Game Informer Review

Like going to a high school reunion without the nagging self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy, Capcom's Maximo Vs. Army of Zin reintroduces you to old friends while at the same time making the situation current. Fond memories of old hack n' slash titles make gamers smile with recollections of long combo strings, the satisfaction of annihilating unending scores of enemies, and limited save points. This sequel brings out these same feelings in gamers of today, while updating the controls and general feel to current standards.

Mixed in with all these great highlights of the old-school action genre are the old-school ways of managing the difficulty level – limiting save points and the number of available continues. Some players will surely find this frustrating, as you'll be required to execute platforming and action exercises with nearly surgical precision if you want to make it to the end. But, to those who will gripe, I think that Zin isn't intended to be played all the way through in one chunk – do a few levels, maybe you'll get frustrated, but you'll surely come back to it later. The game is very linear and the rewards are big enough that you'll feel satisfied after completing a level well.

There were more than a few times that I chucked the controller with disgust and thought, "I hate Maximo. I hate his dumb lack of continues and I'm sick of this level." Then, I'd go away and come back to it a few hours later. Finishing the level that I had cursed at before, I thought, "I love Maximo. Maximo is great and I want to play it all of the time!" I remember that this is exactly how I felt playing some of my favorite games in the early days of home console gaming. I hate, then I love, then I hate, and I love again.

Zin certainly does take all of the good parts of gaming's past, but how does it compare in other fields to current titles? It's certainly not a graphical powerhouse. The texture maps are pretty low resolution, but the environments generally make up for it with nicely vertical level design and lots of depth. The character designs are a perfect meld of kooky creativity and enemy types that fit in with the landscapes.

Some of the expected trappings of a current title are missing (co-op play for one), but ideas like purchasing lessons to learn new skills are present. The boxers made famous in the first title are back, but are more interesting because the undergarment you choose has an effect on your attributes.

Zin is a solid return to the golden days, but there's a reason that games changed. Fans of frequent save points will be frustrated, but devotees of the old hack n' slash will be satisfied tenfold.

Concept:
Bring the old-school mantra of frequent, combo-laden combat with few distractions to the current generation

Graphics:
A step behind others of its ilk, but still features nice character designs and animations

Sound:
Eh. It's not bad, but it certainly isn't noteworthy either

Playability:
Great difficulty ramp-up and nice combos make the whole trip a pleasure

Entertainment:
Like days of gaming yore, Zin is satisfying and challenging at the same time

Replay:
Moderately High

2nd Opinion:
Maximo is the kind of game mom used to make, assuming that your mother is a middle-aged Japanese man who worked on NES action games. I, for one, am glad that Capcom decided to make another iteration of the franchise. It's a simple principle: great hack n' slash action, gripping platforming, tons of power-ups and hidden goodies, and uniquely humorous deformed character designs. This game executes these concepts brilliantly, forcing you to conquer each level through lightning reflexes and perfect play, sending you back to the beginning of the world if you fail – just like in the old days before infinite continues. I like the new items and character-building features, which lets you keep more attributes from stage to stage, and hands out slightly more continues. Still, I wish as much progress had been made on the visual side of things, as Maximo Vs. Army of Zin looks painfully behind the times.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very ignored and underrated Ps2 game, December 29, 2004
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Maximo vs Army of Zin (Video Game)
Maximo Vs The Army of Zin is a great action packed Platformer by the great minds of Capcom. This game is very underrated and sadly it is ignored by many PS2 fans and owners(just look at the amount of reviews this game has on here). This is infact the sequal to Maximo: Ghost to Glory. Now the question is that is this game better then Maximo 1? YES. Maximo Vs Army of Zin is one those rare games when it does better then its predesssor. The game features more action packed gameplay and is just as challenging as the 1st. This time around you are able to save during game. It's still cheap though cause after you save you'll still have all the items and stuff but not the current level you were on.

As I have said before it is a shame this game is being so ignored. It's not even getting any commercials or advertisting when it first hit stores. Heck when this game first came out most gamestores I went to didn't have it but luckily Target had some copies. It's a real shame. Capcom deserves more respect for this game. Maybe it's because it's being ignored by such games like Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe and the Resident Evil series.

The game has a pretty neat story and it's even more cool when you get more powerups and new weapons as you advance in the game. There is a catch of course...some of the better moves you get will take some of your power gauge from you Super Meter away. The Super Meter lets you do all the cool specials and cool combos you do. It's not a hassle though cause you'll gain more power if you fight enough. The game is great in action but the lengh is pretty average you could beat it in less then 16 hours if you just try to beat it in story instead of collecting money to buy new items but it will be hard as heck if you do that. Lets get to it...

Good
-Great visuals
-very underrated Game
-lots of fast pace action
-some cool yet easy puzzles to solve
-20 great levels of pure enjoyment and entertainment
-A story..Well atleast a Story for me that I highly enjoyed...It's rare that I wanna beat a game just to see the Main character get the girl...and this is one of those games.
-Way better then the 1st Maximo

Bad
-A very ignored Ps2 game
-For some people the Puzzles can be really easy
-Some really frustraiting gameplay
-Needs a tad bit more levels
-I find it cheap that you can Save but not on the the current checkpoint..

Overall this is a great game, classic Maximo gameplay that is just as good if not BETTER then the original Maximo. Great Visuals, I really enjoyed the story and even though overall it's not a very long game it's still a great game and that is why I am giving it..

4.0 out of 5 stars Maximo part Deaux is equally enterntaining!, May 1, 2004
This review is from: Maximo vs Army of Zin (Video Game)
Like its predicessor, Army of Zin is one of the most difficult and frustrating games you'll ever love. There were times when I found myself literally screaming at the screen because I wanted to throw my controller through it and hit the monsters on the other side. Capcom really tries (and succeeds) to put the odds against Maximo the majority of the time. There are a few scenes when I wondered how I was able to make it out alive.

This time out, Maximo gets to learn new moves from old fighters he meets in battle, and can buy items from some of the street vendors he saves from evil. As difficult as the game is, and it is, Maximo "From Ghosts to Glory" was even more difficult and more frustrating.

Graphic and sound quality are above average, but certainly not in the league of some of the greats. But they don't need to be, the game play is outstanding. Conceptually, Maximo blends the best of old school gaming, with new school graphics.

A VERY worthwhile purchase, you'll definitely get your money's worth wih this title.

Great job Capcom!

Nephews and I had Maximo "Ghost to Glory", but was lost. We enjoyed the challenging levels, bosses and very nice touch to the graphics, so I checked Amazon and found the first Maximo and happily discovered the Second in the series- Maximo vs. "Army of Zin" I was thrilled to see it for sale by one Amazon vendor and purchased it as well. As in the first game, "Army of Zin" is packed with fun graphics and continues the tale of the lead character's challenge now along with Grim with more weapons and cool power-ups battle an army of Ghouls to save the villagers!
