5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent "Core" Kit January 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
My original reason for purchasing the Maxpedition FR-1 Pouch was to use it as a medical kit. Unfortunately, I could never get it configured to hold everything that I needed so consequently I do not use it as a first aid kit. Instead, I use it for what I call a "Core Component" of a modular system that I have created. The core component holds all the survival items that I would need in an emergency and will function as a stand alone kit. If all I was able to grab was my Maxpedition FR-1 Pouch in an emergency situation I would be good to go.

The main compartment is 7" x 5" x 3" with full zipper opening. It comes with a sturdy carry handle and is equipped with D-rings for shoulder strap (optional accessory) that I strongly recommend. It has modular webbing on the front, sides and back for attaching items using 5" TacTie which is another optional accessory. The FR-1 is tough and durable as all Maxpedition products.

On the OUTSIDE of my FR-1 I have the following gear attached: Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) , Streamlight KeyMate LED flashlight, Maxpedition carabiner with a max load of 600 pounds and 17 zip ties.

The INSIDE contains the following gear:

- Gerber Tempo AAA flashlight
- JetScream whistle
- 3 extra AAA batteries
- Small roll of duct tape
- 1 P-38 can opener
- 25 oz. Playpus foldable water container
- Emergency poncho
- Emergency space blanket
- 2 heavy duty garbage bags
- Tweezers
- Medicated Chap Stick
- 22 Advil
- 2 Tylenol
- 6 Immodium A-D
- 4 Bayer Aspirin
- 1 Zyrtec
- 6 Tums Quick Pak
- 4 Burn Stuff cream
- 10 Micropur MP-1 Water purifier tablets
- 3 Alcohol preps
- 2 Purell Deep Cleaning Hand Sanitizer wipes
- 12 feet Paracord
- Frontier Emergency Water Filter
- 1 Yellow Glow Stick
- 3 Kelty Nobendium tent stakes
- 1oz. bottle of hand sanitizer
- 1 Sharpie
- 1 Bic lighter
- 1 Swiss Army Knife
- 1 Swedish Fire Steel
- 3 Quick Tinder
- 1 WetFire Tinder
- Assortment of Band-Aids
- Mole Skin
- Petroleum Gauze Pad
- 1 5x9 SurgiPad
- 5 Butterfly Stitches

With this kit I can have drinkable water, fire, shelter, light, a knife and basic first aid supplies. While the FR-1 did not work out as a complete medical kit for me it does work very well as a "core component" of my modular carry system and will function as a stand alone kit if necessary.

I recommend Maxpeditions FR-1 Pouch and with a little ingenuity there are a lot of configurations that you can develop. If you are using this as a stand alone system I recommend purchasing the optional shoulder strap.

5.0 out of 5 stars FR-1 Pouch Review November 15, 2008
I have owned this for three months now and this is truly a great small pack with lots of storage space. I use this in my day pack as a survival/first aid kit would not leave home without it. Well built and designed with the outdoors person in mind, would not change a thing.AAAAA+

Excellent product as only Maxpedition can do. Preppers should have at least 1 of these.I saw several reviews of this pouch on line and that's what convinced me to purchase it.
