Book Description

May 18, 2009
Your dog must be larger than a toaster. Tip well. Never use the word "blossom." Outperform the GPS. Know how to chug a beer (and know that you shouldn't). Always hold the door. Never use emoticons.

These are The Maxims of Manhood. They cover every aspect of life: women, sports, sex, the office, family, entertainment, fashion, fitness, and more women. Some of these you'd expect. Some you wouldn't, as they usher in amodern code of masculinity (Your favorite book may not be The Da Vinci Code). In a series of 100 essays, the rules are analyzed, explained, vigorously defended and openly mocked. Every rule has an authorized exception. Except the ones that don't.

This book might not be for you. It's only intended for people who fall into one of these seven buckets: 1) you are a man; 2) you will become a man; 3) you were once a man; 4) you are related to a man; 5) you are dating or have married a man; 6) you think that in the future, perhaps, you will date or marry a man; 7) you know, or think that at some point you will know?whether casually or formally?a man.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Awarded "Best of 2009, Arts/Culture" in January Magazine. It's more than just about being a real man, it's about being a real good, decent human... Funny. -- David Middleton, January Magazine

I love this book! It's hysterical. And women can relate-- it's a brutally honest depiction of men. -- Whitney Casey, Relationship Expert, TV Personality, author of The Man Plan

Wilser has succeeded in redefining how we see ourselves, in a very humorous, self-deprecating way. There are points in the book that are laugh-out-loud funny. You will find passages in here that will make you want to call your friends and say, `Hey, I just read about you in a book,' and share it with them. -- Neil S. Velleman, TMRZoo

Jeff Wilser rescues the subjugated with simple language and easy-to-read verbal flourish. His maxims are explicable and entertaining, creating the ultimate manual for men who feel they've lost their place in this kinder, gentler cosmos. -- Jordan Richardson, BlogCritics

I think I've found literary gold... This is the most I have ever laughed while reading a book. Seriously... Comedic genius... From the first line of text to the last word, I caught myself analyzing, laughing at, and enjoying the fact that I am a male... This book has got it all. -- MJay, NowICanBuyBeer.com

He's met many men.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, fun, surprising read, November 10, 2009
This review is from: The Maxims of Manhood: 100 Rules Every Real Man Must Live By (Paperback)
I'm a woman, and a writer, so I get skeptical when I see books about "what it is to be a man." However:

I picked up Maxims and found it to be not only funny and well-written, but also edgy, intelligent and honest. Wilser offers the right combination of tongue-in-cheek fun and well-placed bawdiness, so that every once in a while, a hunk of solid, good advice cuts through the humor. Oddly enough, the book has also given me a disarming, affectionate understanding for all the lost dudes I know who are trying to grow up. It's an entertaining, compelling read, and I think it's ruined me for other man books.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK, August 27, 2010
This review is from: The Maxims of Manhood: 100 Rules Every Real Man Must Live By (Paperback)
When I was reading this in the bookstore I was laughing so loud I had to apologize to the people around me. Great book! I'm shocked that a reveiwer criticized this book based on unsound advice for manhood. The author stated from the get go that it was not his intention to write a book about "being a man" and he further said that the no man should be buying a book about being a man. If you felt this book was a waste of time than that's your fault for not heeding his warning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Man Should Read This Book, June 8, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Maxims of Manhood: 100 Rules Every Real Man Must Live By (Paperback)
This book is hysterical.

Its a lighthearted gag on life as a male. At times its sincere and respectful, discussing chivalry and manners in the modern day, and at other times, its hilarious, going through the manners for a one-night stand.

I started read and didn't put it down till I finished the book.
