But for anyone probably 12 and over I would say that there would be no problems. But even though this game has a teen rating, it still is a lot of fun for us who haven't been teenagers in quite some time. If you are an adventure game fan, who likes the next gen graphics, with an old time game feel then I think you would really enjoy Maximo. It kind of reminds me of Pitfall 3-D for the PSX, it has close to that type of feel. With the jumping over pits, slashing at monsters waiting for you, or popping up from underneath you. Collecting coins, trying not to get hit. It's a very fun game and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I don't think too many people will be disappointed in this game if they give it a chance. |
