I first got one of these Maxit Headgators around 1992! Last year I ordered two more, one for myself, another for my girlfriend. It's cheap, simple, versatile, lasts forever, and works well. My original one is still in great shape, despite being used about 300 times and going through the washer/dryer about 50 times. How many items do you own from the early 90's that still work extremely well? I use it for skiing (always), cycling (below 50 F), and hiking on cold windy days. I ski about 40 days/year in the Rocky mountains, I've tried many other neck warmers but none work as well.

windproof neck warmers -- seems like a good idea, but unless you're climbing mountains in Alaska these are overkill. Feel stiff and make it hard to breath.
fleece neckwarmers -- feel great in the store, but in the real world they freeze solid and make your face colder.
Maxit - blocks just the right amount of wind. If the front gets covered with snow/ice, just rotate it halfway around and you now have a nice soft warm part against your face. Fits under ski and bike helmets, even if they are tight. It's thin enough that when it's over my mouth and nose I can still breath normally.

Maxit makes tremendous quality products. Long before under armour they supplied the NFL with all of their cold weather gear. Not sure if they still do. In any case I now live in Austin but when I was doing graduate work on the East Coast this was by far my most useful and essential piece of winter wear.

It is a tube of polypropelene material that Maxit uses for almost all of their products with some lycra thrown in I believe. You can wear it as a neck warmer but it is stretchy enough to then pull up over your head for a complete head warmer. It is so stretchy that it can also be pulled up under your chin for a balaclava. You can also wear it as a thick headband.

I was at an REI and I saw a similar product with 'rabbit fur'. That one was way bulkier and less stretchy. Maxit's material is highly breathable yet also blocks wind right away. PERFECT for winter activties as you heat up and sweat the sweat is going to be wisked away. If you live in a part of the country that has a winter buy this. If you are an outdoor athelete in a wintery part of the country buy this right now. You will thank me. It is one of my favorite products of all time.

I purchased this neck gaiter at Paragon Sports about 9 years ago, and it became an instant favorite piece of clothing for weather below 45 degrees. Whether for skiing, running, or just walking around the city, I would not leave the house without it.

I purchased an additional one, and then over the next five years lost one, and stretched out the other beyond practical use.

Since then, I have been looking for replacements, in every sporting good store imaginable. All these years later, and I have finally found the replacement here on Amazon. Incredible.

This gaiter is superior because the material is the perfect thickness for the most versatile use situations. Perfect for running and skiing. Not too tight, not too loose. Material thickness is perfect, keeping a thin feeling but offering substantial wind and cold protection.

Length of this gaiter is superior, because you can pull it up to your eyes, and there is still plenty of material at the bottom of your neck, so all areas are covered.

My previous ones underwent very intense use over many winters and held up great. I'm sure I will get many winters out of this one.

If you have looked in stores for this type of neck gaiter and know how few options there are, and that the options that exist are mostly lame: too thick material, too short, too tight, etc etc are out there, jump on this one, it's simply the best...

Soft, stretchy, warm, medium weight fabric.

Keeps the neck, throat, ears, and lower face warm. Combine with any style hat or hooded jacket to give full coverage from winter chill. Much better than a scarf, stays in place. Good addition to cashmere dress jackets that don't have good collars. Makes the day feel 10 degrees warmer. Keep it in your jacket pocket for when things suddenly turn chilly, when it will be as welcome as a mug of hot chocolate.

I was first issued one of these in the Army during a cold weather field exercise. In sleeting cold weather with mud all over me, doing combat engineer drills, I could always count on this to keep my face warm. I've used it as a hand warmer, elbow pad, sock, sand/dust mask (OIF1,) pillow, sleep mask, and the list goes on and on and on. One year I lost mine and I couldn't remember who made it, it was horrible. I spent the whole winter trying to figure out where the heck we got them! I actually buy several now because I have a nasty habit of losing things. Fast forward a decade and I can't even imagine not having one of these.

If you don't have a small head and you're trying to do the balaclava you'll probably need to compensate for neck protection. I normally just use it to cover my nose and ears. My cold weather gear set is not complete without this product!
