I needed something compact and tough for carrying small items around. Maxpedition is known for their durable products, and I decided to give their Fatty Organizer a try. It certainly fit the bill, and was compact and well-designed to boot.

When you open the pouch, you have a choice of strapping in your items either horizontally or vertically. What I mean by this is that the left side of the pouch has straps laid out in a vertical alignment, and the right side has a horizontal alignment. I thought this was a brilliant, simple design feature that adds another layer of versaility to a rock solid pack.

After stuffing it full, I can see why many swear by this thing. The seams, zippers and handles are tough, and can really take a beating. For those looking to EDC, I think this would be a great choice. It fits foldable knives, small flashlights, Leatherman multi-tools and writing instruments with ease. I was able to also fit a small notepad inside, as well as miscellany like chapstick, Visine, nail clipper and some Sharpies. An internal zippered pouch allows you to slide in a few other things (preferably flat items like wetnaps, paper clips, binder clips) that you can then zipper off and keep separate from the rest of your stuff. There are also "hook points" on the left side large enough to clip on a small carabiner for loose keychain items.

All in all, the Maxpedition Medium Fatty Pocket Organizer was a great pack for daily essentials and I would encourage anyone to give this one a shot.

My maxped. mini edc was packed, could not get anymore into it. The mini is 4 x 6 x .75, the fatty is 5 x 7 x 2. It still fits nicely into the console in the car. I actually have to get more stuff to utilize the extra space. Now I can use the mini to throw into my bag or brief case when traveling / flying. Like all maxped. products, it's zombie proof.

For years I carried my EDC items in a 1$ pouch. It worked, but it was like having a tool bag full of loose tools.
The Fatty allows me to compartmentalize and organize my tools.
IMO the best feature are the elastic straps, vertical on the left side, and horizontal on the right side. Due to the dimensions of the pouch, pen sized items fit perfectly on the left, and palm sized items fit on the right (multi tools, etc.).

This is the third Maxpedition product I bought. I reached a point where I was totally sick of throwing away cheaper bags for blown zippers and torn fabric. Yes, light weight is important for some applications, but value and durability are primary now. And actually, $20 for a pouch that lasts literally a lifetime is not expensive, it is cheap.

Now I am considering how to create a REALLY pared down EDC kit for my jacket or pants; when even the Micro EDC is too big. I'm thinking the Cocoon is the right form factor.

Anyway, the Fatty is highly recommended, here is a table of pouch volumes which might help some of you decide which Max to get:

All dimensions in inches and are approx:(the Cocoon is actually a tube shape) The formatting will not survive, but the last number is the volume..

length width height volume
Mini 4 6 0.75 18
micro 3.5 5.5 1 19
EDC 5 6 0.75 23
cocoon 8 2 1.5 24
Anemone 4.5 3.5 2.5 39
Fatty 7 5 2 70
B242B 7 5 2 70
242K 7 5 2 70
s.cuboid7.5 4.5 2.5 84

This is a very good pouch, and I generally can't say enough about the ruggedness of Maxpedition gear, but the Fatty seems to slightly exceed the limitations inherent in the clamshell design.

The Fatty is absolutely well crafted. The material is bulletproof, so to speak. The zippers and elastic bands are high quality, and I expect them to last a long time. This offering is also bigger than its EDC and Mini cousins from the same line, and you can fit a lot into it (see customer image).

The main problem that I find with the Fatty is that more will fit into it than can be comfortably secured. As a result, you either end up with a big awkward bulge in the center with empty space around the edges, or you pack every crevice of the thing and stuff is just kind of thrown in there haphazardly. In either case, the zippers tend to stick a bit going around the corners. Beyond that, this case is really too big to comfortably carry in a the external pockets of anything I own, and so it usually ends up inside whatever pack I'm carrying. Personally, I find it to be less convenient than the regular EDC or mini, both of which come together tightly and neatly when everything is secured and fit into a lot more places.

The basic utility of the Fatty is beyond question. I think it would be great for a glove box emergency kit. For day-to-day use, at least in my case, I would take two Mini's over one Fatty any day.
