Legendary Trip-Hop Album Gets A Good But Not Great Deluxe Treatment,
By Rich Latta (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Maxinquaye (Audio CD)
Tricky - Maxinquaye (original album released in 1995)
MAXINQUAYE is legendary and one of my top all-time favs. Extremely innovative, dark and sexy. In fact, with a little selective programing, I consider it to be a "go-to" album for a night of intimate sensuality. Most people reading this no doubt know how great it is, so I'll focus on the bonus disk in this set. This is a five-star album in a great package with great sound including a good but less-than-stellar collection of remixes. Worthwhile for hard-core fans, but the more casual listener probably won't need to bother with it. I can't imagine that very many people will want to put the bonus disk on and listen to it front to back. In particular, hearing three versions of "Black Steel" can get rather tiresome in one sitting. Most of these mixes sound like a mish-mash of experimentation, demos and discarded ideas, but there is some worthwhile stuff here nevertheless. 1) "She Devil (Rough Monitor Mix)" - is really a version of "Suffocated Love". I don't appreciate being lead to believe it would be a new song by the title. It's quite similar to the album version, a little bit more skeletal with some additional vocal loops and turntable scratches. Inferior to the album version. *** 2) "Ponderosa (Dobie's Rub Part 1)" - A drum track replaces the marimba sound and some of the music itself is different. It's got a breezy feel, some guitar, vocal effects and other interesting sonic touches. Tricky's vocals are randomly interspersed. This is a very good remix. ****1/2 3) "Slick 66 (Commercial 12" Remix)" - a version of Slick Rick's "Children's Story" which also appears in a different version on Tricky's NEARLY GOD album. Features a decent slow jungle beat as Tricky recites the story. Quasi-hip-hop. It's cool, but not really very impressive. *** 4) "Overcome (Bungle Mix)" - a great song, disassembled and jumbled up. It's only 2 1/2 minutes long, but it has several disjointed segments and it's much more frenetic than the album version. When Martina sings, "When we funk we'll hear beats", the song abruptly shifts into an intense, breathy rhythm segment. (note - "funk" appears in the CD booklet but it actually sounds like another word I can't repeat here) ***3/4 5) "Brand New Your Retro (Alex Reece Remix)" - Another rather bare bones remix, this track is dominated by a bad-ass bass and drum kit - a little ironic since most remixes tend to pile on the effects. The minimal approach here is quite effective. **** 6) "Black Steel (Been Caught Steeling Remix)" - This version's overlayed with lots of nasty electric guitars. Powerful! ****1/2 7) "Aftermath (Version 1)" - As one might guess from the title, it just sounds like an early version of "Aftermath" before it blossomed into the great song it is. It's interspersed with lots of beat-less space. Doesn't really add much or offer any kind of reinterpretation but it's definitely interesting and worth hearing. **** 8) "Just For The Hate Of It (Rough Monitor Mix)" - Tricky takes on the vocals and uses the words from "Abbaon Fat Tracks", one of MAXINQUAYE's best songs. Otherwise, this track sounds nothing like "Abbaon". Clanging drums and cymbals feature prominently as Martina chimes in here and there along with some tinkling piano and spacey effects. It's a bit jarring and scattershot which will no doubt appeal to some. I myself appreciate disconcerting music and while Tricky is a master of this approach, this mix is only moderately successful...but it's definitely something off the beaten path. ***3/4 9) "Overcome (Acapella - Rough Monitor Mix)" - Track 10 comes much closer to a capella which leads me to suspect that the track titles have been mislabeled. Here we have another mish-mash of styles that can turn on a dime. Tricky is certainly tricky in that regard. After a minute or so, a propulsive beat with a droning bass settles in along with a looped single-note vocal, sort of an operatic sigh. Martina's "Karmacoma" vocals are great and the song is cool, but ultimately it just sounds like Tricky fooling around in the studio. ***1/2 10) "Black Steel (Rough Monitor Mix)" - is pretty much just Martina once again singing NWA's "Black Steel" accompanied by little more than echo-y effects. And then a single snare hit starts up, occasionally missing the beat. To be perfectly honest, this track sounds really lame. *1/2 11) "Overcome (2009 Remix)" - This version is quite subdued with atmospheric synths, drones and a beat made from marching boots. After all this time I was hoping for a much better remix of this song or at least a fresher approach. *** 12) "Hell Is Round The Corner (2009 Remix)" - A dreamier take on "Hell" with some treated piano, strings and some swimming sonic touches, Martina hovering in the background. At one point softly corrosive synths are layered on and the whole thing slowly builds with intensity. The original bass line is conspicuously absent. Doesn't quite measure up to the album version, but credit Tricky for offering an interesting, very good reinterpretation on this one. ****1/2 13) "Black Steel (2009 Remix)" - excellent dub-reggae version! Not really innovative but very well done and way cool. *****

The regular version of this albumn was once in my cd collection but got lost at some point. I got the Dexluxe version to replace the missing cd as I thought why not. This version is well worth having! Maybe it as meant to be. More doses of an already wonderful audio fix!
